Most often, FFmpeg stops because it has reached the end of the one episode—or finite episode list—it was given. YouTube Live does not make FFmpeg replay its input. To repeat one file or an ordered playlist, use FFmpeg’s input-loop option -stream_loop -1 before the relevant -i. That is the leading explanation, not a confirmed diagnosis: without the command, files, logs and YouTube health report, the exact cause cannot be established.
First, find out where playback stops
- Make FFmpeg’s ending visible. Run the same command with normal log output visible; temporarily remove
-loglevel quietor shell redirection. Note the last input opened, the final warning or error, and the process exit code. If the command uses-xerroror other error-related options, account for them when interpreting the exit. - If FFmpeg never opens the next episode, inspect the playlist actually passed to it: order, filenames, paths, quoting, working directory and file permissions.
- If each episode opens but playback ends at the last one, the input is probably finite and not looped. The concat demuxer reads listed files sequentially; it does not repeat the list by itself. See FFmpeg’s command-line documentation and concat demuxer documentation.
- If it reaches the next episode but glitches, skips or errors, inspect stream compatibility and timestamps at the boundary. The concat demuxer expects matching streams, including codecs and time bases. Unequal durations or inaccurate duration metadata can introduce gaps or artifacts.
- If FFmpeg keeps running but YouTube reports a problem, compare timestamped FFmpeg errors with the health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. Ingest problems are different from FFmpeg reaching end-of-file.
Loop a single podcast episode
Put -stream_loop -1 before the -i for the file you want repeated:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i episode.mp4 [encoding and output options] "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_INGEST_URL"-stream_loop -1 requests indefinite repetition of that input. It is an input option, so its position matters: placing it after the corresponding -i does not apply it to that input.

Loop an ordered list of episodes
For multiple episodes, make the desired sequence a concat-demuxer input, then loop that input. For example, with the files and manifest in the same directory:

It does not make incompatible files compatible: the files need matching streams, including codecs and time bases. Test the transitions locally and review the logs before broadcasting. If inputs require conversion, the FFmpeg FAQ describes the concat filter for workflows that re-encode; it also has stream-parameter and timestamp requirements, so normalize inputs deliberately.

Separate end-of-file from a connection failure
Reaching the last packet in a local file or finite concat list is an input-completion issue. Losing an RTMP/RTMPS output connection is a separate network or ingest issue. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes HTTP options such as reconnect for disconnections before EOF and reconnect_at_eof for treating EOF as an error for reconnect purposes, particularly for live or endless streams. Those options do not turn a local finite playlist into a loop. Check the actual log before changing reconnect settings: FFmpeg protocol documentation.
Check YouTube’s ingest health and settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance currently recommends RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval. Its settings page lists H.264, H.265 or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio; the Live error page also gives specific diagnostics for codecs, bitrate, stream count, audio channels, frame rate and keyframe frequency. Because the general error guidance and settings table do not phrase codec support identically, follow the applicable settings shown for your ingest mode and the specific error in Studio rather than assuming one broad warning covers every configuration.

What is needed to confirm the specific cause?
The symptom alone cannot distinguish normal input completion from a playlist, process or YouTube-side issue. A useful diagnosis needs the complete FFmpeg command with the stream key redacted, the playlist, ffprobe stream summaries for the episodes, FFmpeg output from startup through exit, the exit status and any supervising script behavior, plus YouTube Live Control Room health messages from the time it stopped.
