Encrypted fields break queries when a database or application tries to compare or calculate on ciphertext using an operation the encryption scheme does not support. Fix the problem by identifying the exact operation, matching it to the database’s supported encryption feature and compatible client, then planning any required schema or data migration before rollout. “Queryable” does not mean every operator works, and the options in SQL Server, MongoDB, and AWS are not interchangeable.
Why can’t I query an encrypted database column?
Ordinary randomized encryption is designed to prevent the database from seeing the original value. Encrypting the same plaintext more than once can produce different ciphertext, so the server cannot necessarily use a normal equality comparison. It also cannot perform calculations on ciphertext unless the encryption feature is specifically designed to support the requested operation.

Encryption features that enable searches restore selected operations, not unrestricted access to plaintext. A field configured for equality lookups may still reject range filters, pattern matching, sorting, joins, aggregation, uniqueness checks, or comparisons with another column. The exact support depends on the database, encryption mode, driver, and deployment.
First identify the operation that fails
Replace “the query does not work” with the precise behavior the application needs. Different operations may require different encryption choices, or may not be supported for the field at all.

- Auto-lock - The crypto drive will automatically encrypt all data and lock when removed from a PC/Mac or when the screen saver or "computer lock" function is activated on the host PC/Mac
- Secure Entry - Data cannot be accessed without the correct high-strength alphanumeric 8-16 character password. A password hint option is available. The password hint cannot match the password
- Exact match: Find a record whose encrypted value equals a supplied value.
- Range or ordering: Select values above or below a threshold, or sort by the protected value.
- Pattern matching: Match a prefix, substring, or SQL
LIKEpattern. - Relationships or calculations: Join on the field, compare it with another column, aggregate it, or enforce uniqueness.
- Search: Determine whether the need is a specific lookup or full-text search; they are not the same capability.
Write down the operation and the exact failing query before changing encryption settings. A setting that enables one query type does not imply support for the others.
Choose a fix that matches the database and query
| Need | Documented path | Constraint to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Equality lookups in SQL Server | Evaluate deterministic encryption in Always Encrypted and use supported parameterized operations. | Equality patterns are exposed, and the supported operations remain limited. |
| Pattern matching, comparisons, sorting, or indexing in SQL Server | Evaluate Always Encrypted with secure enclaves. | Confirm that the required operation is supported by the specific server, driver, and deployment. |
| Equality or range queries on selected MongoDB fields | Configure the appropriate Queryable Encryption query type when creating the collection. | Equality and range are distinct query types; queryability adds storage and write costs and supports only a defined set of operations. |
| Selected searches over encrypted AWS database records | Configure searchable-encryption beacons for the intended searches. | Beacon design trades search efficiency against information revealed about value distributions; a newly configured beacon does not map existing records. |
| No direct filtering needed on the sensitive value | Keep that value encrypted and filter on a separate suitable queryable or unencrypted field. | Filtering another field does not enable searches on the protected value itself. |
These approaches solve different problems. Compare required operators, information leakage, database and driver compatibility, migration needs, storage and write overhead, observability, and schema lifecycle before choosing.

Fix SQL Server Always Encrypted query failures
Check the encryption mode
With Always Encrypted, randomized encryption does not permit computations on the encrypted column. Deterministic encryption supports a limited set of equality-based operations. If the application needs pattern matching, comparisons, sorting, or indexing, Microsoft identifies secure enclaves as the path to evaluate for those operations; verify support for the exact operation and deployment.

Use a compatible encryption-aware client or driver and parameterize relevant inserts and filters. Avoid comparing encrypted data with a plaintext literal or mixing plaintext and encrypted values in an operation. A query that works for an unencrypted column may not be valid for an encrypted one, even when its SQL syntax looks ordinary.

