Why Edge.exe Links Open Firefox—and How to Fix the Routing

If ordinary web links open Firefox, that is usually the expected result when Firefox is your Windows default browser. A Windows feature or shortcut can still open Edge deliberately, however, because microsoft-edge: is a separate protocol that bypasses the normal HTTP/HTTPS default. First identify the link source and protocol; then correct the default association, policy, shortcut, or damaged installation that matches the symptom.

What “Edge.exe opens Firefox” can actually mean

The wording describes two different situations that look similar on screen:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • An ordinary http:// or https:// link opens Firefox because Firefox owns those default associations.
  • A Windows feature asks for Edge with the microsoft-edge: protocol, or a shortcut launches a browser through a wrapper, script, or altered target.

The displayed name or icon is not proof that the Edge executable itself has been replaced. A shortcut titled “Edge.exe” can point to the wrong program, include a URL argument, or invoke another handler. Conversely, a link from Windows Search or a taskbar news or weather feature may be intentionally routed to Edge even when every normal web link uses Firefox.

How Windows chooses a browser

Windows stores associations at several layers. The HTTP and HTTPS protocols, along with file types such as .htm and .html, can be assigned to a browser. Microsoft’s default-app settings also allow choices by application, protocol, and file type.

Microsoft separately defines microsoft-edge:. Microsoft Learn says this URI scheme launches Microsoft Edge “regardless of the user’s default browser setting.” Mozilla describes the practical effect: Windows Search results and taskbar features linking to news, weather, and other online resources can use a Microsoft protocol that always launches Edge, even when Firefox is the default.

That distinction explains why changing Firefox’s default setting can fix links from one application while having no effect on a Windows widget. It also explains why seeing Firefox after selecting an Edge-labelled shortcut does not automatically indicate malware: the shortcut may simply be passing a normal web URL to Windows, which then follows Firefox’s default association.

  1. Open a neutral application such as a text editor or an email message containing a known https:// address. Select the link. If it opens Firefox, Firefox is probably the HTTP/HTTPS default.
  2. Repeat the test from the original source: Windows Search, a taskbar news or weather panel, Outlook, Teams, a desktop shortcut, or another work application.
  3. Compare the results. A normal web link and a Windows feature can use different protocols even when they display similar text.
  4. On a managed work computer, note whether the behavior changes after sign-in or a restart. That pattern can indicate an organization policy rather than a local preference.

A predictable difference between sources is usually configuration, not an executable infection. Crashes, repeated redirects, unknown pages, or a shortcut whose target changes are abnormal and deserve the repair and security checks described below.

Set Firefox as the default for ordinary links

Use Windows’ current default-app controls rather than changing registry entries. The exact page is available in Windows 10 and Windows 11 through the Settings app, although labels can vary slightly by release.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.
  2. Select Firefox from the application list.
  3. Check the entries for HTTP and HTTPS. Select Firefox for each one if it is not already selected.
  4. Check .htm and .html and assign them to Firefox if you want local web documents to use it as well.
  5. Test a fresh link from the neutral application used in the previous section. Close and reopen the source application if it cached an earlier browser choice.

Changing these associations controls ordinary web protocols. It does not promise to redirect a link explicitly using microsoft-edge:, because that link is asking Windows for Edge by design.

Why some links still open Edge with Firefox selected

Windows Search and taskbar web features

Search results and taskbar features that present online news, weather, or related content may use microsoft-edge:. Their behavior is controlled by the feature’s link and Windows integration, not by the browser association shown for HTTPS. Firefox can remain the default for every ordinary website while these specific links continue to start Edge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Organization-managed associations

Microsoft documents deployment of an association file that can assign Edge to HTML, HTTP, HTTPS, and PDF identifiers. On a company-managed computer, an administrator can reapply those assignments at sign-in, startup, or policy refresh. If Firefox repeatedly loses its association, ask your IT administrator whether a default-association policy is being enforced instead of repeatedly changing the same settings.

