For the best camera in a lightweight drone, the DJI Mini 5 Pro is the strongest choice, with one condition: its listed takeoff weight is 249.9 g with an approximate tolerance of ±4 g, so a given unit can land above the 250 g threshold that matters in the United States. If you need an aircraft that is clearly under 249 g in its standard configuration, the DJI Mini 4 Pro is the cleaner pick. If weight matters less than camera options, the DJI Air 3S and DJI Mavic 4 Pro add more cameras. Every advertised range figure is a manufacturer number measured under controlled conditions. None of them tells you how far you can legally or safely fly.

Lightweight picks
DJI Mini 5 Pro: best camera under the weight line
The Mini 5 Pro has the largest sensor of the lightweight options here. Its 1-inch CMOS sensor is physically bigger than the 1/1.3-inch sensor in the Mini 4 Pro, which generally means more light per pixel and better low-light and dynamic-range performance, although the actual image quality depends on lens, processing and the shooting conditions. DJI also lists 4K video at up to 120 fps, which gives you smooth slow motion from a small aircraft.
The weight is the constraint. DJI lists 249.9 g with a tolerance of about ±4 g, which puts a single unit somewhere between roughly 245.9 g and 253.9 g. Under US rules, anything at or above 250 g requires registration, so you cannot assume every Mini 5 Pro escapes that requirement. Check the weight of your own unit and configuration before you fly. The Plus battery also changes both the weight and the regulatory class of the aircraft, so a longer-flying configuration is not automatically a lighter one.

DJI Mini 4 Pro: the clearest standard-battery option under 249 g
DJI lists the standard Mini 4 Pro below 249 g, and it warns that adding the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus takes the aircraft over that mark. If your priority is a configuration that stays on the lighter side of the threshold without a weight check, this is the more predictable choice. Its 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor with 48 MP effective resolution is smaller than the Mini 5 Pro’s, so expect a visible step down in low light and in dynamic range. DJI lists maximum flight time of 34 minutes on the standard battery and 45 minutes on the Plus battery. According to DJI’s specification page, the Plus battery is not sold in Europe.
Larger camera systems
DJI Air 3S: two cameras for framing flexibility
At 724 g, the Air 3S is far heavier than the Mini models, which means US recreational flyers must register it. What it adds is a second focal length: a 1-inch 50 MP wide camera and a 1/1.3-inch 48 MP medium tele camera. The telephoto lens lets you frame a subject from farther away, so you do not have to fly as close to get a tighter shot. That is a framing advantage, not a change to flight rules or to the distance the aircraft is allowed to operate from. DJI lists 45 minutes of maximum flight time and a 32 km maximum flight distance under controlled, windless-equivalent test conditions.

DJI Mavic 4 Pro: the flagship camera system
The Mavic 4 Pro is the choice when image quality and camera options matter more than carrying weight. DJIUSA’s comparison describes a 4/3-inch 100 MP main camera within a three-camera system, 51 minutes of maximum flight time, and a 30 km O4+ transmission distance. The same comparison states that FAA registration is required for this aircraft. The sources reviewed do not give its takeoff weight or its maximum flight distance, so do not infer either figure from the camera specifications.

What the distance numbers do and do not mean
Drone marketing puts several different distances under one word, “range.” Before you compare models, separate them:

- Maximum transmission distance is the radio-link figure. DJI’s Mini 5 Pro page gives up to 20 km for FCC regions, but only under unobstructed, interference-free conditions. Its own table lists shorter approximate distances for obstructed or interference-heavy scenarios.
- Maximum flight distance is a manufacturer test figure, typically measured in a controlled, windless-equivalent environment until the battery runs down. For the Mini 5 Pro it is listed separately from transmission, at 21 km on the standard battery and 32 km on the Plus battery.
- Usable mission distance is what you can actually do on a given day. It has to account for wind, obstacles, radio interference, camera use, a battery reserve for the return trip, and the fact that you have to fly back. DJI’s own pages note that real-world experience can differ from the test figures.
- Legal flight distance depends on local rules and the type of operation. A long transmission figure does not change what you are permitted to do.
Maximum flight time works the same way. The 52-minute figure for the Mini 5 Pro is the top figure for the Plus battery, not the time you should plan a shoot around. Build your plan from the flight time you measure yourself, after keeping a reserve.
Weight and registration in the United States
The Federal Aviation Administration requires registration for recreational drones weighing 250 g (0.55 lb) or more. Aircraft under that weight can fly under the recreational exception, which means you do not need to register them, but the rules still apply to the flight itself.

- Registered drones must comply with Remote ID requirements.
- Recreational flyers must complete the TRUST knowledge test.
- Weigh your aircraft in the configuration you fly, including the battery you actually use, rather than relying on the base spec.
- Mini 5 Pro: the nominal 249.9 g figure sits just under the threshold, but the stated tolerance can place a unit above it.
- Mini 4 Pro: the standard configuration is under 249 g, and the Plus battery takes it above.
- Air 3S and Mavic 4 Pro: both are above 250 g by the figures available, so they fall under the registration requirement.
This is US-specific guidance. Flyers in other countries must check their national aviation authority’s rules for weight classes, registration, and remote identification.

Visual line of sight is the real limit
Under the FAA’s recreational rules, you must keep the aircraft within visual line of sight at all times. The agency’s recreational-flyer guidance puts it this way: “Recreational operators must fly their drone within visual line of sight so they can see if other aircraft are near them and safely avoid.” That requirement caps the practical distance of a flight far more tightly than the figures in the spec table, which is why a 20 km or 30 km transmission number is not a flying range you can use in the US as a recreational operator.

Choosing by use case
- You want the best camera and can manage the weight: Choose the Mini 5 Pro. Weigh your unit and decide, on that measured number, whether you will register it.
- You need a standard configuration under 249 g without a weight check: Choose the Mini 4 Pro, and leave the Plus battery off if you are staying under the threshold.
- You want a second focal length for tighter framing: Choose the Air 3S and plan for registration.
- Image quality and a full camera system matter more than weight: Choose the Mavic 4 Pro, and confirm its weight and flight distance directly with DJI before you buy.
Whichever you pick, judge the range by the conditions you will fly in, not by the headline transmission figure.
