To clean a front-load washer’s detergent drawer, remove it using the release described in your manual, wash its removable parts in warm water, and wipe the drawer recess. To clean the door gasket, gently clear debris from its folds and wipe the rubber with a manufacturer-approved solution. Dry both areas and leave the door and drawer open so moisture can escape. Drawer releases, cleaning solutions, and recommended schedules vary by model, so use your washer’s manual as the final authority.
What you’ll need
- A soft cloth and a dry towel
- Warm water
- A soft-bristled brush for drawer corners, if needed
- The cleaning solution permitted by your washer’s manual
Avoid abrasive pads and harsh cleaners. They can damage washer finishes, and the gasket may require a specific cleaning method. Samsung Canada gives this caution in its washer-cleaning guidance.

Clean the detergent drawer
- Check how the drawer releases. Consult the washer manual, then pull the drawer out and use its release mechanism as directed. Tabs and compartment layouts vary. Do not force a drawer that sticks.
- Remove only approved inserts. Take out detachable compartments or inserts only if the manual says they are removable.
- Wash the parts. Rinse the drawer and removable components in warm water. LG recommends using a soft-bristled brush to loosen residue, then rinsing and reassembling the components. LG also says not to put the tray components in a dishwasher; see its dispenser-drawer instructions.
- Wipe the drawer recess. Use a damp cloth or soft brush to clear accessible residue, taking care around tabs and other delicate parts.
- Dry and reinstall. Let the drawer and inserts dry before reassembling and sliding the drawer back in.
Clean the door gasket
- Inspect the folds. Open the washer door and look around the rubber gasket, paying particular attention to the lower folds where lint, hair, detergent residue, and moisture can collect.
- Remove debris gently. Pull the gasket lip back only as far as it moves without strain. Pick out visible material and wipe the surface and underside with a soft cloth. Do not scrub aggressively.
- Use only an approved solution. Follow the cleaning method in your manual. For example, LG’s US maintenance guidance dated May 29, 2026, describes using either 3/4 cup of bleach diluted in 1 gallon of warm water or vinegar instead. That formula is LG-specific, not a universal washer instruction. LG warns not to use straight bleach on the gasket because it can deteriorate over time. Never combine bleach and vinegar. - Follow model-specific directions if they differ. A separate LG gasket guide dated October 29, 2025, gives an oxygen-bleach dilution of 5 g in 5 L of warm water. These are distinct manufacturer directions, not formulas to combine or interchange; use the one permitted for your model. See LG’s gasket-cleaning guide.
- Dry the gasket. Wipe away remaining moisture with a clean, dry towel and leave the door open to air out.
How often should you clean each part?
There is no single schedule shared by all manufacturers. These examples apply to different brands, models, and markets:

These are manufacturer examples, not a universal timetable. Check the schedule for your washer in its manual. LG’s frequency guidance appears on its dispenser-cleaning page and front-load maintenance page; Samsung’s schedule is in its Canadian washer-cleaning guide.

Help the washer dry between washes
When practical, leave the door and detergent drawer open after use so air can circulate and moisture can evaporate. Samsung Canada recommends leaving both open after every wash, while LG also recommends ventilation after washing. Keep children away from an open washer.

Hand-cleaning the gasket and drawer removes residue from those reachable parts; it does not clean the washer’s tub. LG describes the Tub Clean cycle as a separate maintenance task and recommends using a suitable store-bought tub cleaner for that cycle. See its Tub Clean guidance.

If the gasket is torn or otherwise damaged, cleaning will not repair it; LG says damaged gasket material may require service. Its gasket guidance covers cleaning, while its washer odor guidance discusses odor and service-related concerns.
