Foldable phones can become thinner while gaining battery capacity because engineers redesign the whole device, not just the battery compartment. Denser internal layouts, slimmer hinges and display structures, lighter components and higher-energy-density battery materials can free space or weight for a larger cell. That does not mean every thinner foldable has a bigger battery—or that more mAh automatically means longer battery life.
How can a foldable phone fit a larger battery?
A foldable has to package two display halves, a hinge, supporting structures, electronics, thermal components and its battery into one enclosure. Changing one part affects the space and weight available to the others. Samsung describes the work as a coordinated redesign of the display, hinge, battery, thermal system and internal architecture, rather than a simple swap to a larger battery (Samsung’s Fold7 engineering account; Samsung’s Fold8 Ultra engineering account).

Reclaiming room through packaging
Internal layout can reduce wasted volume. Samsung says its ultra-high-density circuit-board layout helps make more efficient use of the device interior. It also describes a thinner hinge and a restructured display as ways to reduce the space and material devoted to those assemblies. Those gains can be used to make the phone thinner, to accommodate a larger battery, or to balance both goals.
Saving weight across the device
Battery capacity is only one part of a phone’s total mass. If engineers reduce weight in the hinge, display supports or other components, some of that allowance can go toward a larger battery without increasing the phone’s overall weight. Samsung says the Fold8 Ultra’s larger battery added about 6 g, while its engineers sought weight savings elsewhere in the device.

Increasing energy density
Energy density describes how much energy a battery material can store for a given amount of space or weight. Samsung says it used a silicon-carbon anode to improve energy density, alongside system-level work to maintain stability. HONOR attributes the Magic V6 battery to fifth-generation silicon-carbon material. These approaches can help store more energy in a given package, but the chemistry is only one element of a phone’s design.
What do recent foldable examples show?
The figures below are manufacturer-reported specifications or comparisons, not independently verified measurements. They illustrate different approaches and should not be treated as a like-for-like endurance ranking.

Is a demonstration battery the one installed in a phone?
No. HONOR separately described a blade-battery demonstration with 32% silicon content and energy density above 900 Wh/L as technology intended to enable future foldables in the 7,000 mAh range. That is a demonstration, not the stated installed battery in the Magic V6. HONOR identifies the Magic V6’s battery as 6,660 mAh and describes its material as fifth-generation silicon-carbon with 25% silicon content.

Keeping those claims separate matters: a technology demonstration can indicate a direction for development, but it does not establish that a particular retail model contains that battery or achieves the demonstrated capacity.

Not necessarily. Milliamp-hours (mAh) describe battery capacity, not how long a phone lasts on a charge. Runtime also depends on factors such as screen use, brightness, processor workload, software, signal conditions and power management. The manufacturer figures above do not provide controlled, like-for-like runtime results across brands or models, so they cannot establish which phone lasts longer in everyday use.

When comparing foldables, check the exact regional variant, folded and unfolded thickness, weight and stated capacity. For battery life, look for independent tests conducted under comparable conditions rather than inferring endurance from mAh or thinness alone.
