Wi-Fi shares radio airtime, operates half-duplex, and loses capacity to protocol traffic, interference and distance. A gigabit Ethernet connection is usually more predictable when the devices and every link in the path support gigabit speeds.
What “gigabit” means on Wi-Fi and Ethernet
A Wi-Fi link rate is the negotiated signaling rate between a client and an access point (AP), not the speed a website or speed test will measure. Cisco explains that real throughput is lower after acknowledgements, beacons, control traffic and gaps between frames are accounted for. Its guide estimates roughly 65%–70% of the data rate used in a throughput test in its example; an 866 Mbps client data rate, for instance, might yield about 600 Mbps in that test. This is an approximate example, not a universal Wi-Fi-to-Ethernet ratio. Cisco’s Wi-Fi throughput guide

Ethernet also has protocol overhead, but a wired link does not share radio airtime with neighboring networks, and it is generally less affected by distance within a normal cable run. A gigabit Ethernet port indicates a nominal link capacity of 1 Gbps; actual internet-test results can still be limited by the router, service plan, test server, computer, or another part of the network path.

Why Wi-Fi can fall behind
Radio airtime is shared
Wi-Fi devices take turns using a channel. Other clients on your network and nearby networks can consume airtime, leaving less available for one device. Maximum rates assume idealized conditions; Cisco notes that its maximum-speed scenario assumes a single client and AP in an isolated place without other users on the channel. Cisco’s testing guidance

Wi-Fi is half-duplex and uses airtime for overhead
On a Wi-Fi channel, a device does not transmit and receive simultaneously. Acknowledgements and management traffic, including beacons, plus the pauses between frames all use airtime without carrying your application data. This helps explain why a high displayed link rate can coexist with a much lower speed-test result.
The router and client work as a pair
Both ends must support the features needed for a faster connection. A Wi-Fi 6 laptop connecting to a Wi-Fi 5 router uses Wi-Fi 5 capabilities for that connection; a newer router likewise cannot give an older client extra antennas, spatial streams, channel width or a newer standard. Intel describes this fallback behavior in its Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 5 compatibility guidance. Drivers and device configuration can also affect performance.

Band, signal and obstructions matter
Distance and walls can weaken the signal, prompting lower link rates or retransmissions. The 2.4 GHz band typically reaches farther but is often more crowded; 5 GHz is commonly used for higher data rates, while 6 GHz offers additional spectrum for compatible Wi-Fi 6E devices. Intel lists broad typical over-the-air maximums of up to 100 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, 1 Gbps on 5 GHz and 2 Gbps on 6 GHz. These vendor figures are not household speed-test guarantees: results depend on both devices, configuration and local radio conditions. Intel’s band comparison

An extender that receives and retransmits over the same radio has limited radio capacity for serving clients, so it can be slower than a direct connection to the router. Test without the extender to see whether it is part of the bottleneck. Intel’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting checks

Compare Wi-Fi and Ethernet fairly
- Use the same computer and speed-test endpoint for both tests, if possible. Connect Ethernet directly to the router or AP.
- For Wi-Fi, begin close to the AP. Record the band and reported link rate, but treat the rate as an indicator of potential rather than measured throughput.
- Run tests under similar network conditions. Other devices using the connection or nearby networks using the same channel can change results.
- Check that the negotiated Ethernet link is gigabit and that the computer, router and intervening network path can support the rate you expect.
This comparison helps separate a Wi-Fi-specific limit from a slower internet plan, test endpoint or wired-network bottleneck.
Troubleshoot a slow Wi-Fi result
- Check the connection details. Confirm the Ethernet negotiated speed, Wi-Fi band and Wi-Fi link rate. The link rate is not the speed-test result.
- Verify compatible capabilities. Check the Wi-Fi generation and relevant features supported by both the router/AP and client; the connection uses capabilities available at both ends.
- Test near the AP. Reduce distance and solid obstructions between the access point and device. If the result improves substantially, signal conditions are likely involved.
- Consider airtime use. Retest when fewer devices are active. Nearby networks and other clients may compete for the same channel; channel behavior and available settings vary by region and router, so avoid applying fixed channel instructions without checking local guidance.
- Bypass the extender. Connect directly to the router and compare, especially if the extender uses the same radio to receive and retransmit.
- Check software and configuration. Update the client’s wireless driver where appropriate and review its network settings. Cisco identifies outdated drivers as one factor that can affect performance. Cisco’s throughput guide
- Upgrade only after locating the limit. A Wi-Fi 6E access point helps only if the client also supports Wi-Fi 6E, the band is available under local regulations, and the client connects on 6 GHz. Wider channels or a newer router do not guarantee faster results at distance or in every radio environment. Cisco’s Wi-Fi 6/6E and Wi-Fi 7 throughput guide
When Ethernet is the better choice
Choose Ethernet when consistent throughput and latency matter more than mobility and you can run a cable. Wi-Fi is useful when convenience or movement matters, but its performance changes with shared airtime and local signal conditions. Compare measured throughput, consistency, latency and cabling constraints rather than expecting Wi-Fi’s displayed link rate to match an Ethernet speed test.
