If Google Photos storage hasn’t gone down after you deleted files, first check whether they’re still in Trash: deleted items normally remain there for 30 days unless you permanently delete them. Even after emptying Trash, Google says the account’s available-space display may take time to refresh. Other common explanations are that the files did not count toward your quota, or that Drive, Gmail, or pending backups still affect the account’s storage picture.
Why Google Photos storage may not change after deletion
The files are still in Trash
Deleting a photo in Google Photos does not immediately remove it permanently. Google Photos Help says deleted photos and videos stay in Trash for 30 days before permanent deletion. Until then, the deletion is not the same as removing the items from Trash; empty Trash or permanently delete selected items to remove that waiting period. The storage display has not refreshed
After files are deleted and Trash is emptied, Google One Help says available space updates “after a short period.” For multiple files deleted at once, Google says the update may take 48–72 hours. Separately, Google suggests using advanced cleanup if the account still appears full after 30 minutes. These are guidance points, not a promise that every account will update on a fixed schedule. Google One Help: Manage your storage in Drive, Gmail & Photos.
The deleted items did not count toward storage
Some items may not have been using account storage in the first place. Google Photos Help lists certain Pixel uploads; qualifying Storage saver (formerly High quality) or Express quality photos and videos backed up before June 1, 2021; and media saved through partner sharing while the partner continues sharing. Eligibility depends on the account, device, quality setting, and backup history. Deleting an item in these categories may not reduce the displayed available-space usage. Drive, Gmail, or pending backups still affect the account
Google Account storage is shared by Photos, Drive, and Gmail, so removing Photos files may not make the overall account look less full if the other services continue using space. Storage figures can also differ between Google products; check the account’s storage breakdown rather than relying on a single service-level figure. Google’s over-quota cleanup target can include both the amount over quota and pending backup. On mobile, the Photos pending-backup estimate covers the device being checked, not pending items on other devices. Google Photos Help: How Google storage works and Google Photos Help: Check your backup status.
How to check what is holding up the storage change
- Confirm the account and inspect its storage breakdown. Make sure Google Photos or the browser is signed in to the same Google Account whose quota you are checking. Open Google Photos’ storage management or the Google One storage manager, then review usage by service and the available cleanup categories, including Photos, Drive, Gmail, and Trash. Availability of the Photos storage management tool can vary by account; Google notes that supervised and K–12 school accounts may not have it. Google Photos Help: How Google storage works.
- Check Google Photos Trash. If the deleted items are there, they have not yet passed the normal 30-day retention period. Empty Trash or permanently delete only the selected items you are sure you no longer need. This is irreversible: permanently deleted photos cannot be restored.
- Allow time for the account figure to update. Google says the available-space display updates after a short period once files are deleted and Trash is emptied. For multiple deleted files, allow for the 48–72-hour window Google gives; if the account still appears full after 30 minutes, Google suggests advanced cleanup. These timings describe separate support guidance, not a universal guarantee.
- Check whether the deleted files counted against quota. Consider whether they were qualifying older uploads, certain Pixel uploads, or items still shared by a partner. If they were not consuming storage, their deletion would not be expected to free space.
- Review the rest of the account and backup status. Check Drive and Gmail usage along with Photos. If the account is over quota, review the cleanup target and pending-backup amount; on mobile, remember that the pending estimate is for the device you are viewing, not all devices.
- Use Google’s account-specific help if the figures remain unexplained. If the account still looks inconsistent after the stated update windows and the storage breakdown does not explain it, follow Google’s advanced cleanup or account-help route. The cited Google guidance does not establish a universal cache-clearing, reinstall, or sign-out fix.
Before permanently deleting photos
Emptying Trash or permanently deleting selected files removes the option to restore them. Google also warns that deleting in Google Photos can remove the same backed-up items from devices where the app is installed and backup is enabled. If your aim is to remove cloud copies but keep the device copies, use Google’s specific procedure for that situation rather than deleting them normally in the app. Google says deletion from Photos is not automatically propagated to Blogger, Drive, Gmail, or YouTube; permanently deleted content cannot be restored through Google Takeout. If the account is still over quota
Once you have checked Trash, the service breakdown, and pending backups, you can free more space in the services using it or consider buying additional Google One storage. More storage adds capacity; it does not repair or accelerate a stale display. Google One plan availability and options vary by account and location.
