Before adopting it for a project with an older runtime, check the requirements and compatibility notes for the exact release you plan to install. For everyday use, rubyfmt provides file-selection controls rather than a broad style-configuration system, and its current VS Code route is Ruby LSP with the rubyfmt community add-on.
Which Ruby versions does rubyfmt support?
The rubyfmt project README does not publish a minimum Ruby version or a compatibility matrix. That omission does not establish that every Ruby version works. Rubyfmt is written in Rust, but it formats Ruby source code; the implementation language alone does not settle which Ruby syntax or runtime versions a particular release supports.
For a project tied to an older Ruby runtime, verify the compatibility information for the exact rubyfmt release before rolling it out. Do not apply the Ruby 3.3 requirement associated with a different formatter named rfmt; it is not a rubyfmt requirement.
How do you install and run rubyfmt?
The project README documents Homebrew as a quick installation route and Cargo as a source-build option. Homebrew’s formula listed stable version 0.14.1 when checked on October 4, 2026; the formula also listed a HEAD build. Package versions and available bottles can change, so check the Homebrew rubyfmt formula for the current package details. The listed bottles at that check covered Apple Silicon macOS Tahoe, Sequoia, and Sonoma; Intel macOS Sonoma; and Linux ARM64 and x86_64. These are Homebrew distribution details, not a Ruby compatibility statement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- On a system with Homebrew, install with
brew install rubyfmt. - To build from source, follow the project’s Cargo instructions. The README identifies
target/release/rubyfmt-mainas the built executable; put it on yourPATHasrubyfmt. - Format a file to standard output with
rubyfmt file.rb, or change the file in place withrubyfmt -i file.rb. - To inspect a diff, use
rubyfmt -c file.rb. To format standard input, pipe content torubyfmt, for examplecat file.rb | rubyfmt. The README also documents passing directories to format multiple files.
How can you control which files rubyfmt formats?
Rubyfmt documents controls for selecting files and opting files in or out; these are not general formatting-style settings.
.rubyfmtignorein the project root excludes files using.gitignore-style patterns.- Rubyfmt respects
.gitignoreby default. Add--include-gitignoredwhen you want ignored files included. --header-opt-inrestricts formatting to files beginning with# rubyfmt: true.--header-opt-outskips files beginning with# rubyfmt: false.
The README reviewed here does not document configurable line length, quote style, or indentation width. Avoid assuming that settings from another formatter—or from an editor plug-in—are rubyfmt options.

How do you set up rubyfmt in VS Code?
The project README’s current recommended path is Ruby LSP together with the ruby-lsp-rubyfmt-formatter add-on. The Ruby LSP extension settings list rubyfmt as a formatter supplied by a community add-on, so installing Ruby LSP alone is not the complete setup.
- Add the add-on to the project development group with
bundle add ruby-lsp-rubyfmt-formatter --group development, or install it globally withgem install ruby-lsp-rubyfmt-formatter. - In VS Code settings, select Ruby LSP as the Ruby default formatter and enable format-on-save if desired.
- Set
rubyLsp.formattertorubyfmt.
The README also mentions Formatto as another route. Its older Ruby VS Code extension instructions are explicitly marked deprecated; treat them as a legacy option, not the recommended starting point.

What other editor integrations are documented?
| Editor | Documented route | Format-on-save or status notes |
|---|---|---|
| Neovim | Use the null-ls built-in source null_ls.builtins.formatting.rubyfmt. |
The project documents the integration; save behavior depends on your Neovim configuration. |
| Vim | Install the repository’s Vim plug-in through vim-plug or native packages. Set g:rubyfmt_path if the executable is not on PATH. |
Save behavior depends on the plug-in setup. |
| RubyMine and other JetBrains IDEs | Install File Watchers and import the project’s watchers.xml; the watcher can optionally be made global. |
The README documents a watcher integration. |
| Sublime Text | Install the Rubyfmt plug-in through Package Control. | The plug-in listing says format-on-save is enabled by default and documents executable settings and keyboard shortcuts. Package Control reported the plug-in was last modified six years ago; check its status before relying on it. |
| Atom | Install the rubyfmt package from Settings > Packages. | The README documents format-on-save and a keyboard shortcut. |
These integrations are documented routes, not guarantees of compatibility with every release of an editor or plug-in. If formatting fails inside an editor, check that the rubyfmt executable is on the editor’s PATH and confirm that the integration is maintained. For Sublime Text, the package’s syntax-error behavior is also relevant: its listing says files with syntax errors cannot be formatted.
For plug-in details, see the Sublime Text Package Control Rubyfmt listing and the editor instructions in the project README.

What does the project say about maintenance?
The project README says the original author is no longer working on open source in their spare time, while other contributors work regularly on rubyfmt and contributors with commit access are welcome to merge changes that pass CI. This is the project’s maintenance note, not a promise of a support period or predictable release schedule.
