Why Does Chrome DevTools Screenshot Crop the Bottom of a Web Page?

A cropped screenshot often means DevTools captured only the viewport. Switch to full-size capture, or check captureBeyondViewport for protocol-based screenshots.

Usually, the screenshot mode is the first thing to check: Capture screenshot captures the visible viewport, while Capture a full size screenshot includes content outside it. If you are capturing through the DevTools Protocol, check captureBeyondViewport; its documented default is false. Those differences explain many apparent crops, but a cropped bottom alone does not identify one universal cause.

Choose the capture scope you need

Capture mode What it captures When to use it
Capture screenshot The content currently visible in the viewport. When you want an image of the current screen.
Capture a full size screenshot The whole page, including content not currently visible in the viewport. When you need the full document rather than just the visible screen.
Node screenshot The inspected element, rather than the whole page. When you want a specific element. Chrome 89 release notes say node screenshots were updated to include content below the fold; this is a historical release note, not a guarantee about every page or current capture issue.

Chrome documents the viewport and full-size choices in its Device Mode guide. The distinction matters: a viewport capture can look like a crop when you expected the entire document, but that does not mean the full-size command itself is broken.

Capture the whole page in DevTools

  1. Open Chrome DevTools and enable Device Mode.
  2. Open the Device Mode More options menu.
  3. Select Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome describes this option as capturing the whole page, including content not currently visible in the viewport.
  4. Check the resulting image at the bottom of the document. If the image still omits content, note the exact command and Chrome version before investigating further.

If you used a command palette or an element-specific command instead, verify that it was a full-page capture. A node screenshot targets an inspected element; it is a different operation from capturing the whole page.

If you capture through the DevTools Protocol

For automated captures using Page.captureScreenshot, inspect the request parameters and set captureBeyondViewport when the capture must include off-viewport content. The protocol documentation lists its default as false, so do not assume that an unspecified setting requests content beyond the viewport.

See the Chrome DevTools Protocol documentation for Page.captureScreenshot for the parameter details. This is a protocol-level setting; the visible Device Mode menu and an automation client’s API may expose capture scope differently.

Why the bottom may still be missing

If the full-size command or an explicitly configured protocol capture still omits the bottom, the symptom alone is not enough to identify the cause. The page layout or rendering behavior, whether the target is an element or the whole page, and the Chrome version may all matter. The available official documentation describes the capture modes and parameter behavior, but does not establish one universal current bug behind all bottom-crop reports.

For a useful diagnosis, record:

  • The Chrome version.
  • The exact DevTools command or protocol method used.
  • Whether the target was the whole page or a specific element.
  • The page URL or a minimal reproduction, if you can share one.
  • Where the screenshot stops and what content is missing.

Chrome 89’s release notes describe improvements to node screenshots and full-page screenshots, including content below the fold. That history confirms these are distinct capture behaviors, but it does not establish that a current crop on a particular page has the same cause. See What’s New In DevTools (Chrome 89).

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot without configuring a browser capture, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; the service accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page capture and other capture controls.
