The occasional full charge helps the iPhone maintain an accurate estimate of its battery’s state of charge; it does not, by itself, mean the setting is broken.
Why an 80% Charge Limit can still reach 100%
Apple’s Charge Limit guidance says an iPhone with a limit below 100% will occasionally charge fully to maintain accurate battery state-of-charge estimates. Apple does not specify how often this happens.

The Charge Limit is therefore a usual charging target, not a guarantee that the battery will never reach 100%. With the limit set, iPhone normally charges to within a few percentage points of the selected level and stops. If the battery level falls by more than 5% while the phone remains connected to power, charging resumes.

Which iPhones have Charge Limit?
The selectable Charge Limit is available on iPhone 15 models and later. On those phones, open Settings > Battery > Charging to check or change it. Available limits run from 80% to 100% in 5% increments.

Charge Limit and Optimized Battery Charging are different
These settings address charging differently. Charge Limit sets the level the phone normally targets; Optimized Battery Charging delays when charging completes based on a learned routine.

What to check if charging behavior seems unexpected
- Confirm the model and setting. On an iPhone 15 or later, go to Settings > Battery > Charging and make sure the selected limit is still 80%. An occasional rise to 100% is the documented calibration behavior.
- Distinguish a full charge from a charge that stops below 80%. Apple says iOS may limit charging above 80% if the battery gets warmer than its recommended temperature. Charging can resume after the battery returns to its normal operating range.
- Check the device-specific guidance. If your model’s settings or behavior do not match the instructions, consult Apple’s current support information for your iPhone and iOS version.
Apple separately advises avoiding use or charging in ambient temperatures above 35°C (95°F), because that can permanently reduce battery lifespan. That is battery-care guidance, not Apple’s explanation for the occasional full charge with a lower limit.
What the battery-longevity figures mean
Apple’s battery documentation says iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles, while iPhone 15 models are designed to retain 80% after 1,000 complete charge cycles, under ideal conditions. These are design targets, not guarantees of real-world capacity or a promised lifespan; actual capacity depends on how the phone is used and charged.
