I built a native Mac app for my PDF tool because keeping files local and using macOS frameworks mattered more than reaching the widest possible audience. That choice fit this product, but it also brought real costs: a narrower platform, more involved distribution, and the need to market the app actively. If reach had been the main goal, I would have chosen a web app.
Why native made sense for this PDF tool
A web app seemed like the obvious starting point. I changed direction because the product’s priorities aligned with capabilities I could use directly on macOS: sensitive documents staying on the user’s machine, access to platform frameworks, and an interface that remained responsive while processing large PDFs.

The implementation uses Apple Vision Framework for OCR, PDFKit for rendering, Core Image for filters, and FSEvents for file watching. Rust handles heavier processing. These are the author’s implementation choices, not a claim that a web app could never provide comparable features.

What the privacy rationale does—and doesn’t—establish
The author’s privacy goal was to keep sensitive files local. The essay puts the rationale this way: “A native app with no network calls is the only architecture where ‘your files never leave your machine’ is actually true.” That is the author’s assertion about the architecture chosen for this tool; it is not proof that all native apps are private or that browser-based tools necessarily send files elsewhere. The relevant question for any product is what it actually does with a user’s documents and whether network calls are made.
What I would reconsider: audience and reach
A Mac-only app excludes people using Windows and Linux. The essay points to Tauri as a cross-platform option, but notes that the macOS-specific APIs used by this PDF tool would not carry over unchanged. Supporting more systems would therefore require reconsidering the implementation, not simply assuming the same app would work everywhere.

- BUILT FOR COLLEGE. AND BEYOND — MacBook Air with the M5 chip packs blazing speed and powerful AI capabilities into an incredibly portable design. And with up to 18 hours of battery life,* this thin and light powerhouse is ready to take on almost any major, just about anywhere.
- TEAR THROUGH TOUGH ASSIGNMENTS — With its faster CPU and unified memory, the M5 chip delivers even more performance and fluidity across apps, making multitasking and creative workflows smooth and responsive. A powerful Neural Engine and next-generation GPU with Neural Accelerators give you a powerful platform for AI.
- MAKE QUICK WORK OF YOUR TO-DO LIST — Apple Intelligence helps you write, express yourself, and get things done effortlessly — whether it’s for school or everyday life. With groundbreaking privacy protections, it gives you peace of mind that no one else can access your data — not even Apple.*
- UP TO 18 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Air delivers incredible battery life with amazing performance, so you can power through a full day of classes without worrying about plugging in.
- A BRILLIANT 13.6-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Air supports 1 billion colors, making photos and videos pop with rich contrast and sharp detail, and text appears supercrisp. So everything — from class presentations to movies to games — looks truly stunning.
The author estimates that a web app could have “10x the potential user base from day one.” This is an estimate, not a measured market statistic: the essay gives no calculation or external market data behind it. Its useful point is directional—the web route was seen as better aligned with broad reach—not that the figure applies generally.

Building the app was only part of the work. The author lists code signing, notarization, DMG packaging, and a manual update mechanism as additional distribution tasks. At the time of writing, the app was not code-signed, and users saw a security warning when launching it for the first time. These details describe the author’s experience at that time, rather than a statement about the app’s current availability or distribution status.

Discovery still takes work
The author also found that a native Mac app did not come with an App Store discovery algorithm to rely on. In the essay’s account, getting the product noticed required active marketing. That is another trade-off to weigh alongside platform reach: choosing a delivery format does not, by itself, bring users to a product.

For another project, I would start with the product’s constraints and success criteria rather than treating native or web as a default. The axes that mattered here were privacy and file handling, access to platform APIs, responsiveness during large-PDF work, distribution effort, supported operating systems, and the burden of finding users. The essay offers a personal rationale on those dimensions, not a controlled comparison of the two architectures.

- Favor native when: local file handling and specific macOS frameworks are central requirements, and a Mac-only audience is acceptable.
- Favor web when: broad access across operating systems is the leading goal and the product can meet its requirements without depending on macOS-only APIs.
- Revisit the decision when: the intended audience expands beyond Mac users, distribution friction becomes a major obstacle, or the product’s privacy and technical needs change.
My decision was right for this PDF tool’s stated priorities. I would choose differently if reach mattered more than macOS-specific capabilities and local-first design.
