Fire TV connects to your home Wi-Fi during setup, and Amazon documents Wi-Fi Direct as a feature available to apps on Fire devices. That makes Wi-Fi Direct one possible explanation if you see a separate network name beginning with “DIRECT-” nearby—but Amazon’s published material does not confirm that every such network comes from a Fire TV or identify what causes a particular broadcast.
What a separate Fire TV Wi-Fi network may mean
Fire TV needs a connection to your household network for setup. Amazon’s setup guide covers Fire TV Sticks, Fire TV Cube, Fire TV smart TVs, and other products in the Fire TV family. Amazon’s Fire TV setup guide explains connecting the device to Wi-Fi.

Amazon’s developer documentation lists android.hardware.wifi.direct as a feature for apps that use Wi-Fi Direct networking on Fire devices. Wi-Fi Direct allows devices to connect to one another without using a router. This makes it a plausible explanation for a separate device-to-device signal, but it does not establish that Wi-Fi Direct is responsible for any particular network name you see. Amazon’s Fire TV device specifications list the platform feature.

Amazon-hosted documentation for a different television describes Wi-Fi Direct as a way to send stored content directly to a TV without a router; it also describes displaying an SSID and password for connecting other devices. That is general background on Wi-Fi Direct, not proof of how a Fire TV works. The television manual describes that separate product’s implementation.

What the network name does—and does not—tell you
A separate wireless network name by itself does not show that your Fire TV is sharing your internet connection as a hotspot, interfering with your home router, or compromised. The Amazon materials cited here do not establish any of those conclusions. Nor do they identify the source of every nearby network with a “DIRECT-” name.
If you are unsure which device is broadcasting a network, do not assume it is the Fire TV solely because the name appeared while you were setting up or using the device. The available documentation supports Wi-Fi Direct as a possible capability, not a device-specific diagnosis.

How to troubleshoot a Fire TV that cannot connect to home Wi-Fi
Amazon’s published steps address connection to your router. They are useful for ordinary connection problems, but Amazon does not document them as a way to disable a separate wireless broadcast.

- Restart the Fire TV and toggle Wi-Fi. If the connection still fails, forget the home network and reconnect by selecting it and entering its password.
- Restart your modem and router, and move the Fire TV closer to the router if possible.
- During initial setup, refresh the available-network list with the Back button. If the network still does not appear, restart the Fire TV and router and bring them closer together.

When to consider a different connection or improve coverage
Some Fire TV devices can connect to a router through Ethernet; some require an Ethernet adapter. A wired connection may suit a device with an unreliable Wi-Fi connection, but Amazon’s documentation does not say it disables a separate wireless broadcast. For setup involving physical access to an HDMI port, Amazon also describes an optional HDMI extender in its Fire TV Stick setup instructions; it is not a Wi-Fi solution.
For weak coverage in a larger home, Amazon suggests mesh networking. Compatible Fire TV devices can connect to 6 GHz Wi-Fi 6E networks, and Amazon recommends using the same SSID across supported 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands so Fire TV can select a band based on signal strength. These are home-network coverage and compatibility recommendations, not explanations for a “DIRECT-” network or ways to eliminate one.
