Handoff usually fails because one of its shared prerequisites is missing: both devices must use the same Apple Account, have Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth enabled, and have Handoff turned on. The source device must be unlocked and actively showing a supported task, while the receiving device needs the same app installed. Work through those checks in that order before treating this as a hardware problem.
Handoff and Universal Clipboard are related but different. Handoff moves an open activity—such as a Safari page or an unfinished Pages document—to another Apple device. Universal Clipboard moves copied text, images or files. They share account, wireless and Continuity requirements, so one can fail while the other still works.

What Handoff is supposed to do
Apple describes Handoff as a way to “start work on one Apple device, then switch to another nearby device and pick up where you left off.” The feature transfers the current activity in a supported app; it does not mirror the entire iPhone screen or launch arbitrary apps on your Mac. Apple’s current instructions are in Use Handoff to continue tasks on your other Apple devices.
For example, you can open a web page in Safari on iPhone and continue it in Safari on Mac, or resume a document in Pages if Pages is installed on both devices. Calendar, Contacts, FaceTime, Keynote, Mail, Maps, Pages, Numbers, Reminders and Safari are among Apple’s examples. Some third-party apps also implement Handoff, but support is app-specific.

A Handoff hand-off normally appears as an app icon on the receiving Mac’s Dock. You can also press Command-Tab and look for the Handoff app icon in the App Switcher. If the icon never appears, start with prerequisites and app support. If the icon appears but selecting it does not restore the activity, the problem is more likely the task state, app installation or software condition.
First, identify which Continuity feature is failing
| Symptom | Feature involved | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| No app icon for an activity opened on iPhone | Handoff | Same Apple Account, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, Handoff setting, supported app and an active unlocked task |
| Handoff icon appears, but the activity does not continue | Handoff | Whether the source app is still open in front, the receiving app is installed, and both systems meet Handoff requirements |
| Text, an image or a file copied on one device will not paste on the other | Universal Clipboard | Its own Continuity requirements, then updates, restart and VPN/local-network settings |
| Only one app fails while others work | Usually app-level Handoff support or task state | Test another Apple-supported app instead of assuming the devices are incompatible |
| Every supported app fails in both directions | Shared Continuity setup | Account, wireless radios, Handoff switches, compatibility and software updates |
These comparisons narrow the investigation; Apple does not publish a guaranteed cause for each symptom.
1. Confirm the same Apple Account on both devices
Handoff requires both devices to be signed in to the same Apple Account. On iPhone, open Settings and check the account name at the top. On Mac, open System Settings and select Apple Account (called Apple ID on older macOS versions). Make sure the account identity matches character for character.
If one device is signed out, or each device uses a different account, sign in with the account you intend to use and allow the sign-in process to finish before testing. A family member’s account, a work-managed account and a personal account are not interchangeable for Handoff.
2. Turn on Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth on both devices
Apple lists Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth as required on both the iPhone and Mac. Turn both radios on even if the Mac is connected to the internet through Ethernet; Handoff uses the local Continuity connection, not merely internet access.

Pair the USB-C Charge Cable with a compatible USB-C power adapter to conveniently charge your devices from a wall outlet and even take advantage of the fast-charging feature on select iPhone and Mac models.
- WHAT’S IN THE BOX — Apple USB-C Woven Charge Cable only. Power adapter sold separately.
- CABLE LENGTH — 2 meters (6 feet).
- On iPhone, open Settings and turn on Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth.
- On Mac, open System Settings, then use Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth to confirm both are enabled.
- Keep the devices close while testing. Apple’s related Mac and Universal Clipboard guidance describes a range of up to 10 metres (30 feet); the core Handoff article simply says the devices should be nearby.
Do not assume that buying a router, Bluetooth adapter or another accessory is an Apple-supported Handoff fix. The documented checks begin with the radios already built into the devices.
3. Enable Handoff using the label on your software version
On iPhone
Open Settings > General, then look for AirPlay & Continuity or AirPlay & Handoff. Turn on Handoff. Apple’s iPhone User Guide documents the label variation.
On a newer Mac
Open System Settings > General, then choose AirDrop & Continuity or AirDrop & Handoff. Turn on the Handoff option that allows Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.
On an older Mac
Open System Preferences > General and enable the Handoff option there. Apple’s current Handoff article describes System Settings paths for macOS Ventura 13 and later and the System Preferences path for earlier releases: Apple Support Handoff instructions.
If you cannot find the switch, use the search field in Settings or System Settings for “Handoff.” Do not confuse Handoff with AirDrop; they are separate Continuity features, even though newer Mac versions group their controls under a similarly named panel.

4. Make sure the app and task are eligible
Use a supported app on both devices
The app must support Handoff and be installed on the receiving device. Opening a task in an iPhone-only app cannot create a Mac Handoff icon. For a controlled test, use one of Apple’s documented examples—Safari, Mail, Calendar, Maps, Reminders, Pages, Numbers or Keynote—provided that app is present on both devices.