Application-specific behavior

Some applications choose a browser or protocol themselves. Outlook, Teams, security software, and custom enterprise tools can pass a URL through their own handler. Test the same address from a neutral application before concluding that Windows has ignored your default.

Inspect an Edge-labelled shortcut

If the problem starts from a desktop, Start-menu, taskbar, or file shortcut named “Edge.exe,” inspect the shortcut rather than trusting its label or icon.

  1. Right-click the shortcut and choose Properties.
  2. On the Shortcut tab, read the complete Target field. Confirm that it points to the expected Microsoft Edge installation executable, not to a browser you did not choose, a script, a batch file, or an unfamiliar directory.
  3. Check Start in for a sensible application folder. An empty or unusual value is not automatically malicious, but it can help explain inconsistent launches.
  4. Look for arguments after the executable path. A URL, protocol prefix, or wrapper program may be responsible for what opens next.
  5. Use Apply only after correcting a clearly wrong target, then test the shortcut again. If the target changes back, another installer, script, or policy may be rewriting it.

Do not delete registry keys or system files solely because an icon looks wrong. A shortcut is a small text-based launcher; its name can be changed independently of the program it invokes.

Separate normal routing from abnormal behavior

Observed symptom Likely routing mechanism Best first action
Every ordinary website opens Firefox Firefox owns HTTP/HTTPS Confirm Firefox’s default-app entries; no repair is needed if routing is predictable.
Only Windows Search or taskbar web cards open Edge microsoft-edge: is explicitly requesting Edge Treat it as Edge-specific behavior; changing HTTP/HTTPS will not necessarily alter it.
Firefox’s association returns to Edge after a work login or restart Organization policy or a deployed association file Contact the administrator and request the enforced association be reviewed.
An Edge-labelled shortcut opens an unexpected browser or program Incorrect Target, arguments, wrapper, or altered shortcut Inspect Properties and verify the executable path and arguments.
Edge crashes, closes, redirects, or displays unsolicited pages Damaged installation or possible unwanted software Repair Edge and run a malware scan; investigate the shortcut and installed extensions.

Repair Edge only when its behavior is genuinely abnormal

A Windows feature intentionally opening Edge is not, by itself, evidence of infection. Use repair when Edge will not open, closes unexpectedly, or behaves differently from the predictable protocol pattern.

  1. Restart Windows and reproduce the issue once. A restart can clear a stuck process or incomplete update.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find Microsoft Edge, open its menu, and choose Modify.
  4. In the Edge setup dialog, choose Repair and follow the prompts. Microsoft’s repair process may require an internet connection and should preserve normal browser data, but close Edge and other browsers before starting.
  5. After repair, test a normal https:// link and the original problematic source separately.
  6. If pages still redirect, shortcuts change, or unknown tabs appear, run a full scan with your installed security software and review recently installed applications, browser extensions, and startup entries.

A scan is appropriate for unsolicited or deceptive behavior, not merely because Firefox opens a link. Avoid generic registry cleaners or deleting browser and Windows registry keys without a specific diagnosis; those actions can damage associations and make recovery harder.

A practical decision path

  • Normal link, Firefox opens: verify the Firefox entries for HTTP, HTTPS, .htm, and .html; the result is normally correct.
  • Windows feature, Edge opens: identify the feature as an Edge-specific launcher using microsoft-edge:; ordinary default-browser changes are not expected to override it.
  • Defaults revert on a work device: treat policy as the control layer and involve IT rather than repeatedly resetting local settings.
  • Shortcut target is wrong: correct or recreate the shortcut after verifying the executable and arguments.
  • Crashes, redirects, or unsolicited pages: restart, repair Edge, and scan for malware; preserve the shortcut details if you need to show an administrator or security technician what changed.

What to retain about Edge and Firefox links

HTTP and HTTPS are default-browser associations. microsoft-edge: is an Edge-specific launcher. Windows allows defaults by application, protocol, and file type, while organizations can deploy policy-controlled assignments for HTML, HTTP/HTTPS, and PDF. Those four facts account for most apparent contradictions between Firefox being selected and Edge still appearing.
