A blank wkhtmltoimage image usually means the page did not produce visible content under the converter’s current loading, rendering, resource-access, or output settings. Diagnose those layers in order: confirm the input page works, check JavaScript and timing, inspect local and network resources, then rule out crop and viewport settings. No single option fixes every blank capture.
First, identify which part of the render is failing
wkhtmltoimage converts an HTML page supplied as a file or URL into an image. A blank result can arise before content is rendered, while scripts are creating it, when referenced resources cannot be read, or when output settings exclude the content. The command-line options expose controls for these areas, but an option such as ignoring load errors does not repair a failed request. Open the same URL or local HTML file in a current browser. Check whether it shows the page you expect, not a redirect, sign-in screen, access-denied page, interstitial, or empty document. For remote pages, verify that the machine running the converter can reach the URL and that any required authentication or proxy access is available there.

A 2015 issue report describes a remote-page case in which the result was an interstitial or redirect-related page rather than the expected content; the reporter suspected a JavaScript redirect. It is an example of an upstream navigation problem, not proof that redirects explain every blank image. Adding a delay did not resolve that reported case. Issue #2346
2. Check JavaScript and when the page becomes visible
If the page creates or reveals content after its initial HTML loads, verify that JavaScript is enabled. The CLI documents --enable-javascript and --disable-javascript; enabling it is relevant when scripts build the content, while disabling it can help isolate whether scripts are involved.
For delayed content, try a measured wait with --javascript-delay <msec>. If the page sets a known window status after it is ready, --window-status <value> can wait for that value instead. For example, if the page sets window.status = 'ready' when its content is complete, use --window-status ready. Enable JavaScript debugging when investigating script errors. These controls are documented in the CLI manual and settings reference; neither guarantees that an incompatible script or page will render successfully.

3. Check local files and resource permissions
For a local HTML file, inspect the paths and permissions for linked images, stylesheets, fonts, and scripts. Relative paths that work in a browser may still fail if the converter is run from a different working directory or under a different account. The local-file-access policy can also block a file even when its path exists.
The CLI provides --enable-local-file-access and the narrower --allow <path> option. Prefer allowing only the directory the input needs rather than broad local access. The manual documents these settings: wkhtmltoimage options.
A 2019 issue report for wkhtmltoimage 0.12.5 on OS X Sierra and CentOS 7 shows a command using disabled local-file access while the HTML referenced an image. Its log included “Warning: Blocked access to file” and a failed about:blank load. Treat it as a specific example to check access policy and paths, not as evidence that every missing image makes the whole page blank. Issue #4408

4. Read load errors; distinguish page failures from media failures
Review the converter’s warnings and errors. Check that page and resource URLs resolve, respond successfully, and are reachable from the host running the command. Consider whether a resource requires authentication or a proxy that is not available to the converter.
The CLI has separate handling controls for page-load and media-load failures. The settings documentation describes abort, skip, and ignore behaviors for failed objects. In particular, ignore means the converter tries to add the object; it does not make an inaccessible image, stylesheet, or script load. A reporter in issue #4408 says ignore/skip options did not prevent a ProtocolUnknownError in that setup. That report illustrates a failure mode, not a universal diagnosis.
5. Rule out width, height, cropping, and zoom
Once loading and rendering have been checked, test whether the expected content is outside the selected output area. Inspect --width, --height, --crop-x, --crop-y, crop width and height, and zoom settings. Try a larger uncropped capture as a diagnostic. The manual notes that width is a guide unless smart width is disabled; dimensions and crop settings do not establish the cause by themselves, but can distinguish a framing problem from missing content.

6. Verify image loading and output format
If images are part of the expected result, confirm that image loading is enabled. Check that the requested output format is supported by the installed build, and try another documented format if needed. The CLI manual lists output formats and quality settings; the project settings reference covers image loading and formats: manual and settings.
7. Decide whether the page exceeds the renderer’s limits
If the same input works in a current browser but remains blank or incomplete after the relevant loading, script, and access checks, the page may depend on browser features or JavaScript behavior that this renderer does not handle as required. The upstream GitHub repository is archived and read-only. Its issue index includes reports titled “HTML page turns completely white/empty” and “Vanilla Javascript won’t render”; issue titles are user reports, not official root-cause findings or guaranteed fixes. - Does the same URL or file show the intended page in a current browser?
- Is JavaScript enabled, and does the page need a delay or a known window status before its content appears?
- Can the converter read every required local file, using only the access it needs?
- Do logs show page-load or media-load failures, and are the affected URLs reachable from the converter host?
- Does a larger, uncropped output show content that the current geometry hides?
- Are image loading and the selected output format appropriate for the installed build?
- Does the page rely on behavior the archived project may not support?
Frequently Asked Questions
Does `–load-error-handling ignore` fix a missing image or stylesheet?
No. It changes how a failed object is handled; it does not restore the resource or guarantee a complete render.
Is a longer JavaScript delay always the answer to a blank image?
No. A delay can help when content appears after a wait, but it will not fix every navigation, script, or compatibility failure.
