How do I check whether a Switch game works on Switch 2?
- Identify the exact product. Check whether the listing is the original Nintendo Switch game, a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, or a separate upgrade pack. Nintendo says a Switch 2 Edition includes the original game and its upgrade pack. Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information explains that compatible physical and digital Switch games can be played on Switch 2, while some titles may not be supported or fully compatible.
- Read the title-specific compatibility notes. Do not treat general compatibility as a guarantee for every game or feature. Check Nintendo’s current compatibility details for the exact title before buying. Nintendo Support also says: “Some Nintendo Switch games also offer free updates or paid upgrades that bring additional content or improved performance when the game is played on Nintendo Switch 2.”
- Look for a Switch 2 Edition or upgrade pack. Only select games offer upgrade packs. Check the eShop, Nintendo Store or a retailer selling Nintendo games for the exact title and edition.
- Compare the actual price and terms. Nintendo does not set one universal upgrade price. Packs may add visual improvements, features or modes, and their contents vary by game. Some are available at no additional cost to eligible active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members; check the game-specific terms rather than assuming every pack is included.
- Match the region before checkout. Check the country for your Nintendo Account and eShop, plus the game’s region. Nintendo says pack compatibility depends on the software and recommends buying software and packs intended for the console’s region. Its region guidance for codes and eShop cards notes that eShop cards are region-specific.
- Check setup requirements after purchase. A software update may be required in addition to an upgrade pack. For a separately purchased digital pack, confirm that its virtual game card is loaded on the console you plan to use.
Do I have to buy the game again for Switch 2?
Not necessarily. If you already own a Switch game and Nintendo offers an upgrade pack for it, Nintendo says owners of either a physical or digital copy can buy the pack through eShop, Nintendo Store or a retailer selling Nintendo games. The pack is separate from the base game, so confirm that you own the matching title and edition.

A Switch 2 Edition is another route: it bundles the original game with its upgrade pack. Nintendo says the retail Switch 2 Edition and the same edition assembled with an upgrade pack contain the same content. Compare the bundle’s current price with the cost of buying the original game and pack separately; availability and value depend on the title.

What does a Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack include?
There is no universal set of improvements. Depending on the game, an upgrade pack can bring visual changes, additional features or modes. Read the pack’s own listing to see exactly what it adds and whether it requires the original Switch game.

For a specific example, Nintendo lists the The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack at $9.99 USD. Nintendo says eligible active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can obtain that pack at no additional cost. This is a title-specific price and membership offer, not a standard price for other games. Check Nintendo’s Tears of the Kingdom upgrade pack listing for its current details.
Can I upgrade a physical Switch game?
Yes, if Nintendo offers an upgrade pack for that game. Nintendo says owners of physical and digital versions can purchase an available pack. Keep the original game available when playing; the pack does not replace the base game. Verify the exact title and region on the pack listing, since not every Switch game has an upgrade.

Is a Switch 2 upgrade free with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack?
Only certain upgrade packs are available at no additional cost to active Expansion Pack members. Eligibility and included titles are game-specific, so check Nintendo’s current listing for the particular pack. Do not assume the membership covers every Switch 2 Edition upgrade.

Both formats are options for compatible software; choose based on how you prefer to access and manage the game. Digital games and DLC are treated as virtual game cards. Nintendo says a compatible virtual game card loaded on a console can be played offline and by other users on that console, and describes loading and ejecting cards between linked Switch 2 and Switch systems. Review Nintendo’s virtual game card guidance if you plan to move digital content between consoles.

Before buying a code, DLC or pack, compare its region with the game and the Nintendo Account country/eShop you will use.
