Why Google Maps may choose a route with a longer ETA
Fuel-efficient routing can favour savings over the shortest ETA
Google says Maps uses an AI prediction model to estimate the fuel or energy use of route options. If the route predicted to use the least fuel or energy is not the fastest, Maps may recommend it when the expected savings are meaningful and the added driving time is small. That is one documented reason the recommended route can take longer than another option.

This does not mean the app is calculating only fuel use, nor does it guarantee that every slower recommendation is fuel-efficient. The available options and the recommendation can depend on the trip, vehicle type, region, app version and settings. Fuel-efficient routing is a comparison among possible routes, not a measurement of what your car will consume on a particular journey.
The trade-off described by Google is specifically a small increase in driving time in exchange for meaningful predicted fuel or energy savings. It is not a promise that Maps will always choose that route, or that any route with a higher ETA must be the fuel-saving one. The exact threshold for “small” or “meaningful,” and the formula used to rank every route for a particular trip, are not published in the cited Google material.

Traffic forecasts and road characteristics can affect routing
Google has also described using predicted traffic and characteristics such as road quality, road size and directness. Road quality may distinguish paved roads from gravel, dirt or mud. Google Maps Product Manager Johann Lau has said that if Google predicts traffic is likely to become heavy in one direction, Maps may find a lower-traffic alternative.
Those descriptions identify factors Google considers; they are not a complete account of how it ranks routes. Maps does not publish a full per-trip formula, so an individual driver generally cannot tell which factor caused a specific recommendation unless the app explains it for that trip. A route that looks less direct on the map might have a lower predicted traffic burden or use different roads, but that is not proof of why it was selected.
For example, a route with more distance on the map might still have a lower predicted ETA if another road is expected to be busy. Conversely, a route that looks direct may use road types you do not want or may be excluded by a preference. These are ways to think through the alternatives, not a diagnosis of a particular recommendation: the factors Google describes do not reveal the exact reason for every route shown.
“Recommended” does not necessarily mean shortest or fastest
A route recommendation is not a promise that the route has the least distance or the lowest ETA. Compare the displayed time and distance for each available option, then decide which trade-off matters for your trip. The estimates are predictions: traffic and road conditions can change after you set out.

It helps to separate three questions: Which route is estimated to take the least time? Which covers the least distance? And which best matches your preferences about tolls, road types or fuel efficiency? The answer can differ. A route can be shorter but slower, or have a higher ETA while offering a different mix of roads or predicted fuel use. Maps’ recommendation does not, by itself, tell you which of those considerations mattered most.
How to choose a different route in the Google Maps app
- Get directions to your destination. Review the routes shown on the map and compare their estimated times and distances. If you are planning ahead, make sure the comparison reflects the time you expect to travel, rather than assuming the displayed estimate applies equally at every hour.
- Select another route. Google’s Android directions help describes alternatives as gray lines. Tap the route you want to use; the selected route changes. Route appearance and interaction can vary across devices and app versions. Check that the route you intended to choose is now selected before you start following directions.
- Review route preferences if an option is missing or unsuitable. Check whether preferences to avoid tolls, highways or ferries are active. Google’s menu wording and the available controls can differ by version and location. A preference can affect which alternatives are offered, so an option you expect may not appear while a relevant avoid setting is enabled.
- Check the fuel-efficient route preference if that trade-off is your concern. Google’s 2025 customization guidance places route preferences under Navigation settings and discusses vehicle type for fuel-efficient routing. The exact setting name and availability may vary, so look for the fuel-efficient routing preference in the settings available in your app. If you do not see the control, do not assume it is available on your device or in your region.
- Match the estimate to your actual travel time. For a trip to one destination, set a planned departure or arrival time so Maps can estimate traffic for when you expect to travel. A route comparison based on current conditions may not describe the traffic forecast for a later trip.
If your immediate goal is simply to avoid the suggested route, the most direct action is to choose a displayed alternative. If your goal is to change what routes are considered, review the avoid-tolls, highways or ferries preferences and the fuel-efficient routing preference where available. Those are different actions: selecting an alternate route addresses this trip, while preferences can shape route choices more generally.
Selecting an alternative changes your chosen route for that trip. The cited Google guidance does not promise a control that always forces Maps to choose the minimum-ETA or most-direct option. If the options remain unsuitable, you can still compare the route details shown and make a selection from the alternatives that are available.
Change route options or travel time on desktop
- Enter your destination and request directions.
- Open Options and choose whether to avoid tolls or motorways.
- To plan for a different time, select Leave now and set a departure or arrival time for a single-destination route.
- Select an alternative route on the map if you prefer it.
Desktop controls and labels can differ from the mobile app. If an option described here is not visible, its availability may depend on your platform, region or current Maps version. On desktop as on mobile, changing the departure or arrival time is useful when the trip is for one destination and you want the estimate to reflect a planned journey rather than the current moment.

