Laboratory studies report capture of particular dyes, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals and antibiotics, but results are selective. A filter made from raw grain is not equivalent to one made from modified cellulose, biochar or activated carbon, and no study establishes a spent-grain filter as a certified universal household drinking-water treatment.
What “spent-grain filter” means
Brewer’s spent grain is the wet solid residue left after mashing malt and other brewing grains. In water-treatment experiments, the phrase can describe several substantially different sorbents:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Raw or minimally processed BSG: the grain solids are washed, dried and milled. Their cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, proteins and other surface groups provide sites where some contaminants can attach.
- Modified cellulose: researchers isolate or process the fiber fraction to increase accessible binding sites. A 2022 study used a cellulose adsorbent made from spent-grain processing waste; its capacities cannot be compared directly with raw-grain results.
- Biochar: heating BSG without complete combustion creates a porous carbon material. The treatment changes surface area, pore structure and chemistry.
- Activated carbon: additional activation creates still more porosity and can alter the balance of hydrophobic, electrostatic and chemical interactions.
Preparation determines what the material can do. A result measured with a high-temperature activated carbon should not be presented as the performance of untreated brewery residue. Always identify the sorbent, not just the phrase “spent grain.”

Adsorption is retention at a solid’s surface, rather than destruction of the contaminant. Water flows past the grain or carbon, and a dissolved species can remain in the pores or interact with chemical groups on the surface. Several mechanisms may operate together:

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Electrostatic attraction: an oppositely charged surface and pollutant draw together.
- Ion exchange: a contaminant ion replaces another ion associated with a surface group.
- Hydrogen bonding and electron donor/acceptor interactions: polar groups on the sorbent and pollutant form non-covalent interactions.
- π interactions: aromatic portions of a molecule interact with aromatic or electron-rich regions of the surface.
- Pore filling and hydrophobic partitioning: especially important in carbonized materials with developed micropores and mesopores.
- Surface complexation or precipitation: a metal can form a stronger chemical association, or a poorly soluble compound can form at the surface.
Because these mechanisms depend on both substances, adsorption is not a general-purpose sieve. A change in pH can reverse a surface charge, alter a pollutant’s ionization state or make a competing ion more attractive. Contact time, sorbent dose, temperature, particle size and water flow also affect how much is captured.
What raw spent grain has captured in studies
Dyes
Dyes are among the most frequently tested contaminants because they are easy to measure and represent colored industrial wastewater. A 2026 study of minimally processed BSG reported a maximum adsorption capacity of 30.62 mg/g for the cationic dye Safranin T and 1.36 mg/g for the anionic dye Congo Red. In that study, the surface was negatively charged at pH 6.8, so electrostatic attraction was interpreted as the main reason Safranin T was retained. Congo Red was captured more weakly, with localized π interactions and hydrogen bonding proposed as contributors. These are capacities from that experiment, not specifications for every grain-based filter. The 2026 study and its conditions are reported by Souza Junior and colleagues.
Another investigation examined methylene blue, a cationic dye, and tartrazine, an anionic dye. The best experimental pH was reported as 11 for methylene blue and 2 for tartrazine; equilibrium was reached at about 240 minutes and 300 minutes, respectively. The authors discussed electrostatic effects, electron donor/acceptor interactions, hydrogen bonding, π interactions and dye aggregation. Such different optimum pH values demonstrate why a cartridge cannot be assumed to remove every dye equally. The mechanisms and times are described in the 2020 biosorption study.

Heavy metals
BSG can sorb selected dissolved metal ions through ion exchange and binding to oxygen- or nitrogen-containing groups. A 2019 study reported the affinity sequence Mn≈Zn<Ni<Cd<Cu<Pb under its test conditions. Other cations restricted sorption, showing that a metal’s result in a single-solute solution may overstate performance in mixed water. After 16 sorption–desorption cycles, the study reported loss of functional-group sorption capacity. Wierzba and Kłos describe the ion-exchange behavior and cycle-related loss.
A 2026 fixed-bed study using model waters examined nickel, cadmium and lead; lead showed the highest affinity in the reported tests. The authors proposed that poorly soluble lead phytate formed through surface complexation. That is a proposed mechanism for those experiments, not settled proof that every BSG bed immobilizes lead in the same way. The study record is available from the Technical University of Munich research portal.
Why modified cellulose gives different numbers
The 2022 cellulose adsorbent made from spent-grain processing waste reported maximum capacities of 272.5 mg/g for lead and 52.9 mg/g for manganese. Those values describe a processed fiber material under the study’s dose, concentration, pH and contact conditions. Other metal ions in tap water reduced adsorption. They should not be lined up against the 30.62 mg/g Safranin T result as if one material were universally “better”: the sorbent, pollutant, water chemistry and test design are all different. The cellulose preparation and metal results are published in Food and Bioproducts Processing.

