In EA SPORTS FC 26, create a tactic in My Tactics by choosing a formation, build-up style, defensive approach, player roles and focuses. Save a tactic code as your baseline, then test one change at a time in the same mode, gameplay preset, squad and difficulty so you can tell whether the change produces the behavior you wanted.
What a custom tactic changes in FC 26
A formation is your team’s starting shape, not a guarantee that every player will occupy one fixed spot throughout a match. In FC 26, roles and focuses influence how players interpret that shape in possession, during transitions and while defending. EA says players are less constrained by roles than in earlier versions and can make more flexible attacking movements. That flexibility creates more room for experimentation, but a role remains an instruction rather than a promise that a particular run will happen on every possession.

FC 26 also reduces the penalty for being out of position and adds a Versatile focus for some roles. These changes make hybrid ideas more viable, yet every instruction still has a cost. A midfielder told to attack may leave space during the next transition; a fullback moving inside can improve central support while reducing immediate width; and a defender covering wide areas may no longer be in the best position to protect the penalty area.
“Our focus this year can be summed up in 3 words: make gameplay better.”

Choose the test context before touching a setting
A tactic that feels effective in one environment can behave differently in another. Decide where you intend to use it and keep that context fixed while testing.
| Context | What to hold constant | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Ultimate Team or Clubs head-to-head | Competitive gameplay preset, squad, formation and opponent level | Competitive is tuned for these head-to-head modes, with faster passing and more direct control. |
| Career Mode | Authentic gameplay preset, team, difficulty and match settings | Authentic is intended to provide a more true-to-football experience in modes such as Career. |
| Kick-Off, Seasons or Friendlies | The selected mode and preset, plus the same team and opponent conditions | The same tactic code can load in these modes, but match context still affects what you observe. |
Do not treat a result in Competitive as proof that the same settings are optimal in Authentic, or vice versa. State the intended mode and preset whenever you save a tactic or compare two versions.
Build a tactic in My Tactics
1. Start with the defensive shape you can actually protect
Open My Tactics and select a formation that fits your available positions and the defensive shape you want after losing the ball. Ask where your team should have numbers when possession changes: centrally, in the half-spaces or near the touchlines. A formation with two central midfielders will create different recovery options from one with a single pivot, even before roles are assigned.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the players you expect to field, not an idealized lineup. A role that looks balanced on paper may expose a weakness if the replacement player lacks the attributes or familiarity needed for it. Formation is the base from which all later instructions operate.
2. Set build-up style and defensive approach
Choose the build-up style that describes how you want the first pass and supporting movements to develop. Then select a defensive approach that defines how aggressively the team tries to regain the ball and how much space it accepts behind the first line.
Make these two settings before fine-tuning individual roles. They establish the collective behavior that roles must support. For example, an aggressive defensive approach needs a recovery plan for the space left when the first press is bypassed; a more conservative approach needs enough forward support that every attack does not become an isolated counter.

3. Assign roles and focuses to solve a specific problem
Open each position’s role options and choose the instruction that addresses the behavior you want to see. Use the focus to refine that instruction where available. Because FC 26 allows more flexible movement, judge a role by the situations it is designed to create, not by expecting a player to stand on one marked location.