What to compare before choosing a route
- Estimated time and distance: A lower ETA and a shorter distance are separate measures; compare both instead of assuming one implies the other. Look at the full set of routes Maps displays rather than interpreting the label “recommended” as a guarantee that the route is best by every measure.
- Tolls: Check whether a toll-avoidance preference is active and review any displayed toll estimate. Google says toll prices are estimates that can depend on the date, time and payment method, including whether the estimate assumes a toll pass. When the actual charge matters, confirm it with the road operator. A toll route is not automatically the fastest or cheapest choice: compare the displayed ETA and route details as well as the estimated charge.
- Road type: Consider whether the alternatives use roads you want to avoid and whether highways, motorways or ferries are excluded by your settings. These preferences may alter the choices available, so check the settings before concluding that Maps has no alternative.
- Fuel or energy preference and vehicle type: Where those controls are available, check whether the fuel-efficient routing preference and selected vehicle type fit your trip. Google’s guidance discusses vehicle type in connection with fuel-efficient routing, but feature availability and labels can vary.
- Departure time: Make sure the estimate reflects when you will travel; a route comparison based on “now” may not represent conditions at a later departure time. For a single destination, set a planned leave or arrival time to compare a forecast for the intended trip.
It is also worth deciding what matters most before tapping a route. If arrival time is the priority, compare the ETAs. If avoiding a toll is important, review the toll preference and any displayed price. If you want to avoid a particular kind of road, check the related route setting. Maps can show options and estimates, but the driver has to weigh the trade-offs that matter for the journey.
What Google’s fuel-efficient routing estimate does—and does not—tell you
Fuel-efficient routing is an estimate of relative fuel or energy use across route options, not a measured promise of what your individual trip will consume. Google reported that Maps’ fuel-efficient routes had enabled an estimated reduction of 2.9 million metric tons of greenhouse-gas emissions from their launch in late 2021 through the end of 2023. That is a cumulative historical estimate reported by Google in 2024, not a measured saving for one driver, nor a current annual total.
Likewise, an ETA is a forecast rather than a guarantee. Google’s public descriptions explain some inputs to routing but do not expose the complete ranking logic for a particular journey. Use the displayed alternatives and available controls to make the choice that fits your priorities rather than treating the recommendation as an explanation of every route decision.

Common reasons an expected route may not appear
If a route you have in mind is missing, first check whether a relevant preference is active: avoiding tolls, highways or motorways, or ferries can affect the options shown. Then check the planned travel time. A route comparison for “now” may differ from one for the time you intend to leave, because Maps can use estimated traffic for a planned departure or arrival on a single-destination trip.
Also keep in mind that route preferences and features are not identical everywhere. Google’s help and customization guidance note platform and availability differences; labels may change with the app version or region, and fuel-efficient routing controls may depend on vehicle type. If a menu item is absent, that absence does not establish that the route is impossible or that a particular factor caused Maps to recommend something else. Use the alternatives actually displayed and select the one that suits your needs.
Finally, route estimates can change as conditions change. A route that appeared preferable before departure may no longer have the same ETA later. The route display is a prediction based on the information and time used for that estimate, not a guarantee that conditions will stay fixed during the drive.
