QSSR is an optional AI-upscaling graphics mode for standard PS5, not a guaranteed visual upgrade in every scene. If a supported game looks blurry or shimmery with QSSR enabled, compare it against the game’s other graphics options in the same scene and keep the mode that looks better to you. Sony has not published a universal cause or fix for these artifacts.
First, check whether you mean QSSR or PSSR
Sony announced QSSR on October 1, 2026, as a faster tier of AI upscaling for the standard PS5. It is distinct from PSSR, Sony’s AI-upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option; its announcement does not provide a complete compatibility list. The names matter for troubleshooting: PS5 Pro’s system-level “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting is not a QSSR control for standard PS5.
Why might QSSR look blurry or shimmery?
Sony and the developers describe QSSR’s intended benefits as improved image detail, clarity and stability. Those are design goals, not a guarantee that every scene will look better to every player. Upscaling and image reconstruction can affect how fine details and motion appear, so it is reasonable to test whether the artifact changes with the graphics option. But Sony’s announcements do not diagnose the cause of a particular player’s blur or shimmer, and the available evidence does not establish that QSSR is inherently blurry.

Insomniac Games’ Mike Fitzgerald said QSSR adds “pixel-level clarity and stability” in Marvel’s Wolverine. Sucker Punch Productions’ Jasmin Patry described improved fine-detail resolution and temporal stability in Ghost of Yōtei. These are developer descriptions of the intended effect, not independent test results or a promise about every scene.
How to check whether QSSR is causing the change
- Confirm the console and game. Check whether you have a standard PS5 with QSSR offered in a supported game, or a PS5 Pro using PSSR.
- Update the game and inspect its graphics options. Sony says the first QSSR games were patched to offer it. Menu labels and paths can vary by game; Sony has not specified one universal route.
- Compare options in the same scene. Toggle QSSR or switch between the available graphics modes while keeping the view and motion as similar as possible. Notice whether the blur or shimmer changes when the option changes. This is a practical comparison, not a formal Sony test procedure.
- Keep the option that looks best to you. QSSR is an additional graphics option, so there is no reason to leave it enabled if another available mode looks clearer in the scenes you care about.
If you are using a PS5 Pro
For supported PS5 Pro games, Sony offers a separate system setting called “Enhance PSSR Image Quality.” Sony says its effect varies by title and advises turning it off if unexpected visual effects occur. Compare that setting on and off in the affected game; do not look for it as a QSSR setting on standard PS5. Sony’s upgraded PSSR announcement and the PS5 Pro feature page describe this feature and its supported-title caveat.

If the artifact remains, gather details before changing hardware
If the problem does not track with QSSR or the other graphics mode, record the game, console model, selected graphics option and scene. Also check whether the problem appears in a screenshot or only on the display. Those details help narrow down what to investigate next, but Sony’s QSSR information does not identify display settings, cables or hardware as established causes or fixes for QSSR-related blur or shimmer. The separate guidance on PS5 Pro troubleshooting includes an adjacent PS4 image-quality feature; that is not QSSR troubleshooting.
