A photo uploaded directly to a post and a preview generated from a webpage link are different formats. For a link preview, check the page’s X card metadata—especially twitter:card—and whether the image it names can be fetched. Those checks can help identify a problem, but they cannot force X to display a large image: X controls the final rendering.
First, tell a link preview from an uploaded photo
If you pasted a webpage URL into a post, X is generating a link preview from that page. Its layout depends on the page’s card metadata and how X fetches and renders the page.

If you attached a photo to the post, that is uploaded media, not a webpage card. X says a single attached photo with an aspect ratio between 2:1 and 3:4 displays in full; that guidance does not promise a large image for a shared link. See X’s photo and GIF posting help.
Why a webpage link may show a summary card
A page’s metadata describes the card format it requests. A current third-party technical guide says twitter:card values summary and summary_large_image correspond to smaller and large-image layouts, respectively. If a page requests the summary format, or its intended image is missing or inaccessible, those are sensible items to investigate.

They are troubleshooting checks, not a guarantee. X determines whether and how it renders a card, and the available guidance does not establish a tag, image dimension, or other setting that will force a large preview. The metadata explanation is from ToolMint’s guide, updated August 21, 2026: Twitter Cards (X Cards): Meta Tags, Examples & Troubleshooting.
How to troubleshoot a link preview
- Confirm what you posted. If the post contains a webpage URL, inspect the page’s card metadata. If you uploaded a photo, troubleshoot the uploaded media instead; the photo display guidance is not a link-card rule.
- Inspect the page’s returned metadata. Look for
twitter:card. The ToolMint guide associatessummary_large_imagewith a large-image card andsummarywith a smaller summary card. - Check the intended image reference and access. Verify that the page’s metadata points to the image you expect and that the image can be fetched. Without inspecting the specific URL and its response, it is not possible to say which issue—if any—is causing its preview.
- Test the exact URL in X after changes. A metadata edit or delivery fix does not establish what X will show until the URL is rendered there. X controls fetching and presentation.
When the problem is an uploaded photo or posting failure
For an uploaded image that will not load, X Ads help suggests checking whether AdBlock is installed and disabling it on X’s domain before trying again. This advice concerns photo-upload trouble; it is not a general fix for a summary-style link preview. See X’s Promoted Ads FAQ.

For a general failure to post, X recommends updating the browser or official app. That may help with posting problems, but it does not explain why an otherwise working webpage link renders as a summary card. See X’s Help with Posting.

An ordinary shared URL, a photo attached to a post, and a paid Website Card ad are separate formats. X Ads documentation describes Website Cards as advertising creative with a compact image and a call-to-action button; that ad format does not establish how an organic link preview will appear. See X’s website traffic campaign guidance.
