You can automate recurring screenshots with a browser script such as Playwright and an approved scheduler: open the page, wait for a reliable page-specific signal, capture it, and save the file with a timestamp. For pages that require login, first check the portal’s current terms and your organization’s rules; the reviewed official policies do not expressly settle whether unattended authenticated screenshot automation is permitted.
Before automating a GST or tax portal
Decide which page you need to record and why. If a publicly accessible page meets the need, prefer it over a page that requires signing in. For an authenticated page, review the current portal terms and applicable organizational policy before setting up unattended access. The Income Tax Department’s Website Policies prohibit misuse and put responsibility for credential security on users, but do not specifically resolve recurring screenshot automation. CBIC’s GST portal terms caution that website information is not a statement of law and recommend professional advice where there is ambiguity; they do not specify a screenshot schedule or specifically decide whether automated authenticated access is allowed.

Capture a page with Playwright
The example below uses Node.js and Playwright. It opens a page and saves a full-page PNG with a timestamp in its filename. Replace the example URL with a page you are authorized to access. The script deliberately does not automate login: handle authentication only through a method your organization and the portal permit.

TARGET_URLto the intended URL and executenode capture.mjs. For example, in a POSIX shell:TARGET_URL='https://example.com/' node capture.mjs. The capture is written in the current directory.
Playwright’s Page API documents navigation and screenshot options. A normal screenshot captures the viewport; fullPage: true captures the full scrollable page. You can also capture one element by calling its locator’s screenshot method, which is useful when the relevant record is a specific panel rather than the entire page. Wait for a meaningful state
domcontentloaded indicates that the initial document has been parsed, not that every dynamically loaded value is ready. For a portal page, wait for a stable, page-specific element or other safe completion signal before capture. A fixed sleep can be useful for a known animation or delayed widget, but it is not proof that the page finished loading. Avoid interpreting transient loading screens or incomplete data as a successful record.

Make filenames and capture settings repeatable
Use a date-and-time filename so successive runs do not overwrite one another. For comparisons, keep the browser version, operating system, viewport, device scale factor, and other capture settings stable. Playwright notes that visual output may vary across environments; its visual comparisons guidance explains baseline snapshots and comparisons.
Schedule the script in an approved environment
Use an operating-system scheduler or hosted job scheduler already approved for your environment. Set the cadence according to the business purpose and organizational policy; the reviewed portal sources do not establish a required or permitted interval. Confirm that the scheduler runs the same script, browser installation, environment variables, and output path each time. Test a manual run before enabling recurring execution, then inspect the first scheduled output and logs.

Do not put passwords, session material, or full screenshots in public build logs. Restrict access to the automation environment and captured files, use secret storage approved by your organization for any permitted credentials, and apply the organization’s retention policy. The Income Tax Department’s policy states that users are responsible for maintaining the secrecy and security of login credentials.
Compare recurring captures without masking real changes
If your goal is change detection rather than archiving alone, use a visual snapshot comparison against an established baseline. Keep capture conditions consistent, and review baseline updates instead of automatically accepting every changed image; an unreviewed baseline refresh can make a meaningful portal change appear normal. Playwright’s visual comparison documentation describes snapshot assertions and notes that rendering can differ between environments.

Common problems and fixes
- The screenshot shows a loading state or missing content: navigation completion alone may be insufficient for a dynamic page. Wait for a page-specific element or safe completion signal, then confirm the output visually.
- The capture changes between runs without an obvious page change: check whether the browser, operating system, viewport, device scale factor, fonts, or capture settings changed. Keep the environment consistent before treating pixel differences as portal changes.
- The scheduled job cannot find Playwright or Chromium: install the browser in the same environment and under the same account that runs the scheduled task; verify the task’s working directory and executable paths.
- A run times out or produces no file: check network access, the target URL, timeout settings, write permissions, and scheduler logs. Do not log secrets or sensitive page contents while diagnosing it.
- The page requires login or triggers a security check: stop and verify that the intended automated access is allowed under current terms and organizational policy. Do not attempt to bypass a CAPTCHA or access control.
- Files are overwritten or difficult to identify: use a timestamped filename and a dedicated, access-controlled output directory; define a retention policy rather than allowing files to accumulate indefinitely.

Does Playwright compare screenshots as well as save them?
