1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Gboard no longer capitalizes the first letter of a sentence, check Auto-capitalization first. On Android, open Gboard Settings, choose Text correction, and enable Auto-capitalization. Then test in another text field. If the setting is already enabled, restart the phone, update Gboard, force-stop the app, and clear its cache before considering a data reset or reinstall. iPhone and iPad troubleshooting is different: Google’s documented steps focus on selecting Gboard again or removing and re-adding it, not on an Android-style capitalization switch.
What the symptom usually means
Capitalization is controlled by Gboard’s correction settings, the keyboard app’s current state, and sometimes the text field in which you are typing. There is no single cause that Google identifies for every capitalization failure. A setting may have been changed, an update may have left the app in a bad state, or the behavior may be limited to one app.

Start with the least disruptive check for your platform. Do not clear storage or reinstall until the setting, restart, update, and cache steps have been tried. Those later actions can remove preferences or temporarily leave you without your usual keyboard.
First describe the symptom precisely. “Gboard does not capitalize after a period,” “only the first word in a new field stays lowercase,” and “capitalization fails only during swipe typing” are different observations. Try both tapping individual keys and glide typing, and test a sentence that starts in a new field as well as one that follows a period and a space. This gives you a useful baseline before changing settings.

Android: restore automatic capitals in order
1. Check Auto-capitalization in Gboard
- Open any app with a text field, such as a message or notes app, so Gboard appears.
- Touch and hold the comma key, then move your finger to the Settings icon. On some versions you can also open Gboard’s toolbar and tap the gear.
- Tap Text correction.
- Find Auto-capitalization. If it is off, turn it on.
- Return to the text field and type a new sentence, including a space after a period, to test the result.
Google documents Auto-capitalization under Text correction in its Android troubleshooting guidance (Google Gboard Help). Labels and the route to Gboard Settings can differ by Android release and phone manufacturer. If you deliberately want lowercase text, the same switch can be disabled; for missing capitals, verify that it is enabled before changing anything else.
Do not confuse the keyboard’s capitalization setting with a phone-wide display or accessibility option. The relevant control is inside Gboard’s own Text correction menu. If you use more than one language, confirm that Gboard is the active keyboard and that you are testing the same language layout each time; otherwise you may be comparing different keyboard configurations.
2. Test whether the problem is limited to one app
Type the same short sentence in a second ordinary text-entry app. If capitals work there but not in the original app, the evidence points to that text field or app rather than a keyboard-wide failure. Update or restart the affected app and check whether it has its own text-formatting option. The available Google guidance does not establish a universal compatibility rule, so treat this comparison as a diagnostic, not a confirmed cause.

Avoid testing in a password field, search field with special behavior, or editor that intentionally suppresses formatting. A normal notes or messaging field gives you a cleaner comparison. If only one field fails, capture its app name and version for the developer rather than immediately resetting all of Gboard.
3. Restart the phone and update Gboard
Restart Android, then open Google Play, search for Gboard, and install any available update. Google lists both actions before app-recovery steps. They are low-disruption checks, but neither is guaranteed to restore capitalization on every device.
After the restart, test before changing another setting. If an update is available, allow it to finish over a reliable connection, reopen the same text field, and run the same sentence test. A restart reloads the keyboard and system processes; an update replaces the installed build. Neither action should be described as a guaranteed fix, but both are safer first moves than deleting app data.
4. Force-stop Gboard
- Open Android Settings.
- Tap Apps (the label may be Apps & notifications or similar).
- Select Gboard. If it is not visible, use the app-list search.
- Tap Force stop and confirm.
- Open a text field again and test capitalization.
This closes the keyboard process and lets Android start it fresh. It does not intentionally erase your dictionary or preferences. If you cannot find Gboard, use the system app search rather than assuming it is absent; manufacturers place the app list in different locations. Do not repeatedly force-stop while another keyboard is active and mistake the temporary absence of Gboard for a capitalization result.

