To fix a screen that keeps dimming, first note when it happens, then check the brightness control for that display: Windows settings for a built-in PC screen, the monitor’s own controls for an external display, or Display settings on a Galaxy phone. Automatic lighting, content-adaptive brightness, power saving, presence sensing, and HDR can each change what you see, so the timing is a useful clue—not proof of a single cause.
When does the screen dim?
Watch for what changes just before the screen gets darker. Does it follow a change in room lighting, a switch to battery power, a move from a bright scene to a dark one, or a change to a particular app? Does it happen when you look away, or only on an external monitor? These patterns help you choose which control to check first; none alone confirms a fault or a specific cause.

- After room-light changes: check automatic brightness based on ambient lighting.
- Between bright and dark scenes: check content-adaptive brightness.
- When switching to battery or power saving: review power-related brightness behavior.
- When looking away: check for presence-sensing or attention-aware dimming, if available.
- Only in HDR content or certain apps: check Windows HDR/SDR brightness balance.
- Only on an external monitor: start with the monitor’s own controls.
Microsoft and Samsung describe these as distinct behaviors, and the controls available depend on the device and software version. Microsoft’s Windows brightness and color guidance covers several Windows adjustments; Samsung’s Galaxy guidance covers automatic brightness and power saving.
Adjust a built-in Windows display
Raise brightness and check automatic adjustment
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Under Brightness, raise the slider and see whether the screen remains at the level you choose.
- If your PC offers automatic brightness based on lighting, review that control and test whether changing it affects the symptom.
Not every Windows PC has the same brightness controls. If the slider or automatic setting is missing, the device may not expose that control in Windows; use any available hardware controls or consult the manufacturer’s guidance for that model.

Check brightness that changes with screen content
Some Windows 11 PCs offer Change brightness based on content. Microsoft says this feature can adjust both brightness and contrast as displayed content changes. If the screen darkens between scenes, look for this setting under Settings > System > Display. If available, choose Off to stop the content-based adjustment or On Battery Only if you want it limited to battery use. Turning it off can reduce battery life, and not every PC provides the setting. Microsoft describes the feature and its availability here.
Check dimming when you look away
If dimming follows your attention rather than the lighting or content, check for presence-sensing or attention-aware dimming controls where your PC provides them. Microsoft documents adaptive dimming for Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, but support and settings depend on the device. Microsoft Learn explains adaptive dimming for Windows devices.

Fix dim-looking HDR content or apps
If the problem affects HDR content, SDR content on an HDR display, or only one app, inspect Windows HDR and SDR brightness balance rather than assuming HDR should always be on or off. Available settings depend on the display and app. Microsoft notes that some SDR apps may not respond to the brightness-balance setting. If an affected app does not change after you adjust the setting, close and restart that app, then check its appearance again. Microsoft’s Windows HDR settings guide explains the relevant controls.

Adjust an external monitor
Use the external monitor’s physical buttons or on-screen display to raise its brightness. The Windows brightness slider for a built-in display may not be available for an external monitor. If dimness is limited to HDR content or SDR apps while using an HDR monitor, check both Windows HDR/SDR brightness balance and the monitor’s own on-screen settings. Microsoft’s Windows display guidance distinguishes built-in display controls from external-monitor controls.

Stop a Galaxy phone screen from dimming
- Open Settings > Display and check Adaptive brightness.
- Adjust the brightness bar manually as a test. If the screen still changes, automatic brightness may not be the only factor.
- Check whether Power saving is on. Samsung says some Power saving modes dim the screen to conserve battery.
- If the screen turns off unexpectedly rather than merely getting darker, make sure a case or screen protector is not covering the proximity sensor.
Menu names and options vary by Galaxy model and region. Samsung Canada’s instructions for Galaxy brightness dimming describe these checks, and Samsung US provides broader display troubleshooting.

If a Galaxy display has visible damage from a strong external impact, Samsung advises stopping use of the device and having it inspected at a service center. For other devices, the guidance cited here does not establish one repair route for every model. If the symptom persists after checking relevant settings, contact the device manufacturer or an authorized technician with the model information and a description of when dimming occurs.
