What Hardware Do You Need to Run AI Agents at Home?

Cloud-backed agents can run without a local inference GPU. For local models, size memory around the model, context, runtime, and real tool-using tasks.

You do not necessarily need a powerful GPU to run an AI agent at home. If the agent uses a cloud-hosted language model, your computer mainly runs the agent software and its connected tools. If the model runs locally, memory—especially GPU VRAM or Apple unified memory—sets the practical limits, along with context length, software support, and the rest of the machine’s workload.

First decide where the AI model will run

An AI agent is the software that coordinates a model with tools such as files, browsers, or other services. The model can run on a provider’s servers or on your own computer. NVIDIA describes OpenClaw as supporting both cloud and local language models (NVIDIA’s OpenClaw local-model playbook).

  • Cloud model, home-hosted agent: You do not need to size a local GPU for inference. Your home machine runs the agent and any local tools you connect to it. Relevant prompts and data may be sent to the model provider, so account for that when deciding what the agent can access.
  • Local model: The computer must hold the model’s weights and make room for context, the inference runtime, and other active work. A model that loads is not necessarily large or capable enough to handle a full agent turn with tool instructions, history, and generated output.

OpenClaw’s rolling local-model documentation describes an 8 GiB host-memory floor for its managed recipes. That is a setup floor, not a promise that a particular model will fit comfortably or respond quickly. Fit depends on the model weights, context, runtime, and competing workloads (OpenClaw: Local models).

Use memory tiers as a starting point for local inference

NVIDIA’s 2026 guides map several model sizes to RTX GPU memory ranges. These are vendor recommendations for starting points, not universal hardware requirements, independent performance tests, or guarantees about agent quality.

Local inference tier NVIDIA’s suggested starting point What it does—and does not—tell you
Entry RTX 6–8 GB VRAM for Qwen 3.5 4B A starting point for a smaller model; it does not establish how well that model will handle your agent’s tasks.
Midrange RTX 12–16 GB VRAM for Qwen 3.5 9B or Gemma 4 12B Provides room for a larger suggested model, but context and other GPU workloads still use memory.
Larger RTX 24 GB or more VRAM for Qwen 3.6 27B A larger model tier; it is not a universal minimum for running an agent.
Large-memory platform DGX Spark for Qwen 3.6 35B; NVIDIA says DGX Spark has 128 GB of memory A platform-specific vendor recommendation, not evidence that it is a household best-value choice.

These model-to-memory pairings come from NVIDIA’s RTX LLM guide and its OpenClaw setup playbook, checked October 4, 2026. Treat the figures as model-dependent guidance: the sources do not establish a universal fit rule across runtimes, quantization settings, or machines.

Allow memory for the agent’s full context

Context is the material the model may need to consider during a turn: the prompt, tool definitions, conversation history, and tool results. NVIDIA recommends at least a 32K context for its OpenClaw local setup and suggests 64K or higher when memory headroom permits. A longer context consumes more memory, so a model that fits for a short chat may not fit for a longer tool-using workflow.

OpenClaw likewise advises leaving room for the prompt, tools, history, and generated output, then trying representative tasks before making a local model the default. A brief prompt that returns an answer is not enough to confirm that a model and machine can complete your actual agent workflow.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

Check the software and hardware combination

GPU memory alone does not determine whether local inference will work. The operating system, card, driver, and inference backend must be compatible. Ollama documents NVIDIA support subject to compute-capability and driver conditions, AMD support through specific ROCm configurations, and Metal acceleration on Apple devices. Check the current documentation for the exact hardware and software combination before buying (Ollama: GPU support).

For serving a local model, OpenClaw can manage a llama.cpp server using hardware-aware recommendations or connect to an independently managed model server. Its documentation also lists LM Studio, Ollama, and OpenAI-compatible server options. NVIDIA presents LM Studio and Ollama as straightforward serving choices for discrete GPUs, while vLLM is a more configurable Linux route. The right option depends on the machine and the setup you want to maintain; the software names do not remove the need to check compatibility.

NVIDIA recommends choosing the largest model that fits comfortably. Quantization can lower memory requirements, but aggressive quantization can reduce response quality. A useful fit check therefore includes the intended model and quantization, configured context length, actual free VRAM or unified memory, disk space, and compatibility with the selected runtime.

Choose based on your workload, not just a GPU label

Compare systems against the job you want the agent to do. A GPU name or compute designation alone does not tell you whether the model, context, and serving software will fit together.

  • Inference location: Decide whether the model will be cloud-hosted or local. The local-model VRAM tiers above do not apply to a cloud model.
  • Model and memory: Match a specific model to available VRAM or unified memory, leaving room for the runtime and other work.
  • Context needs: Account for tool instructions, history, and results—not only the first user prompt.
  • Platform support: Verify the GPU, operating system, driver, and serving backend together.
  • Operating pattern: Decide whether the computer must stay available for the agent and whether it will share resources with other applications.
  • Privacy and isolation: Decide which files, accounts, and network resources the agent is allowed to use.

The official guides cited here do not establish a cross-vendor household benchmark, independently measured tokens per second, typical electricity use, current retail prices, or a best-value exact computer. The memory recommendations should not be read as a promise of speed, a particular power bill, or a specific product pick.

Test the workflow before relying on it

  1. Choose the inference path and model. For local use, check the model’s download and weight requirements and choose a context setting that reflects the tasks you intend to run.
  2. Confirm available resources. Check free GPU VRAM or Apple unified memory, host RAM, and disk space with the intended applications running.
  3. Verify compatibility. Check the current GPU, OS, driver, and inference-backend support documentation for your exact configuration.
  4. Run representative agent turns. Test tasks that include the tools, prompt length, history, and outputs the agent will encounter in normal use. Confirm that it completes the tool calls and that memory remains available.
  5. Adjust before changing hardware. If the workload does not fit, consider a shorter context, a smaller model, or a different supported runtime; if those trade-offs do not meet the task, then reassess the hardware.

NVIDIA’s concise starting principle is: “The easiest way to get started is to choose a model that fits your GPU, then choose the app that matches what you want to do.” The practical extension for agents is to confirm that the model also fits the context and tool-using turns you actually need.

Protect the computer and accounts the agent can reach

An agent’s risk depends partly on the permissions and data it can access, not just where its model runs. NVIDIA warns that connected files and tools can expose personal information or the host to malicious code and attacks. Its guidance recommends a separate clean PC or virtual machine, dedicated agent accounts, sharing only selected information, vetting third-party skills, protecting interfaces with authentication, and limiting internet access where the task allows (NVIDIA’s OpenClaw security guidance).

OpenClaw also notes that local models do not include the safety filters provided by hosted model services. Keep tool permissions narrow and treat untrusted content as a possible source of instructions aimed at manipulating the agent. Local inference changes where computation happens; it does not make an agent safe to give unrestricted access.
