To check your Windows 11 version and OS build, open Settings > System > About and look under Windows specifications. To see which updates were installed and when, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history. These pages answer different questions: About identifies the release and build currently installed; Update history records update installations.
Which version of Windows am I running?
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Under Windows specifications, find Version.
For another quick view, search for winver from the taskbar and press Enter. Microsoft gives this as an alternate way to open the Windows version dialog: Windows 11, version 26H1 update history.

How do I check the OS build?
On the same Settings > System > About page, find OS build under Windows specifications. The build is a more detailed identifier than the version and is shown in a format such as xxxxx.xxxx. The winver dialog also shows build information. Microsoft explains build numbers and update behavior in Understanding security updates that get installed without a restart.
Where is Windows 11 update history?
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update > Update history.
- Review the listed updates and installation dates. The top Quality Updates entry is a useful place to find a recent monthly update’s KB identifier.
Update history is not the same as the main Windows Update status. A page saying the device is up to date reports its current status; Update history shows which updates were installed and when. Microsoft’s Windows Update: FAQ describes the history page and its update-removal links.

How do I identify a particular update?
- Find the update’s KB number in Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
- Record the Version and OS build from Settings > System > About.
- Open Microsoft’s release-history page for that exact Windows 11 version and compare the KB number and build with its entries.
Check the release notes for your installed version rather than assuming a KB applies to every Windows 11 release. Microsoft says feature-update rollouts are phased and measured on its Windows 11, version 25H2 update history page. On a work- or school-managed PC, IT policies can also affect when an update arrives.
Does Windows 11 version 26H1 apply to every PC?
No. Microsoft says Windows 11 version 26H1 is available only on new devices with select new silicon coming to market starting in early 2026. Existing devices running earlier Windows 11 versions are not offered 26H1 through Windows Update and cannot install it as an in-place update. Check your own Version field in Settings before using a version-specific release-history page. See Microsoft’s 26H1 update history for the stated availability.

What if my PC is on an Insider preview build?
Windows Insider builds are preview builds, not ordinary production releases. Microsoft’s Insider Program and settings guidance explains how to identify and manage preview participation and cautions that preview builds are less stable. Do not assume that a preview build follows the same servicing expectations as a production version.
