How to Rotate a YouTube 24/7 Playlist at IST Midnight with Windows Task Scheduler

You can schedule a Windows task to run at midnight IST, but Task Scheduler only starts a program or script; it does not switch a playlist inside a YouTube encoder by itself. First set the Windows computer to India Standard Time, then schedule a tested encoder action for 00:00 local time. Whether the video can change without interrupting the live stream depends on the encoder and its controls.

Choose what “rotate” means before scheduling

There are two different ways to change what viewers see at midnight. The first is to switch the media source while the encoder stays connected to the same live stream. The second is to stop or end the current stream, then start another. Windows can trigger an action at a chosen time, but it cannot make an encoder support the first method.

Rotation behavior What the task needs to do What to verify first
Change media within one active stream Invoke a control or script that the selected encoder supports for changing its active media source. Confirm that the encoder can switch media without stopping its YouTube output. The YouTube encoder guidance cited here describes starting and ending a stream; it does not establish a general in-session playlist-switch method.
End one stream and start another Run a tested action that stops or ends the current stream and starts the next one. Check what viewers experience, whether YouTube creates a separate live event or archive, and whether the chosen encoder can perform both actions from the scheduled task’s account and session.

If a brief interruption or a separate live event is unacceptable, do not assume that a scheduled stop-and-start is equivalent to an in-session media change. Test the exact encoder, playlist, and task configuration before relying on it unattended.

Set Windows to IST and verify the clock

  1. Open the time settings. In Windows, go to Settings → Time & language → Date & time.
  2. Set the time zone. Select the India time zone, shown in Windows as (UTC+05:30) Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, and confirm that the displayed local time is correct. If your Windows edition presents different labels, verify the selected zone and displayed clock rather than relying on the label alone.
  3. Keep the computer’s clock reliable. Check the displayed time again before the first scheduled transition. The daily task time is interpreted as local time; the documented schtasks daily schedule does not provide a separate time-zone setting for an IST trigger on a computer configured to another zone.

Prepare YouTube and the encoder

  1. Set up the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings, then make sure the encoder can connect and send a preview before scheduling any transition.
  2. Protect the stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as credential-like: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not put the key in a shared script, task name, log, or other place where an unintended user can read it. YouTube says custom stream keys can be reused and can be reset in Live Control Room; if you reset one, update the encoder before the next broadcast.
  3. Prepare the next media in the encoder. Set up the next video or playlist using the encoder’s own supported controls. If you intend to switch media within the same live session, identify the encoder’s documented control for that action and test it while connected. Do not substitute a generic Task Scheduler action for an encoder feature that may not exist.
  4. Check rights and YouTube requirements. Use video and audio you have the rights to stream, including any music, images, and third-party footage. A scheduled transition does not make copyrighted or otherwise ineligible material permissible, nor does it ensure that a channel or stream meets YouTube’s live-streaming or monetization rules. Review the rules that apply to your channel and content before leaving a stream unattended.

Create a daily midnight task in Windows Task Scheduler

  1. Open Task Scheduler. Search Windows for Task Scheduler and launch it. Choose Create Task if you need to set the task’s user and session behavior; the simpler basic wizard may omit settings you need to test.
  2. Name the task and select its account. Give it a recognizable name, such as YouTube midnight rotation, and choose the Windows account that has access to the encoder and any files or scripts the action needs.
  3. Add a daily trigger. On the Triggers tab, choose New…, set Begin the task to On a schedule, select Daily, and set the start time to 12:00:00 AM (00:00). Confirm that the recurrence is every 1 day, then save the trigger. Since Task Scheduler uses the host’s local time, this targets IST midnight only while Windows is set to IST and its clock is correct.
  4. Choose the action the encoder actually supports. On the Actions tab, choose New… → Start a program. Select the tested executable or a script that performs the encoder-specific change. Task Scheduler’s role is to launch that action; it does not supply a universal playlist-switch command. If a script is involved, confirm that its account, file paths, permissions, and encoder controls all work in the session in which the task will run.
  5. Review Conditions and Settings. Check that conditions such as power, idle state, or network availability will not prevent the task from running at midnight. Decide how the task should behave if a previous run is still active or if a run is missed, based on the encoder action you tested. Avoid assuming a missed trigger will safely catch up by itself.
  6. Save and test with the intended session configuration. Run the action manually first. Then test the saved task using the same Windows account and logon conditions you intend to use overnight. Microsoft documents an interactive-only task setting that runs only while that user is logged on; a GUI encoder may behave differently in an unattended session, so confirm the actual setup rather than assuming it will.

For administrators who prefer the command line, Microsoft’s schtasks interface supports a daily schedule with a start time in 24-hour HH:mm format. For example, the scheduling portion is /sc daily /st 00:00. A complete task also needs a valid action and task name; the schedule flags alone do not define how an encoder changes its media.

Test the midnight transition and monitor the result

  1. Perform a manual rehearsal. Run the intended switch or stop-and-start action before the scheduled date. Check both the encoder and the YouTube Live Control Room preview.
  2. Watch picture and sound through the transition. Confirm the expected next video plays, audio is present, and the live output behaves as intended. YouTube’s encoder tips recommend testing, previewing, and monitoring stream quality.
  3. Check the event and archive behavior. If your method ends one stream and starts another, inspect YouTube’s live event and archive results rather than assuming the second event continues the first. YouTube Help states that “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That statement applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not establish archive behavior for one continuous stream that exceeds 12 hours.
  4. Rehearse a failure case. Test what happens if the encoder is closed, the network drops, or the task runs while the intended user is logged off. Decide how you will detect a missed transition and recover it without accidentally ending or duplicating the wrong live event.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • The change happens at the wrong hour: Check the Windows time zone and displayed clock, then confirm the trigger is set to 00:00 local time. A task scheduled on a computer in another zone does not become an IST task merely because the desired time is described as IST.
  • The task says it ran, but the video did not change: Task Scheduler may have launched successfully while the encoder ignored, rejected, or could not perform the requested media change. Test the encoder control separately and inspect the task’s action, account, working paths, permissions, and result.
  • The encoder works manually but not overnight: Compare the account and logon session used in the manual test with the task’s settings. Interactive-only behavior depends on the user being logged on, and a GUI encoder should be tested in the actual unattended configuration.
  • The stream ends instead of switching videos: The selected action may be stopping encoder output rather than changing a media source. Review the encoder’s documented control and test whether it can switch sources in the active session; otherwise treat the workflow as ending one stream and starting another.
  • The new stream does not connect: Check the encoder’s server URL and current stream key in YouTube Live Control Room. If the key was reset, replace the old key in the encoder. Verify the connection and preview manually before the next scheduled attempt.
  • The task starts but cannot find its script or media: Check that the task’s account can access the files and use stable, correct paths. A task running under a different account or session may not have the same access as an interactive desktop session.
