One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchEdge firewalls attract attention because they sit at the boundary between trusted internal networks and less-trusted outside networks, where they process traffic arriving from the internet. That position makes an exposed service, weak credential, outdated software, or reachable management interface consequential: a weakness can provide an entry point or disrupt connectivity. This explains why the devices matter to attackers; it does not establish that firewalls are targeted more often than other kinds of equipment.
Securing the perimeter takes more than installing a firewall. Organizations need to know what is reachable, justify each public-facing service, keep devices supported and patched, restrict administration, reduce exposed services, segment networks, and monitor for suspicious activity.

Why are edge firewalls targets?
An edge firewall is deliberately placed at a logical boundary between networks with different security requirements. NIST describes firewalls as controls for separating such networks and locating policy enforcement at network boundaries in its Guidelines on Firewalls and Firewall Policy.
Because the device handles traffic arriving from outside, internet-reachable services and access controls on it can have significant consequences. A weakness could give an attacker a foothold, expose a management function, or interfere with network connectivity. This is a security inference from the device’s role and its exposure—not evidence that edge firewalls are attacked more frequently than other device categories.

CISA warns that organizations can unknowingly expose common weaknesses, including misconfigurations, default credentials, and outdated software. For edge devices, exposure may include management interfaces, remote-access features, or services that are not needed. CISA’s Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance, published June 4, 2025, says: “Many organizations unknowingly leave common vulnerabilities and weaknesses exposed to the internet, making them easy targets for exploitation.”
How to reduce the risk
1. Find every internet-facing asset
Build an inventory of public IP addresses, edge devices, management interfaces, remote-access endpoints, and the services associated with them. Compare external discovery results with the internal asset inventory, and assign an accountable owner to each item. CISA recommends scanning for publicly exposed systems and reassessing them routinely; its guidance points to its Cyber Hygiene Vulnerability Scanning service and web-based discovery tools. CISA names Censys, Shodan, Thingful, and Shadowserver as examples, not as government endorsements.

2. Justify each public-facing service
For every exposed service, record its business purpose, owner, allowed source networks, destination, protocol and port, and review date. Remove public access when it is not required, or restrict it to the networks and users that need it. Before changing reachability, check for operational dependencies so a security change does not interrupt an essential service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Keep devices patched and supported
Track each device’s model, software version, vendor support dates, security advisories, and patch status. Apply vendor security updates promptly through a risk-informed change process, checking the advisory for the exact device and version. If the vendor no longer provides security support, plan to replace the device rather than treating it as a durable perimeter control. CISA explicitly advises maintaining current patches and replacing devices that no longer receive security support.

4. Keep administration off the public internet
Do not expose an unrestricted management interface to the internet. Restrict administration to a dedicated, monitored path—ideally from dedicated administrative workstations, with a monitored jump host where appropriate—and use multifactor authentication where possible. CISA and partner agencies’ Enhanced Visibility and Hardening Guidance for Communications Infrastructure states: “Do not manage devices from the internet.” Its initial version is dated December 3, 2024; the CISA page is dated December 4, 2024.
5. Minimize services and limit what a breach can reach
Disable services and protocols that are unnecessary, unused, plaintext, or exploitable. For services that must remain exposed, use restrictive access control lists and current patches. Place public-facing systems such as web, DNS, and mail services in a demilitarized zone (DMZ) separated from internal networks and backend resources. Use VLANs or other segmentation to limit lateral movement if an exposed system is compromised.

6. Monitor activity and configuration
Enable logging and auditing, and send logs to a separate central system where possible. Monitor ingress and egress traffic for anomalous behavior, using flow monitoring at important network entry and exit points. Store network configurations centrally, review them, and alert on unauthorized changes. In particular, monitor configuration, account, route, and access-control changes outside the approved change process.
7. Reassess exposure as needs change
Repeat external exposure checks as infrastructure and business requirements change. A service that was justified when first deployed may no longer be needed, while new devices or interfaces can appear without being reflected in an asset inventory. A routine reassessment helps catch those changes before they become enduring public exposure.

What to check before changing the edge
Before approving a proposed control or configuration change, evaluate it against the same practical questions:
- Public reachability: Does it remove unnecessary exposure or restrict access to the intended sources?
- Management access: Is administration limited to a controlled, monitored path rather than the open internet?
- Support lifecycle: Can the device receive security patches, and is it still within vendor support?
- Blast radius: Does segmentation keep public-facing services apart from internal and backend systems?
- Visibility: Will teams be able to detect unusual traffic and unauthorized configuration changes?
- Operational impact: Have service dependencies, change approval, and recovery needs been considered?
A firewall is one part of layered boundary protection, not a guarantee that every system behind it is safe. The cited guidance supports these control areas but does not rank vendors or products; it also does not provide a measured comparison of how often firewalls are targeted relative to other device types.
