If Puppeteer is not the right fit for capturing website screenshots in Node.js, the main alternatives are Playwright for a code-first browser workflow or a hosted screenshot service when you would rather submit a URL than operate a browser. For the least browser setup, try ScreenshotNeo first: it removes consent banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots. The right choice depends on how much control you need over page interaction, where you want browser execution to happen, and how much service dependency you accept.
Choose by the work you need to do
| Need | Path to consider | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Control navigation and capture as part of a browser automation workflow | Playwright or Puppeteer | You retain control of browser steps, but run and manage the browser environment yourself unless you connect to a remote browser. |
| Send a URL and receive a screenshot without running a local browser | ScreenshotNeo, Browserless, or ScreenshotOne | You depend on a hosted service; check its current limits, availability and commercial terms. |
| Capture a long page or just one element | Check for full-page and element/selector capture | These options are documented for Puppeteer and Browserless; confirm the precise behavior and limits of any service you choose. |
| Minimize dependence on an external provider | Run browser automation in your own environment | This avoids a hosted capture dependency, but leaves browser operations with your team. The available documentation does not establish comparative total cost. |
There are no independent performance or image-quality benchmarks in the cited product documentation, so these options should not be treated as a speed or fidelity ranking.
1. ScreenshotNeo: a hosted API with one-request capture
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A GET request takes a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Its capture flow can accept cookie/consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response includes X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
For a Node.js URL-to-image workflow, use the API directly rather than launching Puppeteer:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
This example sends the request; to save the response as a file, check the HTTP status and write the response bytes to disk. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication, response handling and request options.
Beyond straightforward URL capture, ScreenshotNeo documents full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF options, HTML/CSS input, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks before capture, selector hiding, wait conditions, request/resource blocking, custom headers and cookies, user-agent and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable cache TTL, signed public image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI spec. It also accepts parameter names used by other screenshot APIs to make switching easier.

2. Playwright: keep browser automation in your Node.js app
Playwright is a code-first browser automation option to investigate if screenshots are one step in a larger workflow involving page navigation or interaction. The cited Browserless documentation demonstrates connecting to a remote Playwright browser, but it does not provide a complete feature comparison between Playwright and Puppeteer. Check Playwright’s current documentation for its own installation and screenshot API details before adopting it; those details are not established by the sources used here.
If the important distinction is where Chromium runs rather than which automation API your code uses, Browserless documents a remote connection workflow for playwright-core. That lets a Node.js project retain a Playwright-style workflow while outsourcing browser execution. It adds a hosted browser dependency, so verify service availability and terms for your use case.

3. Browserless: hosted screenshots or a remote browser
Browserless documents two approaches: submit a screenshot request to its REST endpoint, or connect a browser-automation client to a remote browser. Its REST API uses POST /screenshot, supports PNG/JPEG output, full-page screenshots, selector-based element cropping and clip regions, plus waits and navigation controls. The precise request body and authentication details should be taken from the current Browserless documentation.
The remote-browser approach is useful when a URL-only endpoint is too limited but you do not want to run the browser locally. Browserless shows Node.js examples using puppeteer-core and playwright-core over WebSocket, as well as an HTTP example that saves returned PNG data. It remains a hosted-service choice rather than a way to remove browser automation from the design altogether.
4. ScreenshotOne: a Node.js SDK or HTTP request
ScreenshotOne documents a Node.js SDK and a simple HTTP request workflow to capture a URL and save the returned image. Its website advertises 100 free screenshots per month; this is a vendor offer, not an independently verified allowance, and should be checked against the current plan terms before relying on it. The service presents avoiding local Puppeteer setup and browser management as a benefit; that is the vendor’s framing, not an independent comparison.

For a second hosted-service option, compare ScreenshotOne’s current request parameters and commercial terms with your capture requirements. The available documentation establishes its SDK and HTTP paths, but does not support claims that it is faster, more accurate or more reliable than alternatives.
What to check before switching
- Capture scope: Determine whether you need a full page, a selected element, a clipped region or a viewport-only image.
- Readiness: Identify whether the target page needs a navigation wait, a selector wait or another readiness condition before capture.
- Workflow control: If screenshots follow clicks, scrolling or other browser actions, a browser automation library or remote-browser connection may fit better than a URL-only endpoint.
- Operations: Decide whether your team wants to manage browser installation and execution or rely on a hosted provider.
- Commercial terms: Recheck current service limits, pricing and availability directly with the provider; these can change.
- Evidence: Do not choose on unsupported speed or fidelity claims. The cited materials document APIs and features, not independent benchmarks.
Common problems and fixes
The screenshot shows a loading state or incomplete page
A page may need more than a navigation event to render the content you want. Use the wait or navigation controls documented by your chosen library or hosted service, and wait for a meaningful selector when the page has a reliable one. Browserless documents waits and navigation controls; the exact syntax depends on the endpoint or client workflow.
The element is missing from the image
Confirm that the selector matches the intended element and that the element is present and visible at capture time. Puppeteer’s guide describes element capture with ElementHandle.screenshot() and notes that a hidden target may need to be scrolled into view. Browserless documents selector-based cropping for its screenshot endpoint.

The output format or quality is unexpected
Puppeteer documents screenshot options for type, quality, path, clip, fullPage and omitBackground. Its reference notes that quality does not apply to PNG images. Check the requested format and options rather than assuming a quality setting affects every format.
The page background is not transparent
For Puppeteer, check omitBackground in the screenshot options. The official reference documents transparent-background capture through that option; use a supported output format and confirm the rendered page does not paint an opaque background itself.
A hosted request fails or returns an unexpected result
Check the provider’s current authentication requirements, endpoint, request format, URL encoding and response handling. For ScreenshotNeo, inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed to distinguish the page outcome and billing status. For Browserless or ScreenshotOne, consult their current API documentation for the response and error format.

FAQ
Can I keep using Puppeteer while moving the browser off my machine?
Yes. Browserless documents a Node.js connection to a remote browser using puppeteer-core. It is a hosted browser arrangement, not a fully local workflow.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhich alternative is fastest?
The cited sources do not contain independent benchmarks, so they do not establish a fastest option. Measure the pages and capture settings that matter to your own workload.
Is a hosted screenshot API the same as a browser automation library?
No. A library gives your Node.js code a browser automation workflow; a hosted screenshot API accepts a request for a capture, while a remote-browser service can preserve a library workflow but run the browser elsewhere.