5. Clear Gboard’s cache
- From the Gboard app-information screen, tap Storage or Storage & cache.
- Choose Clear cache.
- Reopen a text field and type several sentences.
Android menu names vary by manufacturer and version. Clearing cache removes temporary files, not the complete Gboard configuration, so it is less disruptive than clearing storage. Allow the keyboard a moment to load again, then repeat the same test in the original field and in a second app. If the problem remains unchanged, continue in order rather than clearing storage immediately.
6. Clear data or storage only when earlier steps fail
On the same storage screen, Android may offer Clear storage or Clear data. Google says this resets Gboard to its default state (Google Gboard Help). Expect to restore preferences such as theme, toolbar arrangement, learned words, and other custom settings afterward. Because this reset is broader and less reversible than clearing cache, use it only after checking Auto-capitalization, restarting, updating, force-stopping, and clearing cache.
Before tapping the reset button, note any settings you want to reproduce. A data reset is not the same as clearing a temporary cache: it returns the app to its default configuration. Afterward, open Gboard Settings, enable Auto-capitalization, restore your preferred layout and toolbar options, and test before spending time rebuilding personal customizations. If capitalization still fails in every ordinary text field after a reset, record that result for further support instead of performing repeated resets.
7. Reinstall Gboard as a final Android option
Uninstalling and reinstalling can replace damaged application files. Before uninstalling, make sure another keyboard is installed and enabled if Gboard is your only keyboard. Google specifically warns Android users to install a secondary keyboard first in that situation (Google Gboard Help).
- Open Google Play and locate Gboard.
- Uninstall it, or use the available option to uninstall updates if the problem began immediately after an update and your device exposes that option.
- Restart if Android requests it.
- Install or update Gboard again, enable it in the keyboard settings, and test.
Uninstall-update controls are not identical on every Android build. If the keyboard is bundled with the phone, you may be able to remove updates rather than remove the entire app. Reinstalling is more disruptive than a setting change or cache clear: you must select Gboard again, review its permissions and preferences as presented by your device, and possibly restore a layout or learned-word configuration. Keep the backup keyboard available until Gboard is installed, enabled, and tested.
If the problem started immediately after a Gboard update, removing updates is a distinct troubleshooting choice from clearing data. Use it only when Android exposes that control and only after noting your current version. A rollback may change behavior, so test capitalization and other typing functions afterward.
iPhone and iPad: use the iOS recovery path
Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions do not document an Android-style Text correction > Auto-capitalization switch. Do not assume the Android menu exists in iOS Gboard. The supported checks concern which keyboard is selected and whether Gboard is correctly registered in the iOS keyboard list.

Select Gboard when the keyboard has switched away
When another keyboard is showing, touch and hold the globe key, then choose Gboard. This is the documented way to switch back when Gboard is installed but not currently selected (Google Gboard Help for iPhone and iPad).
Test in a normal text field after switching. If capitalization returns, the issue was keyboard selection rather than a need to alter Android-style correction settings. If the globe menu does not list Gboard, continue to the keyboard-list steps instead of repeatedly switching between available keyboards.
Remove and add Gboard again
- Open iOS Settings.
- Go to General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
- If Gboard appears as “null” or is not functioning correctly, remove it from the list.
- Tap Add New Keyboard and select Gboard.
- Open a text field, switch to Gboard with the globe key, and test.
Google’s iOS setup guidance also places keyboard options inside the Gboard app under Keyboard settings (Google Gboard Help). The retrieved iOS help does not promise that re-adding Gboard will fix every capitalization symptom; it restores the keyboard’s registration and selection when those are the problem. Do not present the Android cache, data-reset, or uninstall-update sequence as an iPhone fix unless Apple or Google provides a separate iOS instruction for the specific symptom.
Choose the least disruptive fix
| Action | Platform | What it changes | Disruption and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Check Auto-capitalization | Android | Changes one Gboard correction preference | Minimal; can be switched back immediately |
| Restart device | Android | Reloads system and keyboard processes | Minimal; no intentional data loss |
| Update Gboard | Android | Installs the current Play Store build | Low disruption; behavior may change with the new build |
| Force stop | Android | Ends the running Gboard process | Low disruption; Android starts it again when needed |
| Clear cache | Android | Deletes temporary files | Low disruption; preferences normally remain |
| Clear data/storage | Android | Resets Gboard to default state | High disruption; restore preferences and learned customization |
| Reinstall or remove updates | Android | Replaces the app or rolls back available updates | Most disruptive; install a backup keyboard first if needed |
| Switch from globe menu | iPhone/iPad | Selects Gboard as the active keyboard | Minimal; reversible by selecting another keyboard |
| Remove and re-add keyboard | iPhone/iPad | Refreshes Gboard’s entry in the iOS keyboard list | Moderate; requires adding Gboard again |
The order matters because it balances information gained against disruption. A setting check tells you whether the feature is disabled. A restart or update tests a low-risk software-state problem. Force-stop and cache clearing refresh the app without deliberately resetting preferences. Data clearing and reinstalling can help with deeper app-state or file problems, but they also create more work and may remove customization.
When capitalization works only sometimes
After a period or at the start of a line
Test a complete sentence rather than a single isolated word. Auto-capitalization generally reacts to sentence boundaries, so type a period, a space, and a new word. Also test at the beginning of a fresh text field. If the switch is enabled but neither location produces capitals, continue with the restart and app-recovery sequence.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do not judge the result from a word in the middle of an existing sentence. Start with a clean field, type a short sentence, and repeat it in a second app. This separates a sentence-boundary observation from a keyboard-wide failure. If one app consistently behaves differently, preserve that distinction in your notes.
Only while using swipe typing
Separate ordinary taps from glide or swipe typing. If tapping produces capitals but swiping does not, record that narrower symptom and test after restarting and updating. A Google Android Community post uses the wording “Gboard incorrectly capitalizing first letter when I tell it not to (swipe typing)” (Google Android Community, April 20, 2026). That is one user’s description of unwanted capitalization, not evidence that swipe typing causes a widespread defect or that it explains missing capitals on your device.

