4 Windows 11 Settings You May Want to Turn Off on a Fresh Install

On a fresh Windows 11 install, four settings are worth reviewing: personalized offers, tips and welcome prompts, the Widgets taskbar button, and apps that launch automatically. Turning them off is optional—not a universal cleanup checklist. Each has a tradeoff, and “outdated” is a matter of opinion: Microsoft still documents these features.

The steps below apply to Windows 11. Labels can vary by release or build, so use Settings search if a path does not match your screen.

Which settings are worth reviewing?

Setting Why turn it off? What you give up Where to find it
Personalized offers and recommendations Reduce Windows-personalized tips, ads, and suggestions. Some offers and recommendations may be less relevant; turning these controls off does not stop all data collection or all advertising. Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers
Tips and welcome prompts Reduce prompts after updates or sign-in. Windows tips and welcome information; disabling all notifications could also hide useful alerts. Settings > System > Notifications
Widgets taskbar button Remove the taskbar entry point for the Widgets board. Quick access to its news, weather, calendar, to-do information, photos, and other content. Settings > Personalization > Taskbar
Unneeded startup apps Keep apps you do not need from opening at sign-in; startup apps can affect startup speed and performance. Apps that provide useful sync, security, accessibility, hardware, or communication functions may no longer be ready at sign-in. Settings > Apps > Startup, or Task Manager > Startup apps

1. Stop personalized offers you do not want

Windows 11 groups these controls under Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers. Review the options there and turn off the ones that do not suit you. The page covers personalized offers, app-launch tracking that can personalize Start and search, suggested content in Settings, and access by websites to your device’s language list.

Microsoft says personalized offers may draw on information about the device and its use, including Windows diagnostic data, account information, and data collected from other Microsoft products and services. Choose the controls that match your privacy preferences; do not assume switching them off disables every ad or all data collection.

2. Reduce tips and welcome prompts without losing useful alerts

Open Settings > System > Notifications to review notifications, tips, and the welcome experience shown after updates or sign-in. Turn off the prompts you find unnecessary, then adjust notifications app by app rather than silencing everything.

If you want fewer interruptions at certain times, Do Not Disturb quiets banners while leaving notifications available in Notification Center. Disabling every notification can mean missing messages, reminders, and other alerts you wanted to keep.

3. Hide the Widgets button if you do not use the board

In Windows 11, go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and hide the Widgets item. This removes its taskbar entry point, not the board itself: Windows key + W or a swipe can still open it. The board may show personalized news, weather, calendar or to-do information, and photos; its widgets and dashboards can depend on different apps or services. You can also adjust dashboard notifications.

Windows 10 uses a different feature name

On Windows 10, the related taskbar feature is called News and interests. Microsoft documents turning it off from the taskbar context menu; it is not the same setting path as Windows 11 Widgets. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, and Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. See Microsoft’s News and interests guidance and its Windows 10 support notice.

4. Disable only startup apps you do not need

In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager and select Startup apps. Task Manager shows each app’s startup impact, which can help you decide what to review.

Disable apps you do not need at sign-in, not every app on the list. Security, sync, accessibility, hardware, and communication utilities may serve a useful purpose before you open them manually. Startup apps can affect startup speed and overall performance, but the result depends on the app, workload, and device. Microsoft notes that slow performance can have multiple causes and older hardware can limit improvement. Do not expect a fixed boot-time gain from changing this setting.

Leave protective settings alone unless you have a specific reason

These optional convenience and personalization changes are different from turning off safeguards. Microsoft describes Defender SmartScreen as a Windows and Edge feature that checks information about visited websites and downloaded files to help warn against unsafe web content or malicious software. Disabling it is not a general-purpose way to declutter Windows; see Microsoft’s explanation of Windows privacy settings.

Likewise, app recommendation settings offer choices such as warning about non-Store apps or limiting installation to the Microsoft Store. The right choice depends on the software you need; blocking every non-Store installation is not a blanket optimization. Microsoft explains the options in its app recommendation settings guide.

Make changes selectively

Start with the settings tied to a real annoyance: unwanted personalization, prompts, a taskbar item you never use, or apps you do not need at sign-in. Keep the controls you rely on, and revisit the choice if a notification, widget, or startup utility turns out to be useful. For other slow-PC symptoms, use Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance rather than assuming these four settings are the cause.
