It is different from Drop In, which can connect immediately like an intercom rather than ring as a conventional call does.
What Echo voice calling means
Alexa Calling is the voice-call feature within the broader Alexa Communication service, which also includes messaging. A supported Echo device or the Alexa app can be used to reach another Alexa Communication user. The recipient is alerted and can answer; calls can also be started by selecting a contact in the Alexa app. Amazon describes these communication endpoints as supported Echo devices, other Alexa-enabled devices, and the Alexa app (What Is Alexa Calling and Messaging?; Amazon Developer: How to Talk About Devices with Alexa).

Who and what you can call
Alexa contacts
You can ask a supported Echo to call an Alexa contact—for example, “Alexa, call Mom”—or select a contact in the Alexa app. The person you call needs to be reachable through Alexa Communication. Amazon’s instructions describe the calling flow and contact setup (Make Alexa Calls with Your Voice).
Some ordinary phone numbers
As of Amazon’s FAQ accessed in 2026, supported Echo devices and the Alexa app can place outbound calls to up to 100 phone numbers in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. This is a service limit, not a promise that every number or Echo model is supported. Emergency numbers, including 911, premium-rate numbers, three-digit or abbreviated codes, and international numbers outside those four countries are among the exclusions described in Amazon’s FAQ and calling instructions (Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs; Make Alexa Calls with Your Voice). Alexa calling is not a way to contact emergency services.

Echo calls and Drop In are different
A regular Alexa call alerts the recipient, who chooses whether to answer. Drop In is an optional, intercom-like feature that can connect immediately to a supported Alexa-enabled device. Household Drop In can connect devices associated with the same Amazon household; Drop In with contacts requires permission. For a permitted incoming Drop In, the audio or video connection starts automatically after its indicators appear. Amazon explains this behavior in How Does Drop In Work with Alexa?.
| Feature | How it starts | Typical destination | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alexa Calling | The call rings or alerts; the recipient answers. | An Alexa Communication contact, or an eligible phone number where supported. | Ordinary call flow through Alexa Communication. |
| Drop In | Connects automatically after permission and indicators. | A supported device in the household or an approved contact’s device. | Intercom-like connection, not a ringing call. |
| Conventional phone service | Uses the phone service’s normal call flow. | Phone numbers according to the carrier and plan. | Alexa Communication is not a replacement for traditional two-way telephone or mobile service. |
Privacy and encryption depend on the call path
Amazon says calls and Drop Ins between Alexa-enabled devices or the Alexa app are end-to-end encrypted by default. If Enhanced Features are enabled—for example, for group Drop In—Amazon says the call is temporarily decrypted, processed, and re-encrypted in the cloud; Amazon also says it does not store the audio or information about call content. When a call reaches a landline or mobile phone, the portion carried over the regular telephone network is not encrypted. These are Amazon’s stated protections and qualifications (Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs).

What to check before relying on it
- Device: Confirm that the specific Echo model supports the calling feature you want. Support can vary by device; the Echo family should not be treated as uniformly compatible.
- Region and number: Phone-number calling availability and excluded number types depend on Amazon’s supported countries and current service rules.
- Purpose: Use Alexa Communication for everyday contact, not as a substitute for conventional phone service or emergency calling. Amazon’s terms make that distinction explicit (Alexa Terms of Use).
- Drop In permissions: Review who is permitted to Drop In, since an allowed connection does not follow the same answer-first flow as a regular call.
