The error usually means your installed wkhtmltopdf build needs X11, even though the upstream project describes headless operation. Check whether the binary was built with patched Qt; if not, use a compatible package for your Linux release or test it under a virtual X server such as Xvfb. The right fix depends on the package and runtime, so there is no safe one-size-fits-all install command.
What the error means
wkhtmltopdf uses Qt and WebKit to render HTML as PDF. The upstream project says its tools can run headlessly without a display service, but that does not describe every packaged build. Ubuntu’s Jammy manual says its unpatched-Qt build lacks the ability to run without X11. The error is therefore a sign to check the particular binary, not proof that Linux or wkhtmltopdf always requires a physical display.

Record your Linux distribution and release, CPU architecture, and how the binary was installed (distribution package, upstream package, container image, or another source).

Confirm the same details for the service or container that runs the command. A command that works in an interactive shell may fail under a service with a different environment.

Identify any required output features, such as headers, footers, or outlines, before changing builds. Patched and unpatched builds do not necessarily provide the same behavior.

Choose a fix
Install a compatible patched-Qt build
If the current build lacks patched Qt and the service must run without a display, the usual solution is a package appropriate to your distribution release and architecture. Check dependencies before replacing the binary. The project’s downloads page lists distribution-specific packages and warns against assuming a generic Linux binary will work everywhere. Its page describes stable series 0.12.6 as released June 11, 2020; that is dated project information, not confirmation of the latest release available in October 2026.
Do not copy an installation command for a different distribution or release. Verify the package’s origin, compatibility, and dependencies for your system first.

Try a virtual X server
If replacing the build is impractical, test it under a virtual X server such as xvfb-run in the same service or container context where the failure occurs. This is a configuration workaround; it does not mean a physical display is required. Validate the resulting PDF and any features your workflow depends on.

Consider another renderer
For a new system, ongoing maintenance, or modern JavaScript-heavy pages, compare alternatives rather than investing further in an older Qt/WebKit stack. The project suggests WeasyPrint or Prince for controlled report generation and Puppeteer for JavaScript-heavy sites. Check current maintenance and whether the candidate supports your HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PDF requirements before migrating.

Security and deployment considerations
HTML rendering is security-sensitive. The wkhtmltopdf project warns against using untrusted HTML or JavaScript without sanitization, noting that it can enable complete server takeover. Sanitize user-supplied content and consider process confinement such as AppArmor or SELinux. Keep the renderer isolated from secrets and unnecessary network or filesystem access where your deployment permits.