Leave the active task in front
Open the app on the source device, start or resume the activity, and leave that activity visible. For iPhone-to-Mac testing, keep the iPhone app open in the foreground rather than switching to the Home Screen or another app. A stale background process may no longer advertise the task.
Test the opposite direction
Try Mac-to-iPhone as well as iPhone-to-Mac. On Mac, leave the supported document or page open, then check the iPhone’s app switcher or the Handoff suggestion that appears according to Apple’s interface. If one direction works and the other does not, record the direction, app and task; that observation points to a narrower app or task-state issue than a total Continuity outage.
5. Unlock the source device and keep both devices nearby
The source device must be unlocked, and it must be displaying the active task. Unlock the iPhone before looking for the icon on the Mac. Keep the devices physically near each other while you test rather than moving the iPhone to another room.
On the Mac, check the Dock for the Handoff icon. If the Dock is crowded or set to hide, press Command-Tab and look for the Handoff app icon in the App Switcher. Select it once; repeatedly clicking unrelated app icons can make it harder to tell whether the hand-off was offered.

6. Check Handoff compatibility separately from Universal Clipboard
Apple’s current Handoff article links to system requirements for older devices. The separate Continuity features and requirements for Apple devices page lists explicit model and operating-system minimums for Universal Clipboard, not a complete Handoff compatibility list.
For Universal Clipboard, Apple states: iPhone 5 or later with iOS 10 or later; Mac Pro introduced in 2013 or later, or other Mac models introduced in 2012 or later, with macOS Sierra 10.12 or later. Those figures apply to Universal Clipboard and must not be presented as the Handoff model list. If you are diagnosing Handoff, follow the Handoff requirements link in Apple’s Handoff support article rather than inferring compatibility from the clipboard table.
Why this distinction matters
A device combination can meet Universal Clipboard’s published minimums while still requiring a separate Handoff check. Conversely, a Handoff icon problem is not proof that clipboard compatibility is broken. Treat the two features as separate tests even though they share account, wireless and Continuity foundations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. If Universal Clipboard is the actual failure
Copy something small on one device, then paste promptly on the other. Universal Clipboard is a temporary clipboard transfer, not a permanent synchronized history. Keep both devices signed in to the same Apple Account, with Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and Handoff enabled, and keep them nearby.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the clipboard still fails after those checks, install available Apple software updates and restart both devices. Apple’s Universal Clipboard guidance is available at Universal Clipboard support. A VPN configuration that blocks local networking can interfere with some Continuity features, so temporarily inspect the VPN settings or test with the VPN disconnected according to your organization’s policy. Do not assume the VPN is the cause unless behavior changes when its local-network restrictions are removed.

8. Update and restart after the basic setup is correct
When the account, radios, Handoff switches, app and task all look correct, install any available Apple software updates on both devices. Updates can contain Continuity fixes and also bring the settings labels into line with Apple’s current instructions.
- Save work in open apps.
- Install pending iOS, iPadOS or macOS updates through each device’s Software Update screen.
- Restart the iPhone and Mac after updating.
- Repeat the controlled test with a supported app, an unlocked iPhone and both devices nearby.
Apple does not promise that an update or restart resolves every Handoff failure. Their role is to remove a stale software state after the explicit prerequisites have been verified.
Use the symptom to choose the next test
The Handoff icon is completely absent
- Recheck the Apple Account identity on both devices.
- Verify Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and Handoff are enabled on both.
- Use a supported app installed on both devices.
- Leave the source task open and in front, unlock the iPhone, and move the devices close together.
- Check the Mac Dock and Command-Tab App Switcher.
The icon appears but the task does not open
- Confirm the receiving app is installed and updated.
- Try reopening the source task and leaving it visible before selecting the icon again.
- Test a second Apple-supported app to determine whether the failure is app-specific.
- Install updates and restart both devices.
Only copy and paste fails
- Stop troubleshooting the Handoff icon; test Universal Clipboard on its own.
- Use the Universal Clipboard model and OS requirements, not an inferred Handoff list.
- Check for VPN settings that prevent local networking.
Nothing works in either direction
Repeat the checklist from the beginning rather than changing several settings at once. Record the devices’ software versions, the direction tested and the app used. That record makes it easier to identify whether the failure is universal or limited to one app.

What not to conclude
A missing icon does not by itself prove that Bluetooth hardware is defective, that the Wi‑Fi router is incompatible or that a repair utility is required. Apple’s documented remedies are account, settings, connectivity, app support, compatibility, updates and restart checks. Replacement devices, connectivity accessories and repair parts are not established fixes from these instructions.
Likewise, success in Universal Clipboard does not guarantee that every app supports Handoff, and failure in one third-party app does not establish that Handoff is broken system-wide. Use Apple’s supported apps as a baseline, then compare the same task in the app that is giving you trouble.
When to seek Apple-specific help
If both devices use the same Apple Account, all radios and Handoff switches are on, a supported app is installed on both, the source device is unlocked and nearby, compatibility is appropriate, and updates plus a restart make no difference, the remaining cause is not identified by Apple’s general checklist. At that point, provide Apple Support with the exact app, direction, device models, software versions and whether the Handoff icon is absent or merely fails to open. Those details are more useful than reporting only that “Continuity does not work.”
