If an Apple TV episode won’t play, check Apple’s service status, your sign-in, connection, stream limits, and app or device updates—in that order. If the download button is missing, first check where you’re using the Apple TV app: downloads aren’t supported on Apple TV hardware, smart TVs, streaming devices, or the web. They’re available only on supported iPhone, iPad, Mac, or PC devices, and only for eligible titles.
Fix an Apple TV episode that won’t play
Try each check in order and retry the episode after making a change. This helps distinguish a service interruption from an account, network, or device problem.

- Check for an outage. Review Apple System Status. If the episode is from a third-party Apple TV channel, check that provider’s service status too. If a service is down, wait and try again later.
- Confirm you’re signed in to the right Apple Account. If you can’t sign in, use Apple’s password-reset or two-factor sign-in support linked from its playback troubleshooting guide.
- Improve the connection. If cellular reception is weak, switch to Wi-Fi. Apple says, “Streaming HD content requires 8 Mbit/s or faster”; this is its published threshold, not a guarantee of smooth playback on every network. Pause other bandwidth-heavy activity and try again.
- Test the same episode on another device using the same connection. If it fails there too, the network or service may be responsible. Apple recommends contacting your internet service provider if this test points to a network problem.
- Check whether too many streams are active. Apple says most Apple TV subscription content supports six simultaneous streams and most Apple TV channels support up to three, with exceptions. An Apple Music student subscription that includes Apple TV access allows one device at a time. Close playback on devices no longer in use; current limits and exceptions are described in Apple’s streaming and download guidance.
- Update the app and device, then restart. On Apple devices, app updates come with device updates. On Windows, update Windows and drivers, then update Apple TV from the Microsoft Store. Compatible smart TVs, streaming devices, and consoles generally update the app automatically. Restart the device after updating.
If the problem persists, compare the episode on another device and connection if possible. On supported smart TVs, streaming devices, gaming consoles, and some cable or satellite services, you can also run Apple’s in-app check: Apple TV app > Settings > Video Troubleshooting > Start. Check whether your device supports downloads
The Apple TV app does not offer downloads on Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, smart TVs, streaming devices, or tv.apple.com. On those platforms, streaming is the supported option. To watch offline, use a supported iPhone, iPad, Mac, or PC and check whether that episode is eligible. Apple lists supported steps and restrictions in its download and streaming guide.

Check whether the episode and account are eligible
Even on a supported device, a channel may not allow downloads. Account-wide simultaneous-download or device limits can also prevent a new download; Apple or the channel may show an alert when a limit is reached. Remove completed downloads from devices on the account to free up room, then try again. A title shown in the Apple TV app may come from a third-party channel, rental, or purchase rather than the Apple TV subscription, so availability and download rules depend on the specific source.
Start a download and find it in your library
- Open the episode in the Apple TV app on a supported device and select Download if the option is available.
- For a series, choose the season, then download the whole season or individual episodes if offered.
- Find finished downloads under Library > Downloaded.
What can interrupt or slow a download?
On iPhone or iPad, review Settings > Apps > TV. Cellular restrictions can prevent downloading over mobile data. High Quality uses more data and takes longer than Fast Downloads; adding audio languages increases the file size. The available options vary by device. Automatic Downloads can fetch the next two episodes of shows you start in Continue Watching and automatically remove them after viewing. If storage or data use is a concern, review this setting alongside your quality and cellular choices.

How long do Apple TV downloads last?
There is no single expiry rule for every episode. Apple says most Apple TV channel downloads are available for up to 30 days, though some expire sooner. For some Apple TV subscription titles, a download expires 48 hours after playback starts or 30 days after it was downloaded, whichever comes first. Check the specific title and service terms; channel and title restrictions vary. These limits are documented in Apple’s download guidance.
