What “free to download” means
NVIDIA’s license says its software “is not sold” but licensed for use under the applicable terms. In practical terms, there is no separate driver purchase for an ordinary graphics-driver download; downloading it does not make the graphics card or computer free, and it does not make every NVIDIA software product free of licensing requirements. Choose the product that matches your NVIDIA graphics hardware and select your operating system. NVIDIA’s license makes users responsible for checking that the software is suitable for their graphics controller, operating system, and computer.

Select a driver type that suits your workload, if both options are available. NVIDIA positions Game Ready drivers for gaming and Studio drivers for creative applications; those descriptions are guidance, not a guarantee that one type is best for every user.

Which download route should you use?
Windows and other supported systems
Use NVIDIA’s driver selector to match the package to your product and operating system. Avoid choosing by driver name alone: compatibility with the specific hardware and system matters.

Linux
Check your distribution’s guidance as well as NVIDIA’s driver page. NVIDIA notes that many Linux distributions provide NVIDIA graphics-driver packages through their native package managers, which may integrate better with the distribution’s framework.
NVIDIA App
NVIDIA describes the NVIDIA App as a way to get automatic driver updates. Some driver downloads also offer the app as an installation option. It is companion software with separate license terms, not a prerequisite for downloading a driver.

When a license may be required
Enterprise virtual-GPU software is a separate case from an ordinary GeForce graphics-driver download. NVIDIA says enterprise customers need a current vGPU software license to access its virtual-GPU download portal. That condition should not be read as meaning all consumer GeForce drivers require a paid subscription.
