If your YouTube radio livestream keeps “disconnecting from the audio source,” first find out whether the audio input is disappearing inside your encoder or whether the whole stream is losing its connection to YouTube. Watch the encoder’s audio meter and make a local recording while the problem occurs: if sound disappears there too, check the selected device and routing; if local audio stays clear while the published stream disconnects, investigate the network and encoder connection.
What does “disconnecting from the audio source” mean?
The phrase can describe three different symptoms, and each points to a different fault:

- An input vanishes or its meter stops moving in the encoder: suspect device selection, audio routing, or the source device.
- The video stays live but the audio goes silent: check whether the encoder is still receiving audio and whether the intended source is routed to the stream.
- The entire broadcast disconnects: check the encoder’s connection status, dropped frames, and outbound network path.
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder output, its errors and CPU load, and a local archive recording before deciding whether the issue is with the source or the internet connection: YouTube Help: troubleshoot live-stream issues.

- Reproduce the issue while monitoring the encoder. Watch its audio meter and note whether the encoder reports a source error, dropped frames, or a disconnect.
- Record locally at the same time. Listen to the file around the moment the live stream fails. If the recording loses audio too, the problem is likely before the stream leaves the computer. If it remains healthy while YouTube drops, focus on transport to the platform.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Note any reported errors and the time they occurred, then compare those details with the encoder log.
- Record the scope of the failure. Note whether only audio stops, the video also stops, or the broadcast disconnects entirely; whether the source meter moves; and whether you are on Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
If the audio source disappears inside OBS
Confirm the selected device and its meter
In OBS, confirm that the intended input or output device is selected for the active scene or in Settings → Audio. Watch its meter while audio should be playing. If the meter does not move, the stream cannot receive sound from that source.

Check for duplicate capture
If you added an Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture source to a scene, check whether that same device is also enabled globally in Settings → Audio. OBS warns that capturing the same device in both places can cause echo. Disable the duplicate global device when you intend to capture it through the scene source instead. See the OBS audio sources guide.
Check whether the operating system still sees the device
If the source is external hardware, note its name, operating system, connection type, and whether it also disappears from the operating system’s sound settings when the encoder loses it. That comparison helps separate an encoder selection or routing issue from a device or connection fault. The cause cannot be pinned down without those details; do not assume a replacement interface or microphone is needed before isolating the failure.

OBS documents Audio Input/Output Capture for Windows and macOS. On Linux, its guidance points users to ALSA or PulseAudio sources instead.
If local audio continues but the whole stream disconnects
Use the encoder’s connection log and dropped-frame status to investigate the route from your computer to YouTube. OBS describes intermittent disconnections and dropped frames as signs of instability between the computer and the remote ingest server. Its connection troubleshooting guide recommends checking the following:

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity
Measure the upload speed you can sustain, not just a peak result, and check the streaming service’s limits. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for video bitrate—not a guaranteed setting or a universal YouTube requirement. If the connection is unstable, test a lower bitrate and check whether dropped frames stop.
Test the network path
- If you are using Wi-Fi, compare with a wired Ethernet connection. A cable may help with network instability; it will not fix a missing or misrouted audio device.
- Restarting the modem and router can help determine whether the problem is a general connectivity issue.
- If available, try another ingest server and compare results. Testing another service can also help distinguish a service-specific issue from a problem on your connection path.
- Do not replace a router, modem, network card, switch, extender, or cable until testing points to that component. OBS advises contacting your ISP if you are unsure whether network hardware is faulty.
Check software that can interfere with streaming
VPNs, firewalls, antivirus tools, and network-prioritization software may affect the connection. If you test by temporarily disabling security software, restore protection afterward; if that test identifies the cause, add an OBS exception rather than leaving protection off. OBS also recommends checking for current network drivers from the computer or motherboard maker.

OBS documents Windows-only options for network optimization/TCP pacing and dynamic bitrate. Dynamic bitrate may reduce stream quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem.
When a stream key is relevant—and when it is not
YouTube describes stream keys as the information that tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. A key is relevant to certain encoder startup errors; YouTube recommends obtaining a new key and updating the encoder when that specific error occurs. Rotating a key is not a general fix for an audio source that vanishes or for intermittent network instability. See YouTube Help: manage live stream settings.

Escalate with evidence, not guesses
If local audio is healthy but the connection remains unstable after you check the local network, contact your ISP with the time of the failure, encoder logs, dropped-frame data, bitrate, connection type, and whether the issue also occurs on another network. YouTube also advises reporting persistent live-stream problems through its troubleshooting guidance.
If the local recording and encoder meter both lose audio, document the device name, operating system, connection type, and whether the device disappears from system sound settings. Those details help narrow down whether the fault is in the source, device connection, or encoder configuration.
