When a Fire Tablet keeps dropping its Wi-Fi connection, the cause usually sits in one of three places: the signal between the tablet and the router, the home network as a whole, or the tablet’s power-saving behavior while it sits idle. Amazon’s official Fire Tablet Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance begins with basic checks and restarts, and a smartphone hotspot test is the fastest way to find out which side of the connection to work on.
Start with the basic checks
Before changing any settings, confirm the simple things that cause a large share of connection problems:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Airplane mode is off on the tablet.
- The tablet is joined to the correct network, and the Wi-Fi password is the one your router currently uses.
- Other devices in the home can connect to the same network. If phones, laptops, or smart devices are also offline, the problem is more likely a broader network or internet service issue than the tablet itself.
- The tablet is close enough to the router that the signal is not marginal. Move it nearer and see whether the drops stop.
Test the tablet on a smartphone hotspot
This is the most useful split in the diagnosis. Turn on the hotspot on a phone, connect the Fire Tablet to it, and watch whether the connection holds for a while. Amazon’s guidance puts it directly: “If this works, the issue is with your network, not your tablet.” The result tells you where to focus, as summarized below.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Hotspot result | Other devices on home Wi-Fi | What it points to | Next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tablet stays connected | Also drop or are unstable | Home network or internet service | Restart the modem and router, then check with your internet provider if other devices keep failing |
| Tablet stays connected | Work normally | Something specific to the home network’s interaction with this tablet, such as signal strength or interference | Work through the interference, band, and idle-behavior checks below |
| Tablet still drops | Work normally | A tablet-side issue is more plausible | Reset network settings and check for software updates; factory reset is the last resort |
| Tablet still drops | Also drop | Likely a problem shared by both networks or a general connectivity issue on the device | Check the tablet’s Wi-Fi settings and run the network reset before anything else |
The hotspot test narrows the direction of diagnosis. It does not prove which component of your home network is at fault, and Amazon’s guidance only expressly confirms the first row’s conclusion. The tablet-side reading in the third row is an inference from the same test.

Restart the tablet, then the modem and router
If the basic checks pass, restart in this order:
- Restart the Fire Tablet using its power button.
- Power off the modem and the router.
- Power on the modem first and wait until it has fully connected to the internet.
- Power on the router after the modem has connected, then wait for it to finish starting up.
- Reconnect the tablet and watch it for at least one idle period, since some drops only appear after the screen has been off for a while.
Restarting the modem before the router follows Amazon’s general home-network instructions, which recommend bringing the modem up first and the router only after the modem has reached the internet.
Reduce interference and check the band and mesh setup
Wi-Fi quality can fall sharply when radio sources sit near the tablet or the router. Amazon’s guidance names microwaves, baby monitors, and other wireless devices as sources to move away from. Also:

- Stay connected with family and friends - ask Alexa to make video calls to friends and family or download apps like Zoom.
- Temporarily disconnect other devices that are streaming or downloading heavily, to see whether the tablet stabilizes when bandwidth is freed up.
- If your router broadcasts 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, or you use extenders or a mesh system, Amazon states that roaming requires all of them to share the same network name, security type, and password. A mismatch in any of these can make the tablet bounce between networks. Verify this on your router before assuming it is the cause.
Check Smart Suspend if drops happen when the tablet is idle
If the connection holds during use and drops after the tablet has been left alone, look at Smart Suspend. Amazon identifies it as a power-saving feature that can disconnect the tablet from the network when it is not in use. Open the tablet’s Settings, locate Smart Suspend, and check whether it is on and whether a schedule is set. Turning it off or adjusting the schedule is the direct test: if the drops stop, the feature was the trigger. If they continue with Smart Suspend off, the power-saving explanation no longer fits and you should return to the network checks above.
Reset network settings and check for software updates
If the earlier steps do not resolve the drops, reset the network settings from the Settings menu, which clears saved Wi-Fi networks and their passwords, so you will need to reconnect afterward. Then check whether a newer Fire OS version is available and install it. Retest the tablet on your home network after each change so you know which step made a difference.

Factory reset as a last resort
A factory reset erases the tablet’s apps, downloads, and personal data, so treat it as the final step after the network reset and update check. Amazon’s guidance lists it only for cases where the issue persists. Before you do it, back up anything you need. The support material does not give model-specific backup instructions, so check the backup options on your tablet’s own settings screens first.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the router may be the problem
A Wi-Fi router becomes a reasonable next question only after the hotspot test has pointed to your home network and the restart, interference, band, and idle-behavior steps have not fixed the drops. Amazon’s guidance does not say that routers usually need replacing, so treat that as a conclusion you reach from your own test results rather than a standard fix.

What the official guidance does not establish
Amazon’s support pages describe steps and possible causes but do not report how often each cause occurs, and they do not guarantee that any one step will fix the problem. Nothing in the official material shows that a tablet hardware repair is warranted. The support pages are also undated, and the names of settings and menus can differ by Fire Tablet model and Fire OS version, so match the labels on your screen to the steps above rather than following them word for word.
