A recorded coaching video can freeze because the source file, encoder, upload to YouTube, or a viewer’s device is interrupting playback. First find out which layer is affected: check the local recording and encoder preview, read YouTube’s stream-health messages, and ask whether multiple viewers on separate connections see the same freeze. That diagnosis is more useful than changing settings or buying equipment at random.
First, identify where the picture freezes
“Frozen” can mean a stuck source or archive, a frozen encoder preview, a problem reaching YouTube, or playback trouble on one viewer’s device. Use the checks below in order to narrow down the fault.

Diagnose the freeze step by step

Check the source and local archive
Play the recorded coaching video locally and inspect the archive if your workflow creates one during the stream. YouTube recommends checking local archive integrity and confirming that an archive’s file size continues to grow while it is being written. If the source or archive has the same frozen frame, look upstream of YouTube playback.

Compare the encoder preview with what viewers see
Watch the encoder’s preview and check its CPU load and error messages. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the source quality routed into the encoder. If the preview freezes, focus on the source, capture path, or encoder. If the preview is healthy but multiple viewers see the same freeze, investigate YouTube ingestion and upload instead. Read stream health in Live Control Room
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and review stream health and any specific error messages. YouTube exposes live-stream metrics and health information there. Its documented diagnostic categories include insufficient video arriving for smooth streaming, an unsupported codec, and keyframe-frequency problems that can cause buffering. Correct the reported issue rather than guessing at a setting. See YouTube’s live-stream metrics help and Google’s LiveStream health-status definitions.

Check outbound upload capacity and stability
Run a speed test from the streaming connection and compare available upload capacity with the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube says the total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth as room. Count the primary and backup stream bitrates when both are being sent. This is a planning recommendation, not a guarantee against every interruption. Refer to YouTube’s streaming tips.

Test whether the problem follows one viewer
Ask another viewer on a different connection to check the stream. If only one person sees the freeze, have them try another network and device, restart or update their browser, app, or device, and lower playback quality if their connection cannot sustain the selected resolution. Network congestion can disrupt live playback even when a connection otherwise appears usable. YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guidance is a useful viewer-side checklist.

Settings that can affect playback smoothness
Latency
Latency is the time from capture to display. Lower latency leaves less read-ahead buffer, so playback interruptions can become more likely. For a prerecorded coaching stream with no need for real-time audience interaction, higher or default latency may be a reasonable stability-oriented choice; check the current Live Control Room setting before changing it. YouTube explicitly cautions that “Lower latency may mean more playback buffering.” See Manage live stream settings and Understand live streaming latency.

DVR
DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream. Its presence alone does not show that DVR caused a frozen picture.
Encoder and output settings
YouTube transcodes live streams into formats suited to different devices and network conditions, but that does not rule out a fault in the source, encoder, ingest, connection, or player. Use YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance alongside the specific health message you see. YouTube also recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the actual stream, then monitoring stream health while live.
