Test each platform with its own preview workflow: use LinkedIn’s Post Inspector, Facebook’s Sharing Debugger, and X’s post composer. If a card shows an old image, the platform may be using a cached scrape. Update the page’s metadata first, then request a fresh fetch where the platform offers one and check the preview again before posting.
What link-preview testing can—and cannot—confirm
Social cards typically draw on page metadata such as the Open Graph title, description, and image. A preview tool can help diagnose what a platform fetches from a URL, but a third-party renderer is only an approximation; it cannot guarantee that Facebook, LinkedIn, and X will display identical cards. The page must be publicly fetchable and serve the intended metadata before testing. If a crawler cannot access the page, its result cannot represent the intended card. A successful check on one service also does not prove that another platform has re-fetched the URL.
Prepare the page before checking a preview
- Publish the intended page and metadata. Make sure the page at the URL is live and its title, description, and preview image are the ones you want shared.
- Use the final URL. Check the same address you plan to share; a different URL may have a separate preview cache.
- Run each platform’s check separately. A refresh or preview on one platform does not confirm the state of another platform’s cache.
How to test a LinkedIn link preview
- Open LinkedIn’s Post Inspector.
- Enter the URL you intend to share and inspect the preview information.
- If it shows old information, use the inspector to refresh the URL preview, then check the result before creating a new post.
LinkedIn says refreshing affects preview information for new posts that include the URL. Existing posts keep their existing preview. LinkedIn Help: Use Post Inspector to refresh URL.

How to test a Facebook link preview
- Open Meta’s Sharing Debugger.
- Enter the page URL and inspect the fetched preview.
- If the result is stale, use the “Scrape Again” control described by the cross-platform checker, then inspect the refreshed result. The current label and behavior should be confirmed in the tool itself, as Meta’s underlying help guidance was not available here.
Check Facebook independently even if the same URL looks right in LinkedIn or a third-party preview renderer.
How to check a link preview on X
The available guidance reports that X’s standalone Card Validator has been retired, but this is secondary reporting rather than an official current X confirmation. The suggested check is to compose a post with the URL and inspect the card shown in the composer before publishing. Check current X Help for the latest workflow, especially if you need a refresh function; its availability is not established here.

Why a preview still shows an old image
Platforms can cache information fetched during an earlier scrape. LinkedIn explicitly documents this for previously shared URLs. After changing the page, use the platform’s refresh workflow if available and retest that platform. Do not assume the refresh changes existing posts: LinkedIn says it does not.
If the updated image or text is still absent, first confirm that the live page at the exact shared URL now contains the intended metadata and can be fetched publicly. Then repeat the relevant platform check. A general-purpose preview tool can help inspect metadata, but its rendering is not proof of what a platform will show.

- The preview shows an old image: update the live page, then request a fresh scrape in the platform’s tool where available. LinkedIn’s refresh applies to new posts, not existing ones.
- One platform looks right but another does not: test the second platform directly; results are not interchangeable.
- The preview is missing or incomplete: confirm the page is publicly fetchable and that the intended metadata is present at the URL being tested.
- You cannot find a refresh control on X: the current availability of a dedicated refresh workflow is not established by the available official guidance; inspect the composer preview and consult current X Help.
