Turn on the preference in the Google Maps app

Return to Settings, open Your vehicles, and choose the engine type that best matches the car you will use.
Google’s labels can vary slightly by platform or app version. If you do not see the preference, availability may be the reason: Google says the feature is offered only in select countries or regions, and its help information does not list every supported location.
Choose the engine type that matches your vehicle
The engine selection affects which route Maps estimates to be most efficient. Google’s guidance maps vehicle types to these options:

Google says motorcycles are assumed to use gas or petrol. For a plug-in hybrid, choose according to how it is mostly driven: Hybrid if it mostly runs on fuel, or Electric if it mostly runs on electricity.

Change the preference after getting directions
You can adjust the route preference or engine type without first returning to the main settings screen:

Enter a destination and request driving directions.

Tap More, then Options.

Change the fuel-efficiency preference or engine type, then tap Done.

The exact labels may differ slightly across app versions and platforms. Review the displayed routes after applying the change; Maps may recommend a different route for another engine type.

What changes when the preference is on or off
With the preference on, Maps considers efficiency alongside live traffic, route simplicity and road conditions. If there are multiple routes, it highlights the one it estimates to be most efficient. That route may not be the fastest.
With the preference off, Maps prioritizes the fastest route. It can still mark an efficient alternative with a green leaf, so the indicator may appear even when the preference is disabled.
For example, Google notes that diesel vehicles can have a greater relative fuel-economy advantage on highways, while hybrids and EVs may benefit from stop-and-go city driving and hilly routes through regenerative braking. These are tendencies in the route estimate, not a promise that a particular journey will use less fuel or energy.

How Maps estimates efficiency—and how to compare routes
Google says the estimate draws on insights from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and data from the European Environment Agency. Its stated factors include average regional vehicle fuel or energy consumption, hill steepness, stop-and-go traffic patterns and road type.

Maps favors an efficient route when its estimated arrival time is roughly the same as the fastest route. If the savings are too small or the trip would take significantly longer, it may instead show relative fuel or energy savings between routes. Compare the displayed arrival times and savings, then decide whether the estimated efficiency difference is worth any additional travel time for your trip.
Google Maps Help states: “Energy-efficient routes for EVs don’t include stops to charge.” Check the route and plan charging separately when driving an EV; the efficiency recommendation does not account for charging stops.
Google’s help information does not publish a typical-trip fuel-saving percentage. Treat any displayed savings as a relative estimate for the routes being compared, not as a guaranteed amount or a general forecast for every journey.

Check the app and platform. These steps apply to the Google Maps app on Android and iPhone or iPad. Google Maps built into a car may have different availability or functionality depending on the manufacturer, region and data plan.

Look in Navigation settings. The toggle is under Profile picture or initial → Settings → Navigation → Route options. The engine selection is under Settings → Your vehicles.

Account for regional availability. Google describes the feature as available only in select countries or regions. If the option is absent, the feature may not be available where you are; the help information does not provide a complete region list.

Check the vehicle selection. If Maps is recommending an unexpected route, confirm that the engine type matches the car and, for a plug-in hybrid, whether it mostly runs on fuel or electricity.

What to expect from the setting
This is a route-planning preference, not a change to the vehicle or a guaranteed savings tool. Maps weighs its efficiency estimate against factors such as traffic, roads and arrival time, and its recommendation can vary with the selected engine type. Use the route comparison to make a trip-specific choice rather than assuming the highlighted route will always be fastest or produce a fixed reduction in fuel use.