It can help a back three defend the flank without permanently moving a traditional fullback into the line.
- Inverted Wingback: a fullback who moves into central positions while the team has the ball. This can add a central passing option, but it may reduce immediate width and require another player to cover the flank.
- Box Crasher: a defensive midfielder instructed to make forward runs. EA notes that this role is not focused on defensive actions and is slow to return to defensive duties, so the rest of the midfield must cover the space left behind.
- Ball-Playing Keeper: a goalkeeper used as a passing option during build-up who stays on the line when defending. This can support circulation from the back without instructing the goalkeeper to defend far from goal.
- Versatile focus: where offered, this makes a role less restrictive. It is useful when you want a player to retain the role’s basic purpose while taking more situational decisions.
Assign roles in relation to one another. An Inverted Wingback is easier to support when a winger or wide midfielder can hold the flank; a Box Crasher needs a partner who can protect the central lane; and a Ball-Playing Keeper requires defenders who offer safe angles when the opponent presses.
4. Use a Tactical Suggestion as a starting point, not a verdict
FC 26 Tactical Suggestions adapt to your existing formation and are intended to suit your team. That makes a suggestion a convenient baseline when you are unsure where to begin: it can populate compatible settings without replacing the formation you selected. It does not prove that the resulting tactic is best for your squad, your opponent or your preferred style. Inspect every suggested role and focus before accepting it.
5. Save a code before experimenting
On the My Tactics screen, use the option to Save Code to preserve the version you are about to test. Give your own record a meaningful name outside the game, such as “4-2-3-1 Authentic baseline,” and note the mode and preset. If a change makes the team worse, you can restore the exact baseline instead of trying to remember every setting.
Career Mode Tactical Vision requirements are separate
Career Mode has an additional Tactical Vision system. Its requirements apply to the named vision, not to every tactic you create in every mode. EA’s FC 26 Career Mode guidance lists the following combinations:
Recommended Free Tools
| Tactical Vision | Required build-up setting | Required defensive setting |
|---|---|---|
| Possession | Close Support | Not stated as a required pairing |
| Wing Play | Balanced or Counter | Not stated as a required pairing |
| Counter Attack | Counter | Not stated as a required pairing |
| Park the Bus | Deep | Not stated as a required pairing |
| Kick & Rush | Balanced | Not stated as a required pairing |
| High Pressing | High or Aggressive | Not stated as a required pairing |
EA says no Tactical Vision requires both a build-up style and a defensive approach. Player roles are no longer requirements for these visions, although a familiar head coach can still improve a player’s role familiarity. Therefore, do not change a role merely to satisfy a Career Mode vision when the listed requirement concerns only the build-up or defensive setting.

Save, load and convert tactic codes
FC 26 codes include the line-height setting and can be saved or loaded. EA says they work across Ultimate Team, Career Mode, Kick-Off, Seasons and Friendlies. FC 25 tactic codes are accepted in FC 26 and converted when applied; conversion does not establish that every menu, role or gameplay behavior is identical between the two versions.
- On My Tactics, choose the option to manage or save a tactic code and select Save Code.
- Record the code together with the formation, mode, gameplay preset and the reason you created it.
- To restore a saved version, return to the code-management area, choose Use Code, then select Load Saved Code.
- Review the loaded roles, focuses, line height and team settings before entering a match.
Button symbols shown in EA’s instructions vary by platform. Use the labels displayed in your current FC 26 interface rather than assuming that a PlayStation, Xbox or keyboard command is universal.
A practical, controlled way to test a custom tactic
EA’s official materials describe the systems and expected behavior, but they do not publish a validated testing protocol, performance threshold or independently measured win-rate effect. The following method is a practical comparison procedure, not an EA-certified formula.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStep 1: Define one observable objective
Write down the behavior you want to change in plain language. Examples include “give the striker a short passing option,” “protect the space behind the left fullback” or “arrive with a second player in the box.” Avoid goals such as “make the tactic better,” which cannot tell you what to watch for.
Step 2: Save the baseline
Save the current tactic code and note the exact formation, build-up style, defensive approach, roles, focuses and line height. If you are testing a Tactical Suggestion, save the suggested version before editing it.
Step 3: Fix the environment
- Use the same game mode and gameplay preset throughout the comparison.
- Keep the starting XI, substitutes and formation unchanged.
- Use the same difficulty and comparable opponent conditions where the mode allows it.
- Keep the match settings and controller setup consistent.
These controls do not remove normal match variation, but they prevent a change of mode, squad or preset from being mistaken for a tactical improvement.

