To render Hindi correctly with wkhtmltoimage on Ubuntu, install a Devanagari-capable font in the same runtime that runs the renderer, name that font in the HTML or CSS, then test the output with the exact binary and build you deploy. Hindi is a language; Devanagari is the script whose glyph coverage and shaping your font must support.
How Hindi font selection works in wkhtmltoimage
wkhtmltoimage converts HTML to an image. Its documented options include a user stylesheet and input encoding, but there is no Hindi-specific font selector; choose a font through the page’s CSS. The renderer must also be able to discover that font through the system font configuration. The project’s runtime guidance notes that installed fonts and fontconfig/FreeType still matter, including with static Qt builds. wkhtmltopdf project downloads and runtime guidance and the Ubuntu Noble wkhtmltoimage manual describe the relevant behavior.

This means a font visible in your desktop browser is not necessarily available to a container, worker, or serverless runtime that launches wkhtmltoimage. Install and verify it in that environment.

Noto Sans Devanagari and Lohit Devanagari are candidate families, but package names and availability vary by Ubuntu release. Check the package records for the exact release and image you deploy before using an apt command; do not assume an old package name applies to current Ubuntu. - Identify the Ubuntu release and the environment that actually runs
wkhtmltoimage(for example, the container image or worker). - Find an available package providing a Devanagari font family such as Noto Sans Devanagari or Lohit Devanagari for that release.
- Install the package in that runtime, not only on your development machine.
- Confirm the installed family is discoverable by the runtime’s font configuration, then run a test capture with the same
wkhtmltoimageexecutable and build used in production.
Because package availability has not been established here for every Ubuntu release, no copy-paste installation command is given. Use the package name confirmed for your release.
Declare the font in HTML or CSS
Name the installed family explicitly and provide fallbacks. For example, if the selected family is Noto Sans Devanagari:

The lang attribute identifies the document language, and the UTF-8 declaration helps ensure the HTML is interpreted with the intended encoding; neither substitutes for having a suitable font in the renderer’s runtime. You can put the CSS in the page or supply a user stylesheet, which wkhtmltoimage documents as an option.

Use a representative sample from the page, not only a string of isolated characters. Include independent vowels, consonant-vowel combinations, conjuncts, vowel marks and punctuation that the page uses. Compare the captured image with a known-correct rendering and check that both the characters and their joining or placement look right.

Keep the Ubuntu release, wkhtmltoimage --version output, package or build source, and a minimal HTML sample with the test result. The wkhtmltopdf project identifies 0.12.6 as its stable series and dates that release to June 11, 2020; Ubuntu Noble’s manual describes package version 0.12.6-2build2. Those details do not identify every user’s binary, so verify your own executable and build. Project release information
Troubleshoot missing or malformed Hindi text
Boxes or missing characters
This usually points first to font coverage or font discovery. Check that a Devanagari-capable family is installed in the same runtime as the renderer, that your CSS family name matches the installed family, and that the renderer can access the system’s font configuration.

Characters appear, but vowel marks or conjuncts are wrong
A font being present does not guarantee correct shaping in every renderer build. Test the exact Ubuntu binary with the affected sample. A wkhtmltopdf issue filed on February 9, 2021 reported a short-i shaping problem with Noto Sans Devanagari in wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 with patched Qt on Windows 10. It is a report about a particular build and case, not evidence that all Ubuntu builds or Hindi text fail. wkhtmltopdf issue tracker
If a minimal sample remains malformed, compare its output with a current browser renderer and record the build details and sample when investigating the difference. Do not assume changing fonts alone will fix a shaping defect.

Works locally, fails in production
Compare the font installation and font discovery in the local and production runtimes. A developer workstation may have the font even when the deployed container, worker or serverless bundle does not.