That example also illustrates why the direction of the symptom matters: unwanted capitals are not the same as missing capitals. Do not treat a community title as a confirmed diagnosis. Record whether the failure occurs with taps, swipes, or both, then apply the general Android sequence.
Only the letter “I” or particular words
Check whether the issue is actually automatic correction of a word rather than sentence capitalization. Compare a sentence beginning with several different words in two apps. Community titles such as “Keyboard doesn’t capitalize ‘I’” describe symptoms users report; they are not authoritative diagnoses. Avoid changing multiple settings at once, or you will not know which change affected the result.
If only one word or letter is affected, write down examples exactly as they appear, including whether the word was entered by tapping or swiping. A narrow pattern may point to correction behavior rather than the general Auto-capitalization switch, but the documented troubleshooting steps do not establish a universal root cause. Keep the test controlled and change one thing at a time.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the keyboard disappears after recovery
- On Android, return to the system keyboard settings and confirm Gboard is enabled and selected. If you uninstalled it, use the secondary keyboard to download it again.
- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards and verify that Gboard is listed, then select it with the globe key while typing.
- If a reset removed personal words or layout preferences, reapply them after confirming that capitalization itself works.
This check is especially important after reinstalling or removing updates. A keyboard can be installed but not selected, or listed but not active in the current text field. Confirm availability and selection before concluding that capitalization is still broken.
What to record before seeking further help
Note the phone or tablet model, operating-system version, Gboard version, whether Auto-capitalization is enabled, and the exact app or text field where the failure occurs. Record whether tapping and swipe typing behave differently and which recovery step changed the result. These details distinguish a setting problem from an app-specific symptom without assuming a cause that has not been established.
Also record whether the keyboard was selected normally, whether the symptom began after an update, and whether clearing cache or data changed anything. Include a short reproducible sequence, such as “open a notes field, type a period and a space, then type the next word.” Avoid including private message content; the behavior and steps are usually enough for support to understand the problem.
Quick decision path
- Android: verify Text correction > Auto-capitalization.
- Test a second text-entry app.
- Restart the device and update Gboard.
- Force-stop Gboard, then clear its cache.
- Only if necessary, clear data/storage and restore preferences.
- As a last resort, install a secondary keyboard and reinstall Gboard or remove its updates where Android permits.
- iPhone/iPad: select Gboard from the globe menu; if it is missing or shown as “null,” remove and re-add it in the iOS keyboard list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Gboard stop capitalizing on Android?
The first check is Gboard’s Text correction > Auto-capitalization setting. If it is enabled, the symptom may reflect a temporary app state, an outdated build, or behavior limited to one text field. Restart, update, force-stop, and clear cache in that order before resetting data.
Best Value
Will clearing Gboard cache delete my learned words?
Clearing cache removes temporary files and is less disruptive than clearing storage. Google says clearing Gboard data or storage resets the app to its default state, so use the cache option first and expect to restore preferences after a data reset.
Is there an Auto-capitalization switch on iPhone Gboard?
Google’s iPhone and iPad troubleshooting instructions do not document the Android-style switch. On iOS, select Gboard from the globe menu, or remove and re-add it under Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards when it is missing or shown as “null.”
Should I reinstall Gboard immediately?
No. Reinstalling is a later option because it is more disruptive and can leave you without a keyboard temporarily. If Gboard is your only Android keyboard, Google advises installing and enabling a secondary keyboard before uninstalling or removing updates.

What if capitals work in Notes but not in one app?
That comparison suggests the symptom may be limited to the original app or text field. Restart or update that app, check for its own formatting behavior, and report the exact field and reproducible steps rather than assuming all of Gboard is failing.
Why does Gboard capitalize when I swipe but not when I tap, or the reverse?
Treat the input method as part of the symptom. Test tapping and swipe typing separately, note which one fails, then restart and update Gboard. A community post describing unwanted capitalization during swipe typing is one user report, not proof of a widespread cause.
What does clearing Gboard data change?
Google says clearing data or storage resets Gboard to its default state. You may need to restore the theme, toolbar arrangement, learned words, layout, and other preferences, so do it only after less disruptive steps fail.
The Bottom Line
On Android, begin with Gboard Settings > Text correction > Auto-capitalization, then test another app, restart and update, force-stop, and clear cache. Reserve data clearing and reinstalling for the end, and keep a secondary keyboard available before uninstalling. On iPhone and iPad, use the globe menu to select Gboard or remove and re-add it in the iOS keyboard list; Google does not document the Android capitalization path for iOS.
