To stop a screen changing refresh modes when a video starts, turn off frame-rate matching on the device or app sending the video. On Apple TV, disable Match Frame Rate; on a supported Roku player, disable Auto-adjust display refresh rate. NVIDIA SHIELD’s documented match feature is a playback-time action, not a permanent global setting. TV and monitor VRR is a separate gaming feature, so switching it off may not stop a streaming app or box from requesting a display-mode change.
First identify what is changing the display mode
A movie starting with a brief black screen does not necessarily mean the TV has failed. The source may be asking the display to change modes, which can involve renegotiating the HDMI signal. The key is to identify which device is making the request: the TV’s built-in app, an HDMI streaming player, or a PC or console.

Frame rate describes how many frames per second are in the video. Refresh rate describes how often the screen refreshes. A player can keep a fixed output mode and fit video into it, or switch modes so the display refresh cadence better matches the video. Roku explains that a moving image is created by displaying still frames in quick succession in its refresh-rate guidance.

They are not interchangeable controls: disabling VRR on a TV or monitor may address a gaming issue but does not necessarily prevent a streaming device or app from matching video frame rate. Android TV documentation describes APIs that supported apps can use to request display matching, so behavior can depend on both app and hardware.

Turn off matching on the source device
Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD
- Open Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content.
- Turn off Match Frame Rate.
- Leave Match Dynamic Range unchanged unless you also want to stop dynamic-range changes. Apple treats these as separate controls; available choices depend on Apple TV model, connected display, and selected format. See Apple’s Match Content guidance and the Apple TV video settings guide.
Roku streaming player
- Open the player’s advanced display settings and find Auto-adjust display refresh rate.
- Disable it to prevent the player from switching to a title’s native format when playback begins.
Roku says this control is available only on supported players, and menu labels or availability can vary by model and software. Consult Roku’s instructions if the setting is absent.
NVIDIA SHIELD TV
SHIELD’s documented Match frame rate (beta) feature is launched from playback quick settings while video is playing. It is not described as a persistent system-wide automatic mode: the refresh rate returns to its original value after playback stops, and the action must be activated each time. To avoid a change, do not invoke the action; also check the app’s playback settings. NVIDIA notes that not all apps support it and some displays may have difficulty with certain refresh rates. See the SHIELD TV guide and NVIDIA’s feature article.

Other smart TVs, monitors, and Fire TV devices
There is no universal setting path for every TV brand, monitor, Fire TV streaming stick, app, or firmware version. Check the source device’s current playback or display settings and the model-specific manual. On a Fire TV Smart TV, Amazon documents VRR and ALLM as gaming features: VRR syncs a TV’s refresh rate with a compatible gaming device, while ALLM lets that device trigger a low-lag mode. These are not universal streaming frame-rate matching switches. Availability is model-dependent; see Amazon’s Fire TV gaming-feature guidance. The available documentation does not establish a universal current menu path for disabling “Match Original Frame Rate” on Fire TV streaming sticks.

Troubleshoot a black screen, flicker, or continued switching
- Note when it happens. If the change occurs when playback starts or a title changes, inspect the player or app’s matching setting. If it occurs during PC or console use, inspect gaming features such as VRR or Adaptive-Sync on both the source and display.
- Check the exact source. A TV’s built-in app and an HDMI player can behave differently on the same screen. Changing a TV setting may not override a mode request from an external player.
- Check app-level controls. Apps may make their own requests through the platform or expose a playback option. A setting change in one app does not establish that system-wide behavior changed.
- If the screen still blanks, inspect the signal chain. Check the HDMI connection, the selected receiver or soundbar input, and the cable. Amazon includes these checks in its Fire TV blank-screen troubleshooting. A cable issue can cause a blank screen, but replacing a cable is not a fix for a deliberate mode switch.
- Retest one app or title. If motion cadence looks worse with matching disabled, turn the setting back on. Whether fixed output or matched cadence looks preferable depends on the content, display, and viewer.
What to expect after switching it off
Disabling a matching feature can prevent the associated mode changes, but it can also leave video playing at the source’s fixed output cadence rather than matching the content. That does not mean one option is universally smoother or better. Menu availability and behavior depend on the device model, software, display capabilities, app support, and selected output format.
