It identifies a failed write, not the underlying cause: the connection may have dropped, YouTube’s ingest may have closed, settings or credentials may have been rejected, or an earlier input or process failure may have left FFmpeg with nowhere to write. The error by itself does not prove a YouTube outage or a particular network fault.
What “Broken pipe” tells you—and what it doesn’t
FFmpeg’s error table maps EPIPE to “Broken pipe.” In a YouTube radio relay, the message can appear as av_interleaved_write_frame(): Broken pipe or in a trailer-writing error. Those phrases say where FFmpeg encountered a failed output write; they do not identify why the write failed. FFmpeg error codes

The cause has to be found from the events before the final line and by separating the input path from the output path. A radio source that stopped producing audio, an encoder or process problem, an ingest closure, invalid credentials, and a network interruption require different fixes.

Find the first failure in the log
- Save the complete output. Capture the log from before the first warning or error, not just the last “Broken pipe” line. Add
-reportif you need a fuller FFmpeg diagnostic log. Before sharing a command or log, redact the stream key: YouTube describes it as the credential that lets the service accept the feed. YouTube encoder streaming settings - Locate the earliest warning or error. Review stream mapping and input progress as well as output messages. Note whether the failure is at startup, at an input boundary or loop, after an idle period, or after a long run. Timing can guide investigation, but does not prove a cause; a historical FFmpeg-user report, for example, records broken-pipe and trailer errors after a relay had run for hours without establishing why it stopped. - Keep the output destination in the log review. Check the RTMP/RTMPS destination and stream credentials, but never publish the full URL if it contains the key.
Separate radio input problems from output problems
Test the two sides independently where practical. First check that the radio source remains reachable and that FFmpeg continues to receive and process packets. Then write a representative input to a local file. If that succeeds, try a known-good file as input to the YouTube destination. Check YouTube’s ingest settings and stream health
In YouTube Live Control Room, use the server URL and stream key shown for the stream, then check its preview, ingest state, and any stream-health message. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. It lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube’s advanced recommendations include 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 kbps. Test the encoder before going live and watch stream health and messages while the stream runs. YouTube live encoder settings
Check upload capacity and connection stability
Measure outbound upload capacity under realistic conditions, including other people or devices sharing the connection. YouTube recommends capacity for the total stream bitrate plus 20% headroom and warns that a connectivity disruption can break a live stream. Common symptoms and the next check
- Failure immediately at startup: Inspect earlier log messages and verify the URL, key, ingest state, and compatible encoder settings. “Broken pipe” alone does not tell you which check failed.
- Failure after a long run: Compare log timestamps with input transitions, network events, and YouTube stream-health messages. A long delay is useful context, not proof that a timeout or outage occurred.
- Failure when the radio source changes or loops: Check whether FFmpeg still receives packets and test the source locally, apart from the YouTube destination.
- Failure during otherwise continuous output: Check outbound capacity and connection events, then verify the destination and ingest status. A connection disruption can interrupt a live stream.
- FFmpeg exits and the stream stays down: A restart policy can restore the process after it exits, but that addresses availability rather than the underlying cause. Record timestamps and uptime so you can correlate the next failure with input and network events.
What to collect before asking for help
A specific command-line fix cannot be chosen from the EPIPE message alone. Include the FFmpeg version/build, the command with the key redacted, the complete log from before the first error, whether the input is local or remote, and YouTube’s stream-health status at the time. Those details help establish whether the failure is on the input, encoding, network, or ingest side.
