You can defragment etcd while the cluster remains available, but the member being rebuilt temporarily stops serving reads and writes. To minimize disruption, defragment one member at a time, confirm the remaining healthy members can maintain quorum, and check cluster health before moving to the next member. This is staged maintenance, not zero impact on the target.
What defragmentation does—and what it does not do
etcd stores key history in its backend database. Compaction removes historical revisions before a chosen revision, making that logical space reusable inside the backend. Defragmentation rebuilds the backend so its internally free space can be returned to the filesystem. Deleting keys or compacting history alone does not necessarily reduce the database file’s on-disk size. The etcd v3.7 maintenance guide distinguishes these operations.

Defragmentation is issued to an individual member; it is not a replicated, cluster-wide request. Each member must be handled separately. During an online defragmentation, the addressed live member blocks reads and writes while its backend is rebuilt. Other members may continue serving the cluster if they are healthy and retain quorum. The etcd guide recommends per-member execution to help avoid cluster-wide latency spikes.

The gap between the values indicates internal free space that defragmentation may reclaim. Confirm the metric names and their availability for your deployed etcd version. A large database with little difference between these values is not mostly defragmentation-reclaimable: live data is consuming the space.
Choose online or offline defragmentation
| Method | Member state | Availability during work | Release guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
Online: etcdctl defrag |
Member stays running. | The target member blocks reads and writes during the rebuild; other healthy members may sustain cluster service if quorum remains. | The standard online method, subject to guidance for the exact release. |
Offline: etcdutl defrag --data-dir <path-to-etcd-data-dir> |
Stop the member being serviced, then run the tool against its data directory. | The stopped member is unavailable; verify the rest of the cluster can maintain quorum and capacity. | The project’s January 2023 troubleshooting article, last modified September 18, 2024, advises offline defragmentation for etcd v3.5.0 through v3.5.5 because of an online defragmentation crash inconsistency issue. Check current release-specific guidance rather than applying this historical caveat to all versions. |
Neither method has a universal runtime or reclaimed-space percentage established by the cited guidance. Plan based on your deployment and maintenance requirements; do not assume the target remains responsive during online work.

How to defragment etcd without downtime
Use “without downtime” to mean that the cluster continues serving through its other healthy members—not that every member stays available. The safe sequence depends on topology, version, endpoint configuration, and the remaining members’ health.

- Establish the deployment state. Confirm the exact etcd version, cluster topology, endpoints, and current health and quorum. Identify how you will authenticate and connect to each endpoint.
- Inspect endpoint sizes. Compare total database size with size in use for each member. Proceed where the reclaimable gap justifies the work.
- Compact first if historical revisions are the target. Choose a revision appropriate to your application’s retention needs. Once compacted, older revisions are inaccessible; compaction is a data-retention decision, not simply a disk cleanup command. Issue compaction once for the cluster, not once per member.
- Defragment one member. For an online operation, use
etcdctl defragagainst the intended endpoint, with the connection and authentication options required by your installation. Expect that member to block reads and writes while rebuilding. - Verify before continuing. Check cluster health, quorum, and that the serviced member has recovered before defragmenting another member. Do not proceed if the remaining cluster is unhealthy or cannot sustain quorum.
- Use offline work when your release guidance requires it. Stop only the member being serviced, run
etcdutl defrag --data-dir <path-to-etcd-data-dir>, restart it, and verify that it has rejoined and is healthy before touching another member.
These steps describe the documented operational approach, not a runbook tested against every deployment. Validate exact commands, TLS and authentication flags, endpoint discovery, orchestration behavior, and maintenance-window requirements against your installed version and environment.

Recover from an etcd NOSPACE alarm
Exceeding the backend space quota triggers a cluster-wide alarm and restricts operations, including writes. Defragmentation alone will not solve the problem if live data still fills the backend. First identify and address unnecessary data; then compact history and defragment each endpoint as appropriate. The etcd maintenance guide describes recovery as a sequence:
- Remove data that is no longer needed, where appropriate.
- Compact obsolete revision history.
- Defragment each member individually.
- Disarm the
NOSPACEalarm. - Verify that writes are accepted again.
Compaction is issued once; defragmentation is per member. Follow the guide’s command syntax and adapt endpoint and security options to your deployment. Do not treat a cleared alarm as proof of recovery until a write succeeds.

Why cluster health matters between members
Defragmentation takes one member out of service for reads and writes while it rebuilds. If another member is already unhealthy, or removing the target leaves too few members for quorum, staging the operation does not protect availability. Confirm the cluster is healthy before each member and recheck it after each operation. The etcd guide’s per-member recommendation is intended to help avoid cluster-wide latency spikes; it is not a guarantee that every workload will see no interruption.
