If Gemini isn’t showing in Google Maps, first start a route in the Maps app: Google places the Gemini control in navigation, not on the ordinary map screen. If it’s still missing, check platform and regional availability, then troubleshoot voice activation separately. A missing icon does not by itself mean your phone is broken.
Make sure you’re looking in the right place
Google’s instructions for both Android and iPhone/iPad put Gemini in Google Maps’ navigation experience. Open Maps, choose a destination, start navigation, then look for the Gemini icon. The feature is called “Gemini in Google Maps” or “Gemini while you navigate.” Google Maps Help

This is different from opening the standalone Gemini app and asking it to find a place. Gemini Apps can use public Google Maps information for place and direction requests, but that is a separate experience with its own conditions. Gemini Apps Help
Try the on-screen control before diagnosing voice
- Open the Google Maps app on your phone.
- Choose a destination and start turn-by-turn navigation.
- Look for the Gemini icon on the navigation screen and tap it.
- If you want to use voice instead, try “Hey Google” while navigating. Treat this as a separate check: voice activation can fail even when the on-screen control is available, and changing voice settings is not a guaranteed way to make a missing icon appear. Google Maps Help
Check platform and availability
Google announced Gemini driving navigation on November 5, 2025, for Android and iOS wherever Gemini is available. Its January 29, 2026 announcement extended the navigation experience to walking and cycling, also rolling out on Android and iOS wherever Gemini is available. Gemini’s mobile availability depends on factors including country, language, account and device. Google lists Android 9 or later with at least 2 GB of RAM, and iOS 16 or later, among the app requirements; meeting those requirements alone does not establish that every Maps feature is enabled for an account. Check Google’s current Gemini mobile app availability page for your platform and location.
Android: check voice activation and Google app permissions
If “Hey Google” does not respond
Google Maps Help directs Android users to check Hey Google and Voice Match when voice activation is not working. These checks address voice use; they do not establish why an on-screen Gemini icon may be absent. Google Maps Help

Review relevant Google app permissions
Gemini, when used as the Android device assistant, is hosted by the Google app. To inspect its permissions, open the Google app’s App info and choose Permissions. Review permissions relevant to what you want Gemini to do. Location access can matter for location-dependent answers, but Google does not describe granting location permission as a universal fix for a missing Maps control. Google’s Gemini privacy information

Start a route in Google Maps on the iPhone or iPad, then look for the Gemini control there. Google says Gemini is not currently available for CarPlay; if you are checking from a CarPlay display, test from Maps on the phone instead. Google Maps Help

Update the apps, then allow for rollout
- Check the app store for updates to Google Maps and, where applicable, the Gemini app.
- Reopen Maps, start navigation again, and look for the control.
- If your account, region, language, and device appear eligible but Gemini is still missing, it may not have reached your account yet. A Google Maps Help Community product expert wrote on December 12, 2025, that staged releases can take several months to reach eligible users with the latest version. That is a general explanation, not a guaranteed wait or an account-specific activation date. Google Maps Help Community
If it remains absent, use Google Maps’ in-app help or feedback option to report what platform you use and whether you tested during active navigation. Google’s published materials do not give a reliable per-account date for when a staged feature will appear.
