Why does OBS show dropped frames on a 24/7 fireplace stream? Usually, OBS cannot maintain a stable connection to the streaming platform’s ingest server at the bitrate you set. The counter alone does not show whether the problem is your internet connection, Wi-Fi, network route, or ingest server—and it does not mean the fireplace video or OBS installation is faulty.
OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, describes dropped frames as a connection problem. It does not identify a special cause or failure rate for fireplace streams or broadcasts that run 24/7. Diagnose the indicators you actually see rather than assuming the stream’s subject or duration is the cause.

What OBS means by “dropped frames”
OBS says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS discards frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. The “server” is the streaming platform’s ingest endpoint—not a server operated by OBS. As the OBS Help Portal FAQ puts it, “There are no OBS servers – the connection goes directly from your computer to the streaming service.”

Separate connection drops from encoding or viewer problems
Network dropped frames
If OBS’s dropped-frames counter is rising or its connection indicator turns yellow or red, investigate whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate. OBS’s guidance says the platform connection may be unstable or unable to keep up; the counter alone cannot pinpoint the cause.
Encoding overload or choppy output
“Encoding overloaded” and choppy output are a separate branch. OBS’s encoding performance guide attributes these symptoms to system or GPU workload, including rendering and compositing scenes. If those indicators appear, reducing output resolution or frame rate, simplifying scenes and sources, or checking competing GPU use may help. OBS notes that reducing from 60 fps to 30 fps can reduce system work when 60 fps is not working well. Do not treat the network counter alone as proof of encoding overload.

Viewer buffering
A viewer’s buffering is not the same measurement as OBS’s dropped-frames counter. Playback can also depend on the viewer’s device and connection, as well as the platform’s transcoding options. The OBS buffering guidance discusses viewer playback separately; buffering on one viewer’s device does not necessarily prove the broadcaster is dropping frames.

- Confirm what OBS is reporting. Check whether the dropped-frames counter is increasing and whether the connection indicator is yellow or red. Note the time, how often the drops occur, and any disconnections. If the issue is choppy output or an encoding-overloaded message instead, follow the performance branch below.
- Compare bitrate with sustainable upload capacity. OBS recommends lowering video bitrate to suit stable upload speed and the platform’s limits. Its guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a good starting point—not a guarantee. A speed-test result is not necessarily the upload speed your connection can sustain continuously, so leave room for variation and other household traffic.
- Test the route to the destination. Try a different ingest server if the platform offers one. A brief test on another streaming service can help show whether the issue appears service-specific, but it will not fix a problem isolated to one service. For Twitch users on Windows, OBS’s guide points to TwitchTest for comparing server quality.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. Use this as a diagnostic as well as a possible lasting improvement. Ethernet cannot resolve congestion at your ISP or a poor route farther upstream.
- Check local network software and hardware. OBS lists firewalls or antivirus software, VPNs, network-prioritization utilities and outdated network drivers as possible contributors. Modems, routers, cables, network cards, switches and extenders can also be involved. Where practical, change one thing at a time. If you temporarily disable security software to test, restore it afterward and consider an OBS exception if indicated.
- Try OBS network options cautiously. On Windows, OBS lists Network Optimizations and TCP pacing as options some users report can help; it also advises leaving Bind to IP set to Default. You can test IPv4 Only, but return to the default IPv4/IPv6 setting if it makes no difference. Dynamic bitrate adjustment (Beta in the guide) can lower bitrate during congestion; it is a workaround, not a fix, and may reduce stream quality.
- If the problem persists, contact your ISP with evidence. Keep OBS logs and timestamps and describe when the drops occur. Congestion or route-side changes may be outside your control; OBS recommends contacting your ISP if its troubleshooting checks do not resolve the issue.
If the indicators point to rendering or encoding
Use this branch when OBS reports encoding overload or the output is choppy without the connection symptoms being the issue. OBS’s performance guide, dated June 12, 2021, recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate and simplifying scenes or sources. Check whether another application is using significant GPU resources. The precise interface labels can vary by OBS version, so consult the guide alongside the version installed on your computer.
