If a monitoring script uses that sentinel to suppress later messages, a continuing failure can become invisible. That is a change in meaning, not simply a quieter logging rate.
What does a “log once” sentinel actually tell you?
In Ilya Mozerov’s 2026 report, the Bash tool checked whether an “offline” sentinel file existed. If it did not, the script printed a “phone unreachable” diagnostic and then created the file. On later runs, the file suppressed the diagnostic.

The sentinel answers a historical question: Has this condition been announced? A live sensor reader needs an answer to a different question: Is the condition true now? If the phone remains unreachable, suppressing the next status does not make the phone reachable; it only removes evidence of the current state.

Mozerov described this as changing “the tense of the sentence.” The reported incident is an operational account from the author, not an independently audited study. He said the sensor tool returned no output on every invocation over 36 days. The number of times a person or agent ran it and received silence could not be established: the failure left no reader-side record.

Why was the first warning invisible to the consumer?
The script wrote the diagnostic to stderr, but the caller used ctx="$(mesh-body-context)", which captures stdout. In this specific setup, a warning on stderr was not part of the value the consumer read. On subsequent runs, the sentinel prevented the warning from appearing at all. Mozerov reports that a repeated failing run produced zero bytes on both stdout and stderr.
The important rule is to match the status channel to the consumer’s contract. If the caller captures stdout as the result, a status that matters to that caller must be represented there, or the caller must deliberately read and handle stderr as well. Sending every diagnostic to one particular stream is not a universal fix; leaving the consumer with no explicit unavailable state is.
The revised tool described in the report emits an unavailable message on stdout on every run, identifying the phone as unreachable and the body context as unread—not calm or still. That distinction prevents a missing measurement from being mistaken for a healthy reading.

How should a monitoring script represent unavailable data?
An empty captured value is ambiguous. It can mean a command crashed, timed out, could not be found, was skipped, or had no access to a sensor. It does not, by itself, mean the monitored condition is normal.
Define explicit outcomes for the consumer instead of making it infer status from silence. For a sensor-reading script, that could mean:
- A measurement: provide the reading and identify its source.
- A named fallback: provide the fallback value and make clear that the primary reading was unavailable.
- A named refusal or unavailable status: say that no reading was obtained, so the consumer does not treat absence as a reassuring result.
Mozerov summarizes the point: “Silence is not one of them.” The exact representation depends on the calling code, but it should be explicit and consumable through the expected interface.

How can you test for a once-only logging bug?
A test that invokes the script only once cannot distinguish “announce once” from “announce every time”: on the first run, both produce the same output. Mozerov notes that “a test that exercises this path once passes on the broken code” for precisely that reason.
For stateful behavior, assert what happens across consecutive invocations, not only at the beginning:
- Run the script with a stubbed sensor command that returns the unavailable status.
- Assert that stdout contains a useful, explicit unavailable message.
- Run the same script again without resetting the sentinel.
- Assert that the second run still communicates the current unavailable state.
Using a stub lets the test exercise the failure behavior without depending on a physical phone or a live sensor. It also makes the expected status repeatable.

Why does the order of runtime checks matter?
A sentinel guard is not automatically broken in every script. Its effect depends on the path the script takes and on whether earlier control flow removes the sentinel. In Mozerov’s sweep of related scripts, a recovery rm removed the sentinel before a later SSH-read failure gate on one path. The affected tool did not remove it on its failure path, so the later run stayed suppressed.
Trace the actual runtime path for each relevant failure, rather than judging the guard in isolation. Check which gate fails, whether recovery code runs first, and whether the sentinel still exists when the script decides whether to emit status.

When is rate limiting the right choice?
Print-once behavior and rate limiting solve different problems. A persistent sentinel can suppress all later notices after the first event. A time-based limit, by contrast, can reduce repeated warnings while still allowing a reminder after an interval. An Apache HBase Jira issue about BucketAllocator warnings explicitly frames the choice as printing once and then never again versus printing at a more reasonable interval, such as once per minute. That is a separate example of the distinction, not evidence about Mozerov’s Bash incident.
For a condition that consumers need to know is still true, use a current status or a deliberate interval-based reminder—not a historical “already announced” marker in place of the status. A one-time event notice can still be useful when the event itself is what matters; it should not be mistaken for ongoing health reporting.
