1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAn OBS display of 4K at 60 frames per second does not by itself mean YouTube is receiving a 4K60 stream. It may show the canvas or preview, while the stream output is scaled down—or YouTube may be receiving 4K but offering a 1080p playback option to the viewer. Check OBS’s actual output, then verify the received resolution in YouTube Live Control Room before changing hardware.
What OBS’s 4K60 display does—and does not—tell you
OBS has separate video settings for the base canvas and the output (scaled) resolution. The canvas is the workspace for arranging sources; the encoded output is what the active streaming encoder sends to YouTube. A 3840×2160, 60 fps canvas or preview can therefore coexist with a 1920×1080 stream output.

YouTube detects the encoder’s incoming resolution and frame rate by default, then transcodes live streams into multiple formats for viewers. That means a 1080p option in the player alone does not prove the incoming stream was limited to 1080p. Check YouTube’s received-stream information as well as the viewer’s quality menu. YouTube’s live encoder settings and OBS Project’s explanation of transcoding describe this distinction.

Check OBS’s video output
In OBS, open Settings → Video. Compare Base (Canvas) Resolution with Output (Scaled) Resolution, and check the configured frame rate. If the output resolution is 1920×1080, YouTube cannot receive 4K from that output even if the canvas is 3840×2160. Menu labels may vary by OBS version.

Verify what YouTube received
Open the active broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the incoming stream resolution, frame rate, and stream health. If you use a stream key with manual stream-resolution settings, check that its selected mode is not limiting the intended input. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains its default detection and stream-key options: Live encoder settings.
-
Confirm the active encoder and codec
Check the encoder selected for the active OBS stream—not just a saved profile—and make sure its output matches your intended resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS setup supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; it recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than 4 seconds. Use the bitrate guidance for the codec actually being sent.

Check the bitrate and connection headroom
For 4K/2160p at 60 fps, YouTube’s current live-ingestion guidance recommends 35 Mbps for H.264; for AV1 or H.265 it lists a 10–40 Mbps range. These are live-streaming recommendations, not video-upload recommendations. Test with representative motion and audio, confirm that your sustained outbound upload capacity has headroom above the stream bitrate, and monitor stream health. A weak or unstable connection can disrupt delivery; changing to Ethernet does not change OBS’s output-scaling setting. See YouTube’s encoder settings and YouTube’s streaming tips.

Compare incoming resolution with viewer playback
If Live Control Room reports a 4K incoming stream, but a viewer sees only 1080p, distinguish YouTube’s ingest from its available playback formats. YouTube transcodes live video into multiple output formats, and which options are available can differ from the incoming source. Check the player’s quality options and the broadcast’s received-stream information rather than using the player’s current selection as the only test.

Choose between 4K60 and a lower output
Do not keep 4K60 solely because OBS’s canvas can display it. Choose an output your encoder and connection can sustain reliably, using the codec-specific live bitrate guidance. For a decision, weigh:
- Resolution and frame rate: 4K60 carries more detail and motion information than a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate output, but needs greater encoding and delivery capacity.
- Codec and bitrate: compare the recommendation for the codec actually sent, not a bitrate figure for a different codec.
- Upload stability: leave headroom above the stream’s bitrate and use stream-health readings to identify connection trouble.
- Encoder capability: confirm that the selected encoder can produce the target output without instability.
- Latency needs: YouTube says 4K/2160 streams do not offer its low-latency improvement option and use normal latency.
These checks identify whether the limit is OBS output scaling, the encoder or stream-key configuration, the connection, or simply the viewer’s playback selection. The right diagnosis depends on your actual settings and Live Control Room readings.

Common symptoms and fixes
| What you see | Likely explanation to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS canvas or preview says 4K, but YouTube reports 1080p incoming | OBS output is scaled to 1080p, or the active encoder is configured for 1080p. | Compare canvas and output resolution in Settings → Video; then verify the active encoder’s output settings. |
| YouTube reports a lower incoming mode than expected | A manual stream-key resolution mode may be limiting the input, or the encoder is sending a lower resolution. | Inspect the stream key’s selected resolution mode and the active encoder configuration. |
| OBS is set to 4K60, but the stream is unstable | The bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the encoder may not sustain the selected output. | Check stream health, test with representative content, leave upload headroom, and lower the output if necessary. |
| YouTube reports 4K incoming, but the player offers or selects 1080p | The player’s playback format is not the same thing as the incoming stream; YouTube transcodes live video. | Check all available quality options and the incoming resolution in Live Control Room. |
When new hardware is—and is not—the answer
A hardware purchase is not the default fix for this symptom. First verify OBS’s scaled output, the active encoder, YouTube’s stream-key mode, incoming resolution, stream health, and available upload capacity. A capture card may be relevant if you are bringing in an external HDMI source; network equipment may be relevant if a separate diagnosis shows that the connection is unreliable. Neither addresses an OBS output set to 1080p.
