There is no single “best” low-cost UPS for every Raspberry Pi YouTube stream. The right choice depends on the Pi model, its peripherals, the modem/router load and how long you need backup power. Choose a UPS only after checking the actual equipment and the manufacturer’s runtime rating at a comparable load. A UPS can keep local devices powered during a mains interruption; it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted stream or fix an internet outage.
What a UPS can—and cannot—keep online
A UPS supplies temporary power to equipment connected to it when mains power fails. For a Pi-based stream, that may keep the encoder running, but the stream also needs a working connection to YouTube. If the modem or router loses power, the Pi may stay on while its connection drops. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption could mean a broken stream (YouTube streaming tips).

Backup power does not prevent an ISP outage, a failed line or other external network interruption. Treat power continuity and internet continuity as separate dependencies.
Start with the Pi’s power requirement
Use the recommended supply for the exact Raspberry Pi model, and account for attached peripherals when choosing backup equipment. Raspberry Pi documentation recommends these supplies:

These model-specific figures are documented by Raspberry Pi and its power-supply documentation. They are not proof that the Pi draws that much continuously while streaming. Peripherals and the way you power the board also matter, so verify connector and output compatibility rather than choosing by a headline wattage alone.
How to choose a low-cost UPS in India
- List every device that must remain on. Include the Pi and the modem/router, plus any other essential network equipment. If a device is not backed up, it may still interrupt the stream.
- Check power and connector compatibility. Compare the Pi’s recommended supply and each network device’s input requirements with the UPS output. Do not assume that a UPS outlet or USB port matches the voltage, current or connector your equipment needs.
- Decide how much backup time you need. Consider the outages you want to ride through and the total connected load. Neither a capacity label nor the Pi’s recommended supply rating alone establishes runtime.
- Read the manufacturer’s runtime information for a comparable load. Runtime depends on the specific UPS, battery condition and connected equipment. No particular model, measured load or endurance test is established here, so do not treat an unqualified runtime claim as a guarantee for your setup.
- Compare ownership details, not just the purchase price. Check local India availability and price, battery replacement options and warranty. A category search such as “line-interactive UPS for Raspberry Pi and router” can help you find candidates, but it is not an endorsement; confirm the specifications for your actual devices before buying.
- Test the complete setup before relying on it. Test the stream and connection, then check what happens when mains power is interrupted. Confirm the Pi stays powered, the modem/router remains connected and YouTube continues receiving the stream.
Keep the internet connection ready for streaming
A UPS cannot compensate for insufficient upload bandwidth or an unstable connection. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate and checking the actual upload performance on your connection (streaming tips). That recommendation is headroom, not a universal minimum speed for India.

For one specific reference point, YouTube lists 8 Mbps as the recommended H.264 ingest bitrate for 720p at 30 fps in its encoder settings. This is a recommended stream bitrate, not a claim that every connection can sustain it. Select settings for your content and verified upload performance, and test before a scheduled stream.
Set up the YouTube encoder stream
- Check eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. See YouTube live-streaming eligibility.
- Configure the encoder in YouTube. Create or schedule the live stream, then use the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Enter the stream details in your encoder. Use YouTube’s server URL and stream key, then choose a resolution, frame rate and bitrate your connection can sustain. For example, YouTube’s published H.264 recommendation for 720p at 30 fps is 8 Mbps; check its current encoder settings for the target format.
- Run a test and monitor stream health. Confirm the encoder reaches YouTube, the video and audio are correct, and the connection has upload headroom. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; a working power backup does not validate the network or encoder configuration.
- Test power-failure behavior. With a test stream, check whether the Pi and the network equipment you placed on backup stay powered through a mains interruption. Restore mains and confirm the setup returns to its intended state.
Copyright and ongoing-stream considerations
A powered Pi and a valid stream key do not grant rights to the video or audio being broadcast. Use material you own or have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable rules before running a continuous or repeated programme. Troubleshooting: what to check when the stream drops
- The Pi stays on, but the stream disconnects: Check whether the modem/router also had backup power and whether the internet line remained available. A UPS only helps the devices connected to it; it cannot repair an ISP or line outage.
- The Pi shuts down or behaves unpredictably: Recheck the model’s recommended supply, output voltage/current and connector compatibility. Include attached peripherals in the power plan rather than treating the board’s supply recommendation as a measurement of the whole setup.
- The UPS runs for less time than expected: Runtime varies with the unit, battery condition and total load. Compare the manufacturer’s rating at a load close to yours; a capacity figure alone is not a runtime promise.
- YouTube reports a poor or interrupted stream: Check actual upload performance, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate, and inspect encoder settings and stream health. Power backup cannot resolve an unstable internet connection.
- The encoder does not connect to YouTube: Verify the server URL and stream key in the encoder, confirm channel eligibility, and check that the key belongs to the intended stream. Use YouTube’s encoder setup guidance rather than sharing the key.