- Protection against brute force password attacks - Data is automatically erased after 6 unsuccessful access attempts. The data of the USB flash drive type c encryption with dual connectors is destroyed and the cryptographic drive is reset.
- Durable dual-layer waterproof design* — Protects the crypto reader from bumps, drops, run-in and immersion in water. The electronics are protected by a hardened internal case. Rubberized silicone outer case provides a final layer of protection.
- Auto-Lock —The cryptographic key automatically encrypts all data and locks when removed from a PC/Mac or when screen protection or "computer lock" is enabled.
- Secure Entry —Data on these flash drives cannot be accessed without the correct alphanumeric password of 8 to 16 characters. A password indication option is available for this flash drive. The hint cannot match the password.
Test the whole application path
Check writes as well as reads: parameter types, filters, updates, and any ORM-generated statements touching the column. Confirm that the driver is configured for the encryption setup in use, and test against the server and client versions actually deployed. If an operation depends on secure enclaves, validate that capability in the target environment rather than assuming a development setup proves production support.
Fix MongoDB Queryable Encryption failures
Match the field’s query type to the operation
Inspect the collection’s encrypted-fields schema and the configured query type for each field. Equality and range are separate query types; one does not automatically enable the other. Queryable Encryption supports a defined subset of operations, so confirm that the exact operator is supported by the MongoDB release and deployment in use. Prefix, suffix, and substring query types were identified as Public Preview in the MongoDB manual referenced for this topic; confirm their current availability and support before building a production dependency on them.

Keep local encryption rules and server schema aligned
The application’s local encryptedFieldsMap rules must include the fields expected by the server schema. Avoid changing this map casually: client-side encryption configuration and collection schema need to describe the same fields and query behavior. Also account for collection and index restrictions documented for the feature before designing the migration.
Plan schema changes and existing data
A field’s query type cannot simply be changed in place; some schema changes require a new collection. Adding a previously plaintext field to encryptedFieldsMap does not convert old plaintext records into the form expected by subsequent encrypted queries. Plan a backfill or re-encryption path, validate the migrated records, and coordinate the application cutover with the collection change.

Account for storage, writes, and diagnostics
MongoDB documents additional storage use and slower writes for queryable fields. Its diagnostics may redact encrypted fields, and some operations may be omitted from query logs. If logs do not expose enough detail to diagnose a slow or failing query, use application performance monitoring and controlled application-level measurements rather than assuming the database log contains the full picture.

Beacons enable selected searches over encrypted database records; they do not make every search possible. Review the configured beacon and the specific lookup it is intended to support. Beacon length and partitioning affect false positives, and the beacon approach can reveal information about value distributions. Design and evaluate that leakage against the application’s threat model rather than treating a successful query as proof that the configuration is appropriate.
A newly configured beacon maps new records, not existing ones. If the application must search historical data through it, plan how those records will be rewritten or otherwise brought into the intended configuration, then verify that both old and new records behave as expected during the transition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse a diagnostic and rollout sequence
- Reproduce one failure: Record the exact query, operation, error, application path, and deployed database and driver versions.
- Identify the field’s encryption setup: Check SQL Server’s randomized or deterministic mode and enclave needs, MongoDB’s encrypted-fields schema and query type, or AWS’s beacon configuration.
- Validate client configuration: Confirm the application uses a compatible encryption-aware client or driver. Check SQL Server parameterization and, for MongoDB, alignment between local
encryptedFieldsMaprules and the server schema. - Check the data’s history: Determine whether records were written before the current encryption or search configuration. If so, design and test the required backfill or re-encryption.
- Confirm operator and schema support: Verify that the requested operation is supported and that any needed collection, index, or enclave constraints are satisfied.
- Test before rollout: Exercise parameterized writes, reads, updates, migration, error handling, query performance, and diagnostic visibility using the production versions and representative data.
Do not treat a successful equality test as validation of range, sorting, pattern matching, or any other operation. Test each required behavior separately, including the application or ORM path that generates it.
Quick Recap
What to include in the implementation plan
- The exact fields and operations the application needs to support.
- The selected encryption mode or searchable-encryption configuration, along with its information-leakage tradeoff.
- Compatible database, client, driver, and deployment requirements for each operation.
- A schema and data migration plan, including how existing plaintext or differently configured records will be handled.
- Expected storage and write impact, plus a way to monitor application behavior when encrypted values are redacted from database diagnostics.
- Separate tests for every query operator the application will rely on, run against the exact versions intended for deployment.
