What the FX5 adds for production
Open Gate and 5K capture
The FX5’s central advantage is flexibility at capture and in post. Sony lists a 5K full-frame stacked sensor, 5K recording up to 60 fps, and Open Gate recording. Open Gate can give a production more room to reframe for different aspect ratios, but Sony specifies that Open Gate is available only when recording X-OCN. That makes it most relevant when the production can support that format through recording, storage, and post. Sony FX5 product information Sony FX5 specifications

Internal X-OCN and latitude claims
Sony lists internal 16-bit scene-linear X-OCN and claims more than 15 stops of latitude in S-Log3 in its July 2026 FX5 materials. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent comparative measurements. They describe potential capture flexibility; they do not establish how the FX5 will compare with the FX3 in a particular scene, exposure, lens, or grade. Do not budget around planned modes as if they have shipped
Sony’s July 2026 announcement said 5K (3:2) X-OCN at 120 fps and 4K at 240p were planned through a firmware update in August 2027 or later. Treat those modes as planned until Sony confirms the update is available and documents the final mode restrictions. The current feature material lists 5K up to 60 fps and 4K up to 120 fps. Why the FX3 remains a strong 4K-first choice
Internal 4K slow motion
Sony lists internal UHD 4K recording up to 120p on the FX3, as well as Full HD up to 240p. If the delivery is 4K-centered and those modes meet the shooting plan, the FX5’s Open Gate and X-OCN options may not justify changing an established kit. Sony FX3 product information

- Cinematic 4K resolution, precise autofocus, 10-bit S-Log, HDR recording, and 16-bit RAW output for exceptional creative control.
Recording and rig flexibility
The FX3 records internal 10-bit 4:2:2 XAVC modes and can output RAW over HDMI to a compatible recorder. Sony positions it as a compact full-frame Cinema Line camera, including a video-first, handheld-friendly design. Those specifications make it a credible option when existing FX3-compatible rigging and media, or a simpler 4K workflow, matter more than FX5-specific formats. Account for media, audio, and the complete kit
Media follows the recording mode
For FX5 X-OCN recorded to card, Sony specifies CFexpress Type A. For the FX3, card-speed requirements depend on the selected codec and frame rate. Check Sony’s current media guidance against the exact recording mode rather than assuming one card specification covers every format. The FX5’s higher-end capture options can add workflow cost beyond the body price.

Compare handles and included accessories
The FX5’s XLR-H2 handle is not compatible with the FX3 and does not include a microphone. Sony’s FX3 product material describes a top-handle XLR/TRS input arrangement. Compare the actual body bundle and audio configuration you need; body-only prices do not show the cost of building out equivalent production rigs. Include lenses and existing gear
Both cameras use Sony E-mount lenses, so lenses already in a production’s kit may reduce the incremental cost of either body. Check coverage and the needs of the shoot before treating an existing lens as a suitable match; mount compatibility alone does not determine whether a lens fits a particular production.

Which camera fits your production?
Choose the FX5 when
- You have a specific need for Open Gate reframing and can use the X-OCN workflow it requires.
- 5K capture, internal 16-bit scene-linear X-OCN, or the FX5’s monitoring and operating options solve a real production need.
- You have budgeted for the relevant media and post-production workflow, not just the camera body.
- You are interested in the firmware-planned higher-frame-rate modes and can make a purchase decision without treating them as currently available.
Choose the FX3 when
- Your delivery is 4K-centered and internal 4K up to 120p covers the brief.
- Your existing FX3-compatible rig, media, or production workflow makes switching less attractive.
- The FX5’s Open Gate and X-OCN options would add cost or complexity without a clear use in your work.
Compare the complete setup before deciding
If your decision depends on an XLR handle, high-frame-rate slow motion, long takes, or a particular post workflow, confirm the included accessories and the mode-specific recorder or media requirements with Sony. Sony describes the FX5 body as compact and lists a 4-axis LCD and advanced monitoring support, while the FX3 is also presented as compact; the better operating setup depends on the rig and production needs, not specifications alone. The available specifications do not establish a universal winner or replace testing with your own workflow. Sony FX5 product information Sony FX3 product information
