Keep Tiled as the editable source of your maps, export them as JSON, and write a TypeScript conversion layer that turns the map data and its artwork into PixiJS display objects. Tiled supplies the map structure; PixiJS supplies asset loading and rendering. You must implement the bridge between them—neither PixiJS’s Assets API nor @pixi/tilemap is, by itself, a Tiled JSON importer.
How the Tiled-to-PixiJS workflow fits together
Tiled’s JSON map format describes map dimensions, orientation, layers, properties, and tileset references. Tiled’s documentation says it can export maps as JSON; its generic format guide also describes JSON as a commonly supported format and says Tiled can open JSON maps and tilesets. That makes JSON a useful interchange point for a TypeScript application, but it does not define how your game must render every map feature.

The application therefore needs a mapping layer: code that reads the exported structure, preserves the semantics the project uses, resolves tile references, and constructs PixiJS objects. Keep the original Tiled project, tilesets, and image files in the asset pipeline so the map remains editable in its authoring tool.

Keep Tiled as the source of truth
Export the map as JSON and retain the Tiled project and referenced assets alongside it. Treat the JSON as generated or exchanged map data, not as a reason to discard the editable project.

Load JSON and artwork with PixiJS
PixiJS v8’s Assets API loads resources asynchronously. Its
Assets.load()call returns a promise that resolves to the loaded resource, and the guide includes JSON and common image or texture resources. Use paths configured for your application, await the loads, and handle failures rather than assuming every file is available. PixiJS’s loader handles resource loading; your code still interprets Tiled’s map structure. -
Parse layer types without flattening away meaning
Tiled maps can contain different layer kinds, including tile layers and object groups. Define TypeScript types for the portions of the JSON your application supports, and convert them into an internal representation that retains needed properties, object data, and layer relationships. Avoid reducing everything to a tile array before checking whether gameplay or rendering needs information from other layer types.

Resolve global tile IDs before drawing
A tile layer’s values are Tiled global tile IDs (GIDs), not necessarily local indexes within one tileset. Each tileset’s
firstgididentifies the first global ID belonging to it. For each non-empty GID, first decode its high-bit flip/rotation flags, then find the tileset whose range contains the remaining ID, and convert it to a local tile ID by subtracting that tileset’sfirstgid. Preserve the decoded transform for the rendering step; discarding it can make flipped or rotated map tiles render incorrectly. See Tiled’s global tile ID reference and JSON map format.The Tool Desk

Construct PixiJS display objects
Use loaded textures to build the display objects your application needs. PixiJS primitives are one option;
@pixi/tilemapis another for low-level rectangular tile rendering. Its documentation describes a renderer, not a Tiled parser. The surfaced compatibility guidance maps PixiJS v8 to tilemap kit v5, but verify the package version and API against the dependency installed in your project before relying on that pairing.Rank #3

Define what “back” means for edits
If the application changes map state, choose whether it writes a Tiled-compatible JSON structure or saves only game-specific state. A compatible writer must preserve the fields and semantics the project relies on; do not assume a renderer’s internal objects can be serialized back to Tiled without conversion. Tiled can be extended with JavaScript, supports custom map and tileset export, and publishes TypeScript definitions for its scripting API through
@mapeditor/tiled-api. See the scripting reference and custom export formats.
Choose runtime parsing or a project-specific export
Both approaches can fit a Tiled-authored workflow. The decision depends on which map features your game needs and where you want the conversion logic to live; the documentation does not establish a performance winner or a universal maintenance advantage.