Step 4: Change one meaningful variable
Change one role, focus or team setting that directly addresses your objective. Do not simultaneously alter the formation, defensive approach and three player roles. If several settings change at once, you cannot identify which one produced the new behavior.
Step 5: Play several comparable matches
Look for repeated patterns rather than a single spectacular goal or mistake. Observe whether the intended passing outlet appears, whether the targeted space remains exposed, whether support arrives during transitions and whether players recover into the intended shape. Record what happened and the game situation in which it happened.
Step 6: Compare against the baseline
Load the original code and repeat the same observation process. Compare the two versions using the objective you defined, not a general impression of which match felt more enjoyable. The available official sources provide no numeric threshold for success, so do not invent a required win rate, possession percentage or number of goals.
Step 7: Keep or revert deliberately
Keep the change when the desired behavior appears more consistently without creating an unacceptable trade-off elsewhere. Revert to the saved code when the new instruction solves one problem but repeatedly creates a larger one. Then test a different single variable.

| Mode and preset | Are both versions being tested in Competitive or both in Authentic? |
| Defensive shape | Where are the spare defenders and the first recovery lanes when possession is lost? |
| Build-up setting | Does the first phase create the passing angles your players can use? |
| Defensive setting | Does the pressure level match your ability to cover the space behind it? |
| Role and focus fit | Do the instructions match the players available, or are they asking a player to cover a weakness they cannot cover? |
| Target behavior | Which version more reliably creates the specific outlet, run or defensive protection you wanted? |
These are practical comparison axes inferred from FC 26’s documented settings and mode differences, not an official EA ranking system.

Common trade-offs and troubleshooting
The attack has no width
If an Inverted Wingback is moving inside and the winger is also narrowing, the team may lose a reliable outlet on the flank. Restore width with a suitable wide role or focus, or use a different fullback instruction. Test the change while watching the first two passing options after a regain.
The midfield is exposed after losing the ball
A Box Crasher can improve forward arrivals but is slow to return and is not focused on defensive actions. Pair the role with a midfielder who protects the central lane, or revert the Box Crasher if the opponent repeatedly attacks the vacated space.
Build-up ends in rushed passes
Check whether the selected build-up style, goalkeeper behavior and defender roles provide a safe short option. A Ball-Playing Keeper can offer an additional passing outlet while remaining on the line when defending, but the defenders must still create clear angles rather than standing on the same vertical lane.
The press is bypassed too easily
Increasing the defensive approach is not a complete solution if the team cannot recover behind the first pressure. Examine the distance between midfield and defense, the roles assigned to cover wide areas and the space left by forward-running players. A less aggressive setting may produce a more stable shape for the squad you are using.
The tactic works in one mode but not another
First verify the gameplay preset. Competitive and Authentic are designed for different experiences, so identical settings should not be expected to feel identical. Re-test the tactic in the mode for which it is intended instead of transferring a conclusion from Career to head-to-head play.
A converted FC 25 code looks different
FC 25 codes can be converted in FC 26, but conversion is not evidence that every role, screen or behavior is unchanged. Inspect the imported formation, line height, roles and focuses, then save a new FC 26 code before testing.
Version limits and what the official guidance does not establish
The instructions above are for FC 26. Features such as the named roles, Versatile focus, reduced out-of-position penalty, line-height codes and formation-preserving Tactical Suggestions should not be silently treated as features of earlier EA SPORTS FC releases.

Quick build-and-test checklist
- Choose the mode and gameplay preset you actually intend to play.
- Select a formation that supports your desired defensive shape and available positions.
- Set build-up style and defensive approach before assigning individual roles.
- Use roles and focuses to solve one clearly defined tactical problem.
- Check the trade-off of Wide Back, Inverted Wingback, Box Crasher and Ball-Playing Keeper instructions.
- In Career Mode, satisfy the Tactical Vision setting requirements without treating roles as mandatory requirements.
- Save a baseline code, including its mode, preset and line height.
- Change one variable at a time and play several comparable matches.
- Record repeated, observable behaviors rather than relying on one result.
- Keep or revert the change only after comparing it with the saved baseline.
The most dependable custom tactic is not the one with the most aggressive instructions; it is the one whose intended behavior you can observe repeatedly with your players, in the mode and preset where you plan to use it.