Pharmaceuticals and antibiotics
Carbonized spent grain has also been tested against drug residues. A 2020 study produced biochars and activated carbons from brewery spent grain and applied them to carbamazepine. These are derived carbon adsorbents, not raw wet grain packed into a kitchen filter. The carbamazepine work is indexed by PubMed.

A 2025 fixed-bed study used a spent-grain-derived biochar for sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim and ciprofloxacin in batch and column experiments. Adsorption was stronger in buffered distilled water than in wastewater and mixed-antibiotic solutions. Dissolved organic matter and competing compounds occupied or blocked sites, reducing uptake. One part of the work found microwave regeneration improved trimethoprim adsorption over successive cycles, but that regeneration result applies to the tested biochar and procedure, not to raw grain or every antibiotic. The matrix, fixed-bed and regeneration findings are reported in the 2025 Journal of Water Process Engineering article.

Why a filter can work in the lab and perform differently in water
pH changes charge and ionization
At a given pH, surface groups can be protonated, deprotonated or neutral. The same change affects dyes, medicines and metal speciation. That is why the dye study found opposite preferred pH values for methylene blue and tartrazine. A cartridge that has not been tested across the source water’s pH range has an unknown removal margin.
Competing ions and dissolved organic matter consume sites
Real tap water, wastewater and industrial effluent contain many dissolved substances. Cations can compete with one another for exchange sites; organic matter can coat a surface or occupy pores. The cellulose study observed interference from other tap-water metal ions, and the antibiotic-biochar study found weaker adsorption in wastewater than in buffered distilled water. Single-contaminant tests therefore do not predict mixed-water performance by themselves.

Contact time and dose control removal
In a batch vessel, the water may remain in contact with the sorbent for hours. A household cartridge uses continuous flow, so water has only the contact time provided by the bed. More media generally provides more sites, while finer particles can increase surface access but also increase pressure drop and clogging risk. Capacity is normally quoted per gram of sorbent under a defined test, not as a guaranteed number of liters for an arbitrary filter.
Flow and bed depth determine breakthrough
In a fixed bed, the inlet section loads first. A mass-transfer zone then moves through the column until contaminant appears at the outlet; this point is called breakthrough. Higher flow, higher influent concentration and a shallower bed hastened breakthrough in the 2019 dye-column work. A clear outlet is not proof that the bed still has reserve capacity, and a spent bed can release a contaminant if conditions change.

Adsorption transfers pollution to a solid; it does not make the pollutant disappear. Regeneration can desorb some compounds, but the wash or heating step creates a concentrated waste stream that requires appropriate handling. Performance may decline because binding sites are altered, pores are blocked or the sorbent is physically lost.

The 2019 metal study reported functional-group capacity loss after 16 sorption–desorption cycles. The 2025 antibiotic-biochar work reported an improvement for trimethoprim after microwave regeneration over cycles. These findings cannot be combined into a universal replacement interval: they use different materials, contaminants and regeneration methods. No standard household service life is established for spent-grain media.

Can a spent-grain filter make water safe to drink?
Current evidence does not support that conclusion. The studies show removal of selected chemical pollutants under specified laboratory or model-water conditions. They do not establish reliable removal of pathogens, viruses, parasites, every pesticide or all dissolved chemicals. They also do not provide consumer certification or a validated finished-water safety claim.
For drinking water, use a treatment method certified for the specific contaminant and maintain it according to its documented replacement schedule. Treat an experimental BSG column as a research sorbent unless independent testing demonstrates influent and effluent concentrations, microbial safety, pressure behavior, leaching and end-of-life performance for the actual water source.
How to evaluate a claim about a spent-grain filter
- Identify the material: ask whether it is raw BSG, modified cellulose, biochar or activated carbon, and how it was prepared.
- Name the target pollutant: “removes chemicals” is not a meaningful specification. Look for the exact dye, metal, pharmaceutical or antibiotic and its starting concentration.
- Check the water matrix: distinguish ultrapure or buffered water from tap water, brackish water, wastewater or a multicomponent model solution.
- Check pH and competing solutes: a capacity measured at one pH may not apply after the source water changes.
- Check operating mode: batch contact-time results do not equal fixed-bed flow performance. For columns, look for flow rate, bed depth, empty-bed contact time and breakthrough data.
- Check regeneration evidence: note the method, number of cycles and whether the pollutant or its by-products appear in the regeneration waste.
- Look for outlet testing: a capacity in milligrams per gram is not a safe liters-treated claim without concentration, dose and breakthrough measurements.
What the evidence supports
Spent grain is a promising feedstock for sorbents because its organic functional groups and, after carbonization, its porous structure can bind selected contaminants. The strongest interpretation is pollutant-specific: particular BSG-based materials have captured particular dyes, metal ions and drug compounds in controlled tests. The weakest interpretation is that any grain-filled filter will purify arbitrary water. Material preparation, pollutant chemistry, pH, competing substances, contact time, flow and regeneration decide the result.
